INTRODUCTION

Hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse effect or properties

or someone’s health under certain conditions at work. Risk is the chance or probability

that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a

hazard. Hazard and risk have its own identity which are closely related to each one

another. Hazard is the possible danger that could occur when some factors would

trigger such event while risk is the possible harm which result if given danger becomes

active. In simple understanding hazard is a possible cause while risk is a possible

negative effect.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is

another federal agency that studies about working conditions and reports on potential

hazards and possible risks. The law requires that a workplace having risk and hazard

must eliminate them, especially in an automotive workshop in senior high school. This

research deals with risks and hazards in an automotive workshop to automotive senior

high school students in Minapan High School. Here’s the example of risk and hazard in

an automotive shop like; struck or hit by an heavy object it may cause scratch ,wound,

amputations, or worst death. Another example hazardous chemicals it will cause burn,

irritations, poisoning, and worst death. There are so much more hazards in automotive

shop that we don’t know or realize that will cause risk in our lives like electric shock ,

strip and slip, fire, theft, and garage keeper risk. My classmate Renel Patches

experienced or encounter hazards and risk. He experienced electric shock cause by the
unsafe wire terminal of the welding machine, he quickly jolt, suffered electric shock and

suddenly feel fatigue.

To avoid hazards and risks in an automotive shop always follow the safety first

rule. And also wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like rubber gloves, rubberized

apron, safety goggles, steel toe shoes, and etc. Always follow the rules and regulation

of the automotive shop. Be aware of the hazard signs and read carefully the instruction

manual before the activity inside of the automotive shop . And if there is an accident

happen, if you know how to manage a patient try to use available first aid kits. And

immediately call a medical respondents in nearest hospital or emergency respondents

hot line like 991. These research will help you to know what is hazards and risk you may

encounter inside the automotive shop. What is the effect of hazards and risks to an

individual especially senior high school automotive students in Minapan High School.

Safety is very important in the automotive shop knowing and following all your safety

rules can help you to prevent injury and damage. There are many different little sections

of safety in the shop for example, gasoline, fire, hazardous materials. It’s recommended

for the people to first know the rules and later apply them as they go on. There are also

laws involved regarding hazardous waste disposal methods. The Occupational Safety

and Health Act was passed down by the United States government in 1970. This teach

the citizens of the United States about safety and good working conditions, and also

providing them with information. (www. bartleby,. com /essays /Automotive-Shop-

In 2010, more than 170,000 people worked in an auto body and glass repair industry

according to US Bureau of Labor Statistics. These workers are exposed to a variety of

hazards each day, from contact with hazardous chemicals to the possibility of

amputating limbs on digits with mechanical equipment. Supervisors should encourage

workers to follow established safety procedures and insures that all employees receive

appropriate safety training. (Chron – Leigh Ann Morgan)

Automotive shop workers are especially vulnerable to chemicals and other workplace

hazards, which US Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety Act established

workplace standard for auto mechanics and the shop they work in. Regulations cover

everything and continually updated as well to keep up with exchanges in the industry.

failure to comply can result in a variety of penalties, from fines to permanent closure of

an auto shop business. (Chron- What are the OSHA Regulations for Auto Mechanics

and Auto Shop : Linda Ray)
