Abstract

This paper develops my philosophy of assessing learning. I will explain the process of the

assessment, why it is important, and possible outcomes of the process.

Chapter 11 Assignment

Introduction

Being an effective teacher is to be able to teach and motivate students to learn. As a

future teacher, my students are going to be motivated and able to succeed in school and outside

school. I will have them do a lot of hand on experiments, observations and projects that help

them learn and understand scientific concepts

Discussion

As a science teacher, you have a big number of opportunities to come up with in class

activities for your students. When talking about chemistry, many things can be done to introduce

a subject or to help students understand the “real life application” of it. For example, you can

start a lesson about acid/ base reactions by explaining what is meant by the acidity and basicity

of a substance. You can show students some home used materials, such as cleansers, shampoo,

vinegar, etc, things that students have seen or are familiar with in order to have them interested

to learn more about the topic.

Teaching is more effective if content was personalized through real life application. I will

assign my students to go home and write a list of three things they can find anywhere that

contains a specific substance, such as esters or acetic acid. When they come back, they can share

what they have written down with their peers in groups. After that, I’ll have a class discussion

and then begin the lesson as they take notes. That way, I can have them pay attention and be

ready to learn something new.

To determine whether students are on track with the lessons, I’ll use summative

assessment at the end of each unit. A group project or presentation is usually a good method to

determine a student’s proficiency, and I prefer to give them a test after they have completed it.
Chapter 11 Assignment

Working on a project and collaborating with peers will enhance their learning and encourage

them to understand a topic well before presenting it to the class. Therefore, having a test after a

project will only bring better results as they have mastered the material.

Assessing students’ performance is really important to determine strengths and

weaknesses of their learning and indicates the strategies needed to improve. I can conclude that

as I assess students’ learning through projects and activities.

Conclusion

As a prospect science teacher, my class will hopefully be a fun class where students enjoy

attending and walk in with full excitement to learn new things. I’ll have them learn better

through activities and experiments. A lot of real life application of chemistry can be introduced

to enhance their learning and understanding of the material, and the best way to test their

understanding is through projects that they enjoy doing in groups.
