CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Research


Language is a complex system of communication that used human beings. By
language we can talk with other people, can give information, can able to exchange
knowledge, can express emotion, ideas, beliefs, feelings, opinions, wishes, thanks,
and promises.
. Eva and Helen (2011:6) stated that language is primary communication
system for human beings, but it is not the only way to communicate, so language can
be distinguished from communication in general. Many forms of communication are
not linguistic; these include non-verbal, mathematical, and aesthetic communication
through music or the visual arts. Vyvyan (2014:1) stated that language is central to
our lives, the cultural tool that arguably sets us apart from other species. Central in
our life is communication with other people, to socialiszation with society, and
culture. Therefore, the researcher concludes that language is a device of
communication.
To communicate, there are many kinds of languages in the entire world, such
as Indonesia, South Korea, Mandarin, Javanese, English etc. From many languages
which are used by the people, one of them is English. Crystal (2003:1) stated that
English is the global language. The global era is develop in the world, many country
used English as a tool of communication and it makes people who come from
different countries to be easier in making interaction and communication. It is
indicate to the world that English is important to learn including in Indonesia.
In Indonesia, English is a foreign language which the students must be
mastered of the global language. To master it, the government conclude that English
become part of curriculum of the school be taught to the student. The students should
master the four skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Writing is a tool of communication in written form. Tillema (2012:1) stated
that writing is one of the most important skills for educational success, but also one of
the most complex skill to be mastered. Become mastered in writing skill, the writer
must also be able to translate of the text, because translation as important
communication to get information.
In Indonesia, many text written in English that use by Restaurant, Hospital,
Hotel and some of places for that Indonesian people need to translate of the text to
known and get information or instruction.
According to Catford (1965:1), translation is an operation performed on
languages: a process of substituting a text in one language for a text in another, it
means that when we translate a text to another language, we just change the language
of the text it self to the language we want to without changing meaning of the SL. As
we know translation is a process transfer of meaning from source language (SL) into
target language (TL).
According to explanation above, based on when i teaching practice in SMP
Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar, in the process of translating,i found that the students have
many difficulties to translate some texts in their books. Some of the difficulties faced
by students are the students difficult to understood the way to translate, the students
difficult to understood the meaning of the text, and the students difficult to translate
new vocabulary. Cause the students difficulties in translating English into Indonesia
is the students don’t have enough vocabulary. So, the students should be able to
translate each sentence or each paragraph of the text. Between the kinds of the text to
analyze it, the researcher will use narative text.
Mislaini (2015:3) stated that narrative text is the text that tells something
imaginative or something that is just a fantasy and the goal is only to entertain the
reader. In various sources narrative text can be found in the form: fables (Stories
about animals behave like humans pictured), fairy stories (The story is fantastic, full
of wonders), mysteries, science fiction, romance, horror stories, legends, historical
narratives, personal experience (personal experiences written), ballads (ballads, which
can be a touching story readers, usually in the form of a love story that is not up).
Based on the statement above, the researcher choose types of narrative text
legend. Siti (2017:16) stated that legend is a narrative text of human actions that are
perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history. The example
of legend in narrative text such as Sangkuriang, Malin Kundang, Romeo and Juliet,
and The Legend of Tangkuban Perahu.
In this occasion, the researcher would like to analyze the students’ difficulties
in translating of the text, especially in translating narrative text from English into
Indonesia entitled, “Students’ Difficulties in Translating Narrative Text from English
into Indonesia at Grade VIII of SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar’.

B. Identification of the Problem


Based on my experience when teaching practice, that writer found some
problems when teaching translation of the text, such as:
1.Students were less vocabulary
2. Students didn’t understood meaning of the text
3.Students are unable to arranged sentence to be standard language
4.Students didn’t known meaning of words

C. Scope of the Research


There are 13 types of genre they are Spoof, Recount, Narrartive, Anecdote,
Procedure, Hortatory exposition, Description, News, Report, Analytical exposition,
Explanation, Discussion, News. The writer does not analyze all the genre, but the
researcher only focus one kind of genre namely is narrative text of legend.
D. Problem of the Research
Based on the background above, the researcher presents research question as
follow: “What are the students’ difficulties in translating narrative text from English
into Indonesia of SMP Negeri 9 Pematangsiantar?”

E. Objective of the Research


The objective of the research is to find out the students difficulties in
translating narative text from English into Indonesia of SMP Negeri 9
Pematangsiantar.

F. Significance of the Research


The significance of the research are the main parts in undertaking the
research. It is very important to build understanding between the researcher and the
reader to get the achievement and improvement in translation of English into
Indonesia. This research contributes at least in two main parts. They are Theoritically
and Practically. The results of this research are expected to give some benefits as
follows:
a. Theoritically
The researcher hoped that this study will be very useful for all reader as
general especially for English teachers it can guide English teachers to know
and find out the students difficulties in translating text of English into
Indonesia.
b. Practically
It is also hoped that this research will become a reference for helping next
research to know about students difficulties in translating text of English
into Indonesia.
G. Key Terms
The researcher would like to give explanation about definition of each key
terms in this research, namely:
1. Translation is an operation performed on languages: a process of substituting
a text in one language for a text in another (Catford, 1965)
2. Narrative text is the text that tells something imaginative or something that is
just a fantasy and the goal is only to entertain the reader (Mislaini, 2015)

H. The Theoritical Framework of the Research


The researcher use some theories the support the researcher’s idea such as
Catford (1965), Crystal (2003), Eva and Helen (2011), Mislaini (2015), Siti (2017),
Tillema (2012), Vyvyan (2014).
