Occupational Health and Safety

1. What is the OBJECTIVE of providing Occupational Health and Safety Standards?

The OBJECTIVE of providing Occupational Health and Safety Standards is to eliminate or


reduce occupational safety and health hazards in all workplaces and institute new, and update
existing, programs to ensure safe and healthful working conditions in all places of employment.

2. What are the 4 duties of employers with regards to Occupational Health and Safety
Standards?

a. Establish an OH&S committee/worker health and safety representative/workplace health


and safety designate as required and consult/co-operate with them;
b. Respond in writing to recommendations of the OH&S committee/worker health and safety
representative/workplace health and safety designate and provide them with periodic
written updates on implementation;
c. Make arrangements for and consult with the OH&S committee/worker health and safety
representative/workplace health and safety designate during workplace inspections;
d. Co-operate with anyone exercising a duty imposed under OH&S legislation

3. What are the 3 duties of the workers in relation to Occupational Safety and Health Standards?

a. Protect his/her health & safety and that of co-workers and others at or near the workplace;
and
b. Co-operate with employer, co-workers, OH&S committee/worker health and safety
representative/workplace health and safety designate, and anyone exercising a duty
imposed under OH&S legislation.
c. Follow instructions and training
d. Report hazardous conditions
e. Properly use all safety equipment/devices/clothing

4. What are considered as hazardous workplaces? (give 3)


a. Workplaces with physical hazards such as noise, temperature extremes, radiation, etc.
b. Workplaces with ergonomic hazards such as repetition, lifting, awkward , postures, etc.
c. Workplaces with safety hazards such as slips, trips and falls, faulty equipment, etc.

5. Why is the provision of OSH standards important? Give 4 reasons)


a. To assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by setting and
enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance.
b. To save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of workers.
c. To maintain a reporting and recordkeeping system to keep track of job-related injuries and
illnesses
d. To provide training programs to increase knowledge about occupational safety and health.
