Factors influencing behind gamers’ preference between AMD and Nvidia

1. Introduction

The battle for supremacy in the graphics card market has been raging since there have been
dedicated graphics cards. First it was NVIDIA and ATI. Now, it’s NVIDIA and AMD. Each
company tries to one up the other in a cycle. It happens with every new release.

Each time, though trends appear, each company beats the other in different parts of the market
and different price points. While these trends are always shifting, they do stay relatively
consistent for some time.

Figuring out what the best graphics card is for your budget is no small task, but unfortunately
that's only the beginning. It doesn't matter whether you're looking at an AMD or Nvidia GPU,
once you've settled on a specific GPU—choosing between an RTX 2060 and GTX 1070, for
example—you'll be presented with a massive selection of varying card models from at least
half a dozen manufacturers. These cards will vary in price, features, clock speed, warranties
and more.

There's no one solution that will work for every individual, as many items come down to
personal preference. Going with the least expensive card for example is a perfectly viable
option... most of the time. Here are the major things you should look for when looking for your
next graphics card. I've sorted them roughly in order of importance, though again personal
preference will play a role.

2. Research Gap

The number of research on peoples’ preference between AMD and Nvidia is close to zero. No
study was found regarding this topic. But this topic poses great significance to the gamers
around the world. This study will be conducted on Bangladesh perspective. That’s why the
respondents will be Bangladeshi gamers. This study will contribute to the gaming industry and
thousands of gamers will be benefited from it.

4. Research Objectives

The primary objective of this paper is to identify the factors that influence Bangladeshi gamers’
preference between AMD and NVidia.

The secondary objective of this paper is

 To provide a brief overview of the gaming industry.

 To provide an overview of both AMD and NVidia
 To identify the significant factors affecting gamers’ preference between AMD and
NVidia.
 To suggest some recommendations to the companies.

5. Literature Review

Pricing

The easiest way to look at the landscape of the graphics card market is to break it down by
budget. Cards compete in different price points, and it doesn’t matter if another card is better
at a much higher price. NVIDIA’s flagship cards run around $1200. AMD’s top cards come in
around $500. That doesn’t mean that you can, in any way, compare the two.

Size and Connectivity

You need to make sure your graphics card will fit in your PC, that it supports your desired
video connector, and that your PSU is sufficient, preferably before the purchase. Or if you're
building a new PC, make sure your case can fit your graphics card and buy a 500W or larger
PSU. Even if a card looks like the best deal ever, if it doesn't fit it's a non-starter

Frugally minded

It's easy to get hung up on all the fancy features and extras that I'll cover below, but for most
people, price is going to be an overriding factor in deciding which card to buy. That's because
most graphics cards with the same GPU perform similarly, within a small range, so your ultra-

2
uberclocked extreme model might only be 10 percent faster than a card with reference clocks.
If it's only a small increase in price, that's fine, but spending $100 or more extra often means
you could have just made the move to the next GPU tier. I'll get into this more in a second, but
clock speeds aren't the only factor. For enthusiasts, if you're willing to tweak and tune your
card, the gap between the fastest and slowest card models for a specific GPU are often only a
few percent.

Clockspeeds, cooling, and noise

Clockspeeds do matter, but often the performance difference between models is only a few
percent. I'd prioritize fan size and cooling over clockspeed, especially if you value silence (and
size isn't a problem).

Warranty and Support

A longer warranty is nice but ideally you never need it. Buying a higher quality model with a
good cooler is usually better than focusing on the warranty.

Lights, camera, aesthetics!

There's the matter of keeping up with appearances. This is the lowest priority for me personally,
but for others it might be a major consideration. Do you want to bling out your rig with RGB
lighting? A boring card simply won't cut it. But if you don't have a case window and are more
of a function over form type of person, what your card looks like is probably the last thing
you're worried about. Aesthetics covers a lot of things, from lighting to colors to style. If you're
building a themed PC, you're probably looking at all three.

Just as there's no perfect PC that will satisfy everyone, there's no single 'best' graphics card
model. Some people love the bling, others find it gaudy. Some want a whisper quite build that
can sit in their living room entertainment system, others plan on wearing headphones and
couldn't care less about a noisy PC—as long as it's fast. And some people want a portable
gaming powerhouse, while others have no interest in mobility.

With so many models to choose between, it can be hard to figure out which one will best fit
your needs, but the good news is that there's a ton of overlap. Nearly every graphics card
manufacturer offers multiple models of every GPU, each catering to a different type of user.

6. Research Hypothesis

The hypotheses developed for this study are:

H1: Pricing influences gamers’ preference between AMD and Nvidia

H2: Size and connectivity influences gamers’ preference between AMD and Nvidia.

H3: Clock speeds, cooling and noise influences gamers’ preference between AMD and NVidia.

H4: Warranty and support influences gamers’ preference between AMD and NVidia.

H5: Lights, camera, aesthetics influence gamers’ preference between AMD and NVidia.

8. Research Methodology

8.1 Research Design

This study will follow descriptive and exploratory research method to review the literature and
explore the factors affecting gamers’ preference between AMD and NVidia. The researcher
will practice quantitative research approach to process and analyze the primary data.

8.2 Information Needs

This study will require both primary and secondary information to identify the significant
factors behind gamers’ preference of graphics between AMD and Nvidia.

8.3 Sources of Data

Data will be collected from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary data will be
collected from gamer reviews, news articles and websites. The primary data will be collected
through interviews and questionnaires from the respondents.

8.4 Measurement and Scaling

The survey will be conducted through using non-comparative scaling techniques. A 5-point
Likert scale will be used to measure the variables where “1” stands for strongly disagreed and
“5” stands for strongly agreed effect on statements (Luthans, 2002)

8.5 Questionnaire Design

This research will be a cross sectional descriptive study. As the respondents will be of different
age, experience and education level the researcher will adopt a structured questionnaire which
will be developed from the findings of the literature.

8.6 Sampling Design

5
The total sample size for this study will be 80 and respondents from different areas of
Bangladesh such as- Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet will be chosen. Convenience sampling
technique will be adopted for selecting the sample for this study.

8.7 Data Analysis Technique

Data derived from demographic variables will be analyzed through descriptive analysis such
as percentage, mean, standard deviation etc. The data regarding gamers’ preference will be
processed and analyzed with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) version 20.0.
Different analytical tools such as factor analysis, regression analysis will be used to analyze
the collected data. Multiple regression analysis will be done to develop the relationship
between the gamers’ preference and the independent variables.

9. Expected Outcome

The author expects that factor such as price, clock speeds, cooling and noise and warranty and
support will be the most significant factors behind gamers’ preference between AMD and
NVidia. Factors such as size, connectivity, lights, cameras and aesthetics are expected to be
less significant in this study. This research will be of a great importance to gamers’ all around
the world. It will help them to know the specifications of both AMD and NVidia and why
people prefers each of them.

10. Significance of this Study

As there was no study before on gamers’ preference between AMD and NVidia. This study
will be a milestone for the gaming industry. The researcher believes that anyone who will be
reading this paper will feel it worthy of their valuable time. It will benefit the gamers largely
in choosing between AMD and NVidia.
