Introduction

Telecommunications service was introduced in Ethiopia by Emperor Menelik II in 1894 when

the construction of the telephone line from Harar to the capital city, Addis Ababa, was
commenced. Then the interurban network continued to expand satisfactorily in all other
directions from the capital. Many important centers in the Empire were interconnected by lines,
thus facilitating long distance communication with the assistants or operators at intermediate
stations frequently acting as verbal human repeaters between the distant calling parties.

Ethio telecom, previously known as the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation (ETC), is an

integrated telecommunications services provider in Ethiopia, providing internet and telephone
services. Ethio telecom is owned by the Ethiopian government and maintains a monopoly over
all telecommunication services in Ethiopia.

Ethio telecom has its own website and android system that enables it to perform its
multidirectional task and communicate with its customers. Their website is addressed as
www.ethiotelecom.et and their popular android application is named as Yimulu, which enable its
user to recharge prepaid amount, request for their current balance, buy internet, voice and SMS
packages for both oneself or gift to someone other during the day or night with having advantage
over the local often service provided by the service provider.

In addition to those services their android application used to send a “call me back” request when
the customer is having insufficient balance to make a phone call. Their website is also a system
which provide its customers information they need about the telecom service and products and
help customers to find update information whenever they need it to have.

Generally, we are here to illustrate about the ethio telecom internal working website which in
turn lead us to talk about the functionality that the internal working website is intended to
provide for its users and finally the strength and weakness of their system.

Functionalities of the system

When we talk about one system’s functionality we are talking about statements of services the
system should provide, how the system should react to particular inputs, and how the system
should behave in particular situations. It specifies the software functionality that the developers
must build into the product to enable users to accomplish their tasks.

There is no general way to describe the functionality of website due to its versatility in providing
multifunctional service for the system users. Below are some list of functionality of the system
under use:

 Enable users (company’s worker) to access the system by their private username and
password.
 The system allows the company’s worker to intake and store the credential information of
their customer in company’s customer database.
 The system enable the company’s worker to issue for SIM card number.
 The system allows company’s worker to modify the SIM Card owner credential
information based on the oral/verbal agreement made between customers.
 Enable company’s worker to process fixed line phone payment system.
 Enable company’s worker to activate and deactivate customer service due to different
reason.
 The system allows the company’s worker to control the data usage of different companies
in contract.

Strength and weakness of the system

1. Strength of the System

The system has many strength which held it until today on working environment. Here are some
of its strength:

  Reliability: the system is trustworthy to be used consistently by the worker without
failure.

 Security: the system is able secure its users information with the application of both
party effort to secure information and due to the application of different security
mechanisms and reliable programming language.
 Documentation: the System has well defined document which helps to easily maintain
the system and has brief and precise expression on how to use the system.

 Recoverability: the system is able to recover from unexpected interruptions, including:

power failures, product failures, lost data of the system.

 Capacity: the system is able hold large database size, throughput, number of users etc.

 Compatibility: the currently functioning system is compatible of the system/application

built with various other objects such as other web browsers, hardware platforms.
Example: Compatibility with 4G Network.

2. Weakness of the System

 Usability: the system is not easy to use for worker without any specific training.
 Performance: somehow the system need a much effort to perform its function due to its
strict security parameter.

Recommendation

Above we have discussed about the weakness of current system on how to provide its service for
its customers. Here we want to recommend the ethio-telecom to make small modification on
their website to make it simple to use by the company’s worker without any specific training.

In addition to this, the system has to be simple enough to execute specific command of system
user to perform individual activity without the need of much effort and improvement of
performance appraisal.

Conclusion

The Ethiopian government has decided to transform the telecommunication infrastructure and
services to world class standard, considering them as a key lever in the development of Ethiopia.
Thus, ethio telecom is born from this ambition to bring about a paradigm shift in the
development of the telecom sector to support the steady growth of our country.

Reliability, security, documentation, recoverability, capacity and compatibility are some of the
strength of the system under function. Somehow the system has some weakness which should be
reviewed and corrected. For example, performance and usability are the problem that should be
considered by the company.

Generally, the assignment helped us a lot in finding out the functionality of ethio telecom
working system and understand both the weakness and strength of the company’s to some extent.
