Assignment 1.

Stress in 3-D

Answer all.

1. The state of stress in 3-D at a given point relative to the xyz coordinate system
is:

x= 50 y= 30 z= -20

xy = 15 yz = 10 xz= -10 MPa

The x’ –axis is equally inclined with the x,y, z axes while the y’ axis is perpendicular
to x’ and intercept the z-axis.(see figure below).

Determine
(i) The direction cosines for the x’ and y’ axes relative to the x, y, z coordinate
system
(ii) The normal stress in the y’ direction and the shearing stress on the x’y’ plane.

y x

2. The stresses acting at a point in a body is given as xx = 4 MPa, xy = 3 MPa,
xz = 2 MPa, yy is unknown, yz = 4MPa, zz = 0, If one of the principal stress
is zero, Determine (a) the value of yy, (b) the direction cosines of a plane on
which there is no stress.(c) the other principal stresses and (d) the maximum
shearing stress.

3. The principal stresses at a certain point in a body are as follows:

1 = 60 + 2d, 2= 60 MPa, 3 = 30 MPa.

At a certain plane whose normal makes an angle at 60 o wrt 1- axis and 45o
wrt 3-axis, the normal stress is 55 MPa. Using Mohr’s circle method,
determine the value of d and the shearing stress on the given plane.
Compare your answer using the analytical approach.
