RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Title: FACEBOOK AS A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR ON A STUDENTS FEELING OF

SELF INVOLVEMENT

Proponents: Geomel Adriel S. Chua – Lead Researcher

College: College of Arts and Sciences, B.S. Psychology

Background of the Study:

In this generation people depend their life on Social Media, Gadgets, Internet, and many
more tech stuffs, many would say that “the generation now is definitely different from previous
generations”, a good statement with also a very good explanation, some people also objects on
the fact that social media or gadgets is ruining the child’s way of socializing and communicating
in the outside world, in the past children usually go outside and play with their playmates, also
they tend to communicate better and be able to be active and be healthier, some of the
problems concerning our generations today are social involvement, people would question the
youth how they will be able to be involved with the society and the environment through social
media, of gadgets?

In the past we have lots of games that children plays outside their home, but nowadays,
children tends to stay inside their houses and just scroll their phones, or tablets, the real
question in this is “does this affect the child’s social involvement?”, “will this affect the child’s
attitude as for them growing up?”.

The researchers/proponents of this study tends to explain how social media affects our
life as Filipinos and also how are we able to let ourselves be involved with our social issues and
to our society. Existing studies also shows that social media “when used correctly” would be
able to help ourselves to be connected with other people and be involved in our society, also
Facebook is also a great platform in advertisements, news, announcements, school related files
(ppts, word) and will be able to help a person be involved even without the need of going out of
their homes.

Statement of Research Problem:

How does Facebook affects students self-involvement to the society?

Statement of Specific Objectives:

1. What is the level of Facebook usage among college students of SBU?

2. What is the level of self-involvement among college students of SBU?

3. Is Facebook a significant factor in student's self-involvement?

Review of related Literature:

People with lower self-esteem don’t feel good about presenting themselves originally on the social
networking website Facebook. Facebook is a rich site for research, enabling different forms of user
involvement, but also considerable information exposure. Previous evidence in the social media
literature indicates that Facebook is indeed a double-edged sword where engagement with the platform
can positively or negatively influence users’ subjective well-being. Where other research has
documented that when Facebook users adopt a comparative mindset, involvement with Facebook
lowers subjective well-being via feelings of envy.

Theoretical Framework

It can be seen that society today has moved through a faster phase in life, where in
everything can be accessed instantly and with ease. Connecting with others and getting in
touched became so much different compared to the old ways; you can now interact with others
without even being physically present in the situation through the use of social media. The use of
social media platforms to connect and absorb disseminated information has been beneficial to
our society although many people who use social media platforms specifically ‘Facebook’ took
advantage of its accessibility to spread false information, this may result in confusion which will
deceive students that are exposed to these fallacies.

The influence of Facebook on students has been very apparent, a study made by Sulaiman, Ainin
in 2018 titled “Influence of personality traits on Facebook engagement and their effects on
socialization behavior and satisfaction with university life” showed the correlation between
Facebook engagement and users personality trait. The study analyzed the impact of Facebook
engagement on a students’ socialization behavior and their satisfaction with their university life.

Even though social media has been a big help in interacting with people around the globe, one
may infer that it has led society to avoid physical social interaction even affecting those people
who are nearby in ways of having to use social media to reach them instead of physically seeing
them personally.

The social media platform ‘Facebook’ has formed communities that offers a wide selection of
interests, people formed this communities on Facebook based on mutual passion on specific
activities or topics. The purpose of these specific groups is to help individuals connect with
others with the same interest as them; this serves as a positive feeling of self-involvement.

Operational Framework

The whole research will be guided by the operational framework presented below:

Perceptions and
statements about
Facebook Effective
Factors of
Thematic Facebook approach to
Facebook on
students’ in the daily promote
feeling of self-
Analysis life of
Connectedness productivity
involvement students and positivity
to the society

Null Hypothesis:

The researcher suspects that the use of the Social Media site “Facebook” is correlated to depression and
loneliness. Assuming people on Facebook stays happy and remained unchanged, the average time of
people use Facebook is 20 minutes per day, gives the users the right amount of time to be alone. The
researcher wants to test whether depression and loneliness can be a factor to the use of Facebook.
Now, the null hypothesis is what you expect if this hypothesis does not happen. In this case, if
depression doesn’t appear at a given specific time, then it must occur at a time equal to or less than the
average a person use Facebook.
