1. The textbook consists of four parts, Introduction, Unit One, Unit Two and Unit Three.
The Introduction consists of Pinyin, relevant Pinyin spelling rules and a Pinyin Chart, basic
components and radicals of Chinese characters, the strokes and stroke-order of Chinese characters, the
comparison between traditional and simplifi ed characters.
Unit One has five lessons, which are mostly focused on the students themselves and their life, such
as introducing oneself, one's family, one's grandparents and university life.
Unit Two also has five lessons, which mostly concern Chinese culture, such as Chinese
surface area, ethnic groups, Chinese characters and family names.
Unit Three has six lessons, regarding Chinese behavioral culture and related cultural psychology,
such as the gastronomic culture, how the Chinese address one another, terms of address used by Chinese
people, and Chinese modesty, etc.
2. Each lesson includes a text, a vocabulary, strokes and stroke-order of Chinese characters (from
Lesson 1 to Lesson 10 ), grammar notes, a reading passage and exercises. This textbook comes
traditional and simplified characters.
3. At the end of the textbook, there is a Chinese-English vocabulary index in alphabetical order.
4. We show the strokes and stroke-order for the new words whose traditional form and simplified
form are the same. The new words whose traditional and simplified forms are different and certain
difficult characters are marked with the serial numbers of writing order.
5. There is a CD attached to the book, including the texts, new words and reading passages.

6. Grammar notes tailored to students'needs
The students with Mandarin background have already acquired certain ability of lisfening and
speaking in everyday conversations. That is to say, they have already learnt basic structures of Chinese
tfammar from their parents. Therefore, we do not explain grammatical points from easy ones to difficult
(rES, as in textbooks designed for students whose native language is not Chinese. Instead, based on our
hng-time teaching experiences, we single out and briefly explain grammatical mistakes that these students
re liable to make as well as the non-standard expressions in their Chinese language. The sequence of
grammatical points is determined by the contents of the texts, that is, the grammatical points which appear
eulier are flrst explained, and those that appear later are later explained. The explanations of grammatical
points are limited to their usage in the respective lessons.
Qian He (UCSD) planned and designed this book, and organized the compilation. She wrote texts,
reading passages and the introduction to phonetics. She also took part in the compilation of grammar and
exercises.
Yenna Wu (UCR) wrote the introduction, vocabulary, grammar notes, stroke-order of Chinese
characters and exercises.
Ying Petersen (UCI) compiled the exercises.

A Chinese syllable is usually made up of three parts, an initial, a final and a tone. For example,
the syllable "hdn" consists of the initial "h", the flnal 'oon" and the fourth tone 'o ' ".
1. lnitials
There are a total of twenty-one initials in Chinese Pinyin.
Labial b D m f
Blade-alveolar d t n
Velar q k h
Coronal q X
Blade-nalatal zh ch sh r
Dental z c S
Of the twenty-one initials, six pairs are distinguished by whether they are aspirated or unaspirated.
Unaspirated
- Aspirated Example
b-o bo-po
d-t de-te
o-k oe- ke
-o ii-oi
z-c ze-ce
zh
-ch zhe-che
Three other pairs are distinguished by whether they are twisting or flat tongue.
Retroflex-Unretroflex Example
zh-z zh
-zt
ch-c ch
-cl
sh
sh
-s -st
2. Finals
There are thirty-six finals in Chinese Pinyin.
U u
o ro UO
o UO

