Scene Investigation will know that there are a
lot of ways to identify criminals and their
victims. What are these, and how reliable are
they as a way of checking identify?
1 DNA
This carries the genetic information, which
we inherit from our parents, and is only the
same in identical twins. It’s highly reliable,
but takes time to analyze, so it’s usually only
used in criminal investigations.
2 FINGERPRINTS
Investigators have used these for
identification for over 100 years. They’re
partly genetic and partly formed by
movements that we make before we are
born, so they are completely unique. They’re
easy to collect and analyze, and they are a
reliable way of checking identity.
This method is not very reliable because our
faces don’t have enough unique features.
CCTV cameras in London regularly film
people who have committed a crime, but the
technology they use hasn’t identified any
criminals.
4 EYES
The color and texture of our irises are unique,
and iris scan is a quick and reliable way to
identify people. For this reason, it’s used in
places where security is a priority. A lot of
airports now use iris-scanning systems.
5 HAND GEOMETRY
The shape of the hands is less unique than a
fingerprint, but in low-security contexts like
sports centers, hand geometry readers are a
convenient way to check identity when
combined with a password, card or visual
identification.
