HOMEWORK 4

(Due to 17 May, 2018)

Develop MATLAB functions and determine how the exit velocity changes as a function
of the pipe length (L) between the range 0.025 m < L < 6 m for the tank and pipe system
given in the Figure 1. Assume the tank is very large and the water is being drained
through commercial steel pipe (Ɛ = 4.6x10-5 m). Plot the graphs showing the relation of
the exit velocity versus length of the pipe, Reynolds number and friction factor.

Kinematic viscosity of water: 1.1 x 10-6 m2/s

h = 1.5 m
D= 0.041 m

I used total mechanical energy equation, the assumptions that I made;

• Turbulent flow assumed,

• So α = 1,

• V1av=0, since the tank is large enough,

• Z2=0, Z1=(h+L) is assumed,

• P1=P2=Patm,

• Ws=0, since there exist no shaft work,

• Total F equals to friction loss due to friction factor,

• Assumed velocity is found by mechnical energy equation,

• Sudden contraction is 0.55*v^2/2, since A1>>A2,
