2.1 Dijkstra’s Algorithm

According to (Sniedovich, M.) Djikstra’s Algorithm is one of the most celebrated

algortihms created. It was created by, Edsger W. Dijkstra in 1959. Dijkstra’s Algorithm is

basically an algorithm designed to give the optimal solutions to a large class of shortest

path problems. The algorithm is very efficient in finding the shortest path problems,

since it basically stems from being a heuristic search algorithm. Dijkstra’s algorithm tries

to give the optimal and shortest path by looking at the weighted edges. Weighted edges

can have different values and thus can simulate distance from point A to point B.

Dijkstra’s Job is to find the shortest route from point A to Point B.

This article relates to the study because Dijkstra’s Algortihm takes advantages of

the paths with the least amount of weighted edges. In reality, as much as possible,

garbage collection must be easy and quick, with no hassles at all. This is to find the

shortest path between objects.

2.2 Metro Clark Waste Management

According to the (Negros Daily Bulletin), Gov. Daisy Avance Fuentes gave solid

waste management after realizing that her province generates close to a thousand tons

garbage each day. Her team drew up a map of clustered towns, each cluster to share a

landfill operation. She resolved the a cluster in the provinces that cannot segregate

because there are no recyclers to buy recyclables. Now recyclables are cleaned and stored

while awaiting buyers.

The article again echoes the problems of Bacolod in terms of garbage and

improper waste disposal.

2.3 Philippine Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000

According to Republic Act No. 9003, the Philippine Ecological Solid Waste

Management Act of 2000 provides the legal framework for the country’s systematic,

comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program that shall ensure

protection of public health and the environment. It emphasizes the need to create the

necessary mechanisms and incentives to pursue an effective solid waste management at

the local government levels. It includes mandatory segregation of solid waste to be

conducted primarily at the source such as household, institutional, industrial, commercial

and agricultural sources.

This is relevant to the study because the group aims to take part in promoting

awareness towards proper garbage segregation at the source. The effort of the

government towards waste management is felt in this law but the people must also take

part in this for it to be fully implemented. In the case of the study, the source is

households. The respondents are taught on how to properly segregate for them to apply it.

2.4 Barangay execs to meet on waste segregation

According to Azue, R. (2013), Waste segregation has been set by the barangay

officials and will focus on implementing the waste segregation program. It was

implemented long ago but the current woes of the city on its open dumpsite could have

been avoided. The administration conducted an inquiry on the status of the open dumpsite

of the city and the conflict between the private garbage collection company. The meeting

with the barangay officials on waste segregation has been set. This was announced

by Bacolod City Mayor Monico “Newks” Puentevella, as he revealed that this week’s

meeting will focus on the implementation of the waste segregation program, which is in
compliance to Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

According to Puentevella, he will make sure that “waste segregation from the source”

will be implemented as a way of solving the garbage woes of the city. The mayor stressed

that proper waste segregation was started by former Mayor Luzviminda “Joy” Valdez but

its implementation was disrupted. He vowed to prioritize the waste segregation program

during his term as mayor.

This article is relevant to the study because it shows the effort of the government

towards implementing the waste segregation program in the city. Doing this research

would help in promoting garbage segregation awareness in support to the existing

programs of the government.

2.5 Game-based Learning

According to Trybus (2014), "Learning" doesn't mean rote memorization-it means

acquiring the skills and thought processes needed to respond appropriately under

pressure, in a variety of situations. Good game-based learning applications can draw us

into virtual environments that look and feel familiar and relevant. Within an effective

game-based learning environment, we work toward a goal, choosing actions and

experiencing the consequences of those actions along the way. Research supports the

effectiveness of game-based learning in virtual environments-for example, according to a

meta-analysis of flight simulator training effectiveness, simulators combined with aircraft

training consistently produced training improvements compared to aircraft-only training.

In game-based environments, we learn not only the facts, but also the important,

underlying hows and whys.

This article is relevant to the study because the researchers aim to teach the

respondents about garbage segregation through a game and it is hope that they apply

whatever is learned while playing.
