U.S. Employment Trends Report
October 2010
Contents
Executive Summary
Key highlights from this month’s report p. 1
About
Information on the Report and Simply Hired p. 14
• Finance and accounting job opportunities. Job openings in the financial services industry
increased 11.6% in October, while job openings for finance and accounting specialists
increased 42.6%; the difference in growth indicates that there is demand for such
professionals both in financial firms and, more significantly, in organizations outside the
finance industry. This steady overall hiring is evidence that the financial industry is making
substantial progress toward recovery.
• Steady hiring for engineers. Job opportunities for engineers remain strong, with openings
for computer engineers growing 11.8%, and for all other engineers 12.3% month-over-month.
• Increased travel and transportation hiring. Seasonal hiring continued to boost not only
retail (10.4% industry growth and 80.2% occupational growth), but related industries
like travel (13.3%) and transportation (12.7%) as well. Both travel and transportation—
which includes both passenger and cargo transportation—see increased business during
November and December.
• UPS increases hiring 133.5%. Ranking 12th of the nation’s top hiring companies, the
United Parcel Service more than doubled hiring in October, going from 524 to 1,222 job
openings. These openings are primarily part-time jobs for package handlers and drivers,
to accommodate the increased number of packages sent during the holiday season.