er uer
oo oo
OU OU
on on uon Uon
,f
en tn uen [in
onq ionq uono
eno rno uenq
onq ronq
And there is a special flnal ooer" which is never used together with initials.
Table,of Pinyin
There are over fou, turJr"d ."aningful syllables jn Chinese. Together with the tones. they can
de over twelve hundred syllables. Please refer to the Table of the Pinyin and Phonetic Notation
({co &s insert).
There are four tones in Chinese. The flrst tone shows &s"-", the second ""',the third """ and
t fourth " '". Tones are used to differentiate meanings, which mean that if the tones are different,
t meanings of syllables are different. Such as,
tong lh soup
t6ng fE sugar
tdng qift to lie down
tdng W to scald
Neutr.E:f
Apart from four basic tones, some syllables are pronounced short and weak, often losing the
ciginal tone. These syllables are called neutral tones. No symbol is used to represent neutral tone.
Such as,
momo {9{4 mother M6ng mo? {f[-B? Busy?
Xidxie. iitir{. Thanks. Ni ne? tBW How about you?
Ldi le. *T. It's coming. Hdo bo. *FrE. oK!
Rffiffi*,Fi*$I,:,
There is also a retroflex flnal in some Chinese syllables. In written form, we usually add "r" at
the end of the syllables. Such as,
Iidotionr Wl*.)L chat fdngudnr WB)L restaurant huariE)L flower
When a third tone is followed by another third tone, the first third tone is pronounced as a second
tone. Such as,
Niz6o. {ftF. Gooamorning. Nihdo. ffifl" How areyou? Wo h6n hbo.iktft*!. Iamflne.
When a third tone is before a flrst tone, second tone, fourth tone or other non-third tone, the third
tone is pronounced as a half third tone. Such as,
hdn hei fRR very dark ni l6i 1ttf*- come here w6 hui {kA t can do
3
" - " is pronounced as a flrst tone, but when it is before a fourth tone, it is pronounced as a
second tone. Such as,
yfci -ft once yfhu)r -* )L a little while yizdi -$ time and again
When " a first tone, second tone, or third tone, it is pronounced as a fourth tone.
- ') is before
Such as,
yi ti0n _.* one dsy yi b6i -tT one glass of y)bon .-ffi general
yilidn _.:S\ in succession yizhi -H always yipdng -.-# one side
yiqi -E together yizdo --+ early morning yididnr -,HJL a little
The basic tone of " 7f: " is a fourth tone. If it is before a first tone, second tone or third tone,.it is
still pronounced as a fourth tone. Such as,
bi goo 6Hnot tall bn l6i 4* not come bi hdo 4*T not good
But, " 4 " is pronounced as a second tone when it is before a fourth tone. Such as:
b0'bi 4tr not love bri qir {$ not go bti zdi
not heie

.:: earliest Chinese language writings date back to the Shang Dynasty from around the 16'h
-:- --.. BC to the 11'h century BC. Most of the writings of that time were found on oracle bones-
- .:' shells and cattle's shoulder blades used for divination purposes. Since its invention, the
' -:-3 ririting system has undergone many stages of change and development. What remains
-'--.:.,:ed. however, is that each character is monosyllabic and uninflected. Unlike western scripts,
' -:-3 .-haracters are unique, graphic, and aesthetically appealing.
.: modern Mandarin Chinese many characters are homonyms. While the largest Chinese

Although each character is monosyllabic, characters in modern Chinese usually do not exist
alone as individual characters and syllables, but rather combine with other characters to form
compounds. Most compounds consist of two characters, that iS, two syllables. For example, hfrfi$ (gImo,
aunt) and Ft (zdoshong, morning)-
In writing Chinese characters, you need to pay attention to the fact that all the characters should fit
into squares of the same size. Each individual character should be spaced apart from other characters.
When writing complex characters such as if, , you need to make sure that each component appea$ thinner
than when it exists alone as a character, and both components in this complex character should be very
close to each other so as to form an entity, rather than remaining as separate entities.

All Chinese characters consist of strokes. It is important to learn the basic strokes. The character
(ydng, forever) is oftqn used to demonstrate eight essential types of strokes, though its number of
-;it
strokes is only flve. There are twenty-five different strokes in all. The following are fourteen basic
strokes,
dot: Ex: I
horizontal: Ex: l
vertical: I Ex: f
left-falling: ) Ex: I
right-falling: Ex: t
rising: Ex: *T
vertical+rising: L Ex:E
level right-falling: Ex: B
left-falling+dot: Ex: *T
horizontal hook: Ex: X
slanting hook: t Ex: t
vertical+hook: J Ex: 3U
vertical+turning+hook: L Ex: d
horizontal+turning+hook: 1 Ex: fl[
When you can recognize the basic types of strokes, you will be able to count how many strokes
:here are in each Chinese character. Any given character may be made up of only one single stroke or
rs mon! as sixty-four strokes. Fortunately for learners, most commonly-used characters consist of no
::rore than twenty strokes, and many of them have less than ten strokes.
There is a fairly well-established order for writing the strokes of every character, though there may
re occasional variations in the stroke order of a few characters. In general, if the stroke order is wrong, the
.'haracter will seldom appear normal in shape or well-proportioned. Students are urged to conscientiously
-earn the correct stroke order for each character from the very beginning, and to practise writing new
:haracters repeatedly. If you use the same standard stroke order each time, you will be more likely to
't rite well-proportioned characters and to learn and memorize new characters quickly.
7
Some useful principles for stroke order are as follows,
1. From top to bottom. Ex: i, }
2. From left to right. Ex: 116, wl
3. Middle before sides. Ex: tf, r!
4. Horizontal before vertical strokes. Ex: t, T
5. teft-falling before right-falling. Ex: ;1, t
6. Boxes before strokes that cut through. Ex: H, F
7. From outer strokes to inside ones. Ex: lal, .H
8. Outer strokes before inside ones, and then the sealing stroke. Ex: El, El
9. Enclosed strokes before enclosing strokes on the left and the bottom. Ex: B, B
