Reflection of EDT 180

To be completely honest, I didn’t really think I would learn very much in this class because I

grew up constantly using and learning about computers. All throughout elementary school, my

school librarian taught us computers basics and when I got to middle school I took a plethora of

advanced computer classes that taught me the ins and outs of computers, the programs available

and how to stay safe online. Additionally, both of my parents are very tech-savvy and were

constantly teaching my siblings and myself about computers, so that always gave me a huge

advantage over my classmates. However, I was greatly surprised when Mr. Lewallen began to

teach us little short-cuts and other special skills that made using programs like Excel and Word a

lot simpler. So I was wrong, I’m finishing this class with a deeper knowledge of computers,

computer history, the programs available and how to use them- all of which will be immensely

beneficial for me in the future.

I’d like to say I know how to use the Microsoft programs fairly well. Excel was one program that

I was sure I knew how to use. I knew how to input numbers, I knew how to make charts and

graphs, I knew how to edit those graphs and I knew how to use the different formulas. I didn’t

think there was much more to learn but one of the first days Mr. Lewallen was teaching us about

Excel, he told us he was going to let us in on a secret that would make using Excel much simpler.

He proceeded to write January in one of the cells, put his cursor over the bottom right corner of

that cell and then he dragged it across the next couple of cells. To my amazement those cells

filled with the following months- February, March, April, May, etc. He explained that was the

fill series handle and that what he just did could also be done with numbers, quarters, dates and

more. I had no idea something like that existed, but after I learning about it I proceeded to use it

in every situation applicable. I learned other small tips and tricks in Excel and other Microsoft

programs as well, and I now realize the importance of these programs. I believe Excel is

especially important regardless of whatever career I may go into, and because I took this class,

I’m walking away with a deep knowledge of this program and the other Microsoft programs that

I know will always benefit me.

Coding was something that I had absolutely no idea how to do. The idea of coding itself scared

me- it seemed extremely difficult and I always felt like it was something that I wouldn’t be able

to ever figure out. However, my parents always encouraged me to get into coding because it’s an

important skill to have and because coding and the need for coders is increasing. When I found

out that we were going to learn how to code I was excited and it was actually the topic I was

most looking forward too. I really enjoyed this module and had a lot of fun learning the basics of

coding and I realized that it is something that I am capable of doing with practice and more

learning. I’ve also realized how important of a skill coding is to have, especially in an era where

technology is becoming increasingly relevant taking over virtually every aspect of our lives. I

definitely think this module benefitted me the most and it is something that I see myself doing

for years to come.

All in all, despite my previous knowledge of computers, I still ended up learning a lot in this

class and am walking away with a deeper understanding of everything relating to computers. I

think that learning about technology, how to use it and how to stay safe while using it is so

important especially nowadays because it’s becoming increasingly prevalent in our lives. I’m

glad that I took this class and I know I’m walking away with knowledge and skills that will

benefit me in the future.
