U.S. Employment Trends Report | October 2010 Simply Hired, Inc.

Executive Summary
• National growth slows near year-end. Nationwide job openings increased 4.4% from
September, about half the 7.7% increase between August and September. “Hiring decreases
significantly in most industries just before the holidays,” explained Gautam Godhwani, CEO
of SimplyHired.com. “That decrease is being offset by increased seasonal hiring in retail and
related industries, resulting in what appears to be limited overall job growth.”

• Finance and accounting job opportunities. Job openings in the financial services industry
increased 11.6% in October, while job openings for finance and accounting specialists
increased 42.6%; the difference in growth indicates that there is demand for such
professionals both in financial firms and, more significantly, in organizations outside the
finance industry. This steady overall hiring is evidence that the financial industry is making
substantial progress toward recovery.

• Steady hiring for engineers. Job opportunities for engineers remain strong, with openings
for computer engineers growing 11.8%, and for all other engineers 12.3% month-over-month.

• Unemployment ratio equalizes in five metros. Job competition improved in Milwaukee,

Oklahoma City, Minneapolis & St. Paul, Denver and the San Francisco Bay Area. The
unemployment ratio dropped to 1:1 unemployed persons to job openings in all five metros,
joining Washington, DC, West Palm Beach, Boston and Baltimore as some of the least
competitive metro areas.

Employment Impact: Non-Retail Seasonal Hiring

• Increased travel and transportation hiring. Seasonal hiring continued to boost not only
retail (10.4% industry growth and 80.2% occupational growth), but related industries
like travel (13.3%) and transportation (12.7%) as well. Both travel and transportation—
which includes both passenger and cargo transportation—see increased business during
November and December.

• UPS increases hiring 133.5%. Ranking 12th of the nation’s top hiring companies, the
United Parcel Service more than doubled hiring in October, going from 524 to 1,222 job
openings. These openings are primarily part-time jobs for package handlers and drivers,
to accommodate the increased number of packages sent during the holiday season.

Local Market Outlook
HIGHLIGHTS
• Slight job market improvement. A nationwide increase in job openings resulted in reduced job
competition in most major metros. Despite maintaining its rank as most competitive metro, Miami
& Fort Lauderdale, for example, went from a 6:1 to 5:1 unemployment ratio. This improvement can
be attributed to seasonal hiring, as retail and transportation companies prepare for the holidays.

• Short-term decline in Texas. Job openings in Texas decreased over the month from September,
with both San Antonio and Houston posting job losses (-9.4% and -2.3%), and the Dallas & Fort
Worth area posting a very minimal month-over-month growth (0.5%).

About the U.S. Employment Trends Report

The U.S. Employment Trends Report is a monthly summary and analysis of employment
trends in the United States. These findings are based on monthly job seeker activity
on SimplyHired.com, which aggregates millions of listings from over 30,000 employ-
ment sites, and data obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some findings may be
projected from recent historical data. Data may not be representative of all industries,
occupations and/or metro areas. “Metropolitan Areas” in this report are the 50 most
populous in the U.S., as ranked by the Nielsen Company’s Designated Market Area (DMA)
list. “Occupation Categories” are derived from the Department of Labor’s O*NET database.
