This week was a true learning experience because I was forced to work with people that I did

not necessarily feel comfortable working with; but was still in need of completing my task! This

week, I had to deal with several communication issues that were not necessarily coming from me

but it certainly did affect me directly because my mentor ship program was nothing like I

imagined at all. I was not even aware that I was due to present because it was never confirmed

via the site coordinator at the middle school, I received the news from the site coordinator at the

high school. From then I was super antsy and frustrated with the way that the entire process was

handled on someone else’s end. For me it was super embarrassing to have to email my university

supervisor and inform them that my mentor ship program has not been confirmed/ was

confirmed at the very last minute. I also did not want to have to turn away the young ladies away

that actually did show during their lunch time. The girls got into the classroom at about 11:20,

and their lunch was over at 11:35 so there was not much time at all for me to do much of

anything but a introduction of myself and a general introduction of the program itself. After that

I decided to go over to Early College for the sake of scheduling a time for me to implement my

program at Early College and it actually be confirmed. This just showed me that at times there is

no harm in receiving outside help for the betterment of your event or program. Which is why I

confided in Kemyada (former middle school coordinator) and she gave me some great advice on

what to do for the mentor ship program and reminded me that I should do what I can do where I

am allowed to do it. I can’t help those that don’t want me help, no matter how good my

intentions are. The Career Fair at the middle school remained me a lot of my mentor ship

program in the sense that there were a lot of holes in the planning that were never meant to be

there and weren’t there in the beginning. Being that there was a lack in communication, lack of

following up, lack of backup plans, and just overall lack of preparation; I felt it wasn’t as

effective as it was intended to be. Half way through the program I was sent to get donuts and

coffee did all the vendors because there was nothing there to thank them and there were no

“thank you” cards being sent out afterwards.
