Learning Outcomes:
The child will learn the difference between absorb and not absorbing
The child will use skills of comparing and contrasting
Learning standards:
CD-11h- with guidance and support, use simple tools to investigate objects and
material’s
CD-11m- Describe and predict changes that take place when mixing and
manipulating materials
Materials to collect/prepare:
Water
Towel (to place down and catch water)
Sponge, foil, plastic, paper towel, wash cloth, paper
Transition/warm up/introduction
Adult-guided Procedures:
After the transition/warm up/introduction, the adult will…
1. Define/ask child what absorb means
2. Have child guess which objects will absorb and which will not
3. Explain to child that lighter objects are more likely to stay on the surface of
the water and heavier objects are more likely to sink to the bottom of the
water
4. Have child sort the objects that absorbed and the that’s didn’t. Ask child
why they think that happened.
Child-guided Procedures:
1. First the child will predict which objects will absorb/not absorb
2. Next the picks up dropper fills it with water and puts 3 drops on the object
3. Then the child will notice and talk about whether the absorbed or did not.
4. have the child sort the absorbed objects from the ones that didn’t absorb
5. Finally the child will analyze the activity comparing what they thought
would absorb and what didn’t.
Scaffolding up: Use objects child is not familiar with such as metals, wood
