Social Studies Standard: Determine the impact of population growth on cities, major road systems, demographics,
natural resources, and the natural environment of Alabama during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Objectives:
• Students will explain the impact of population growth and reasons why cities change.
• Students will determine the impact of population growth, cities, major road systems, demographics, and major
resources.
• Students will create an online presentation using Prezi to showcase their learning as a cooperative group.

Differentiation Strategies (How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the
needs of those with special needs?):

The lesson will include various opportunities for students to collaborate, discuss, use creativity and
movement to express their knowledge of the content.

Special Education: Students with special needs will be paired in a group that will allow them to work
together to complete the collaborative project. Students will be allowed more time, if needed.

EL students will have the Spanish and English translations on the Prezi presentation as well as pictures for
deeper understanding.

ENGAGEMENT:
The teacher will begin by drawing on students’ background knowledge of the technological advancements
discussed in previous lessons. The teacher will remind students about all the technology and industry our
state has been involved in and how it has shaped Alabama today. Using the Prezi presentation, the
teacher will ask students what they think population is. After allowing some discussion, the teacher will
explain the definition of population and its importance.
Assessment: Questioning
EXPLORATION:
The teacher will read “Transportation and Technology” in the book Alabama: The Heart of Dixie written by
John Hamilton. The teacher will ask students to think back to their research on the technology that was
created. The teacher will guide students’ discussion about the technology and how they think it may have
impacted Alabama’s population. The teacher will show students the timeline and facilitate discussion about
key details and dates in the timeline, highlighting the population given by the census at various times in
Alabama’s history. The teacher and students will continue the discussion as they move through the
timeline until recent history (2000s).
Assessment: Discussion, Questioning
EXPLANATION:

The teacher will as students what all of the technology and industry has brought to Alabama. The teacher
will explain that when a location such as Huntsville or Birmingham grew in industry and factories that their
cities also grew. More people came to live in the cities and there were more jobs available. The teacher will
create a T chart listing the advantages and disadvantages of population growth. The students will examine
the timeline again to find years of growth and years of recession in the state’s population.

ELABORATION:

The teacher will use the Prezi presentation to explain the group project. The teacher will have students
create a Prezi presentation to answer questions about Alabama’s population growth from the early
twentieth century through the twenty-first century. The students will work together in groups formed by the
teacher to create the presentation. Every student in the group will be assigned a “Manager” position to
maintain accountability in the group. The jobs will be distributed by the teacher at this time. The teacher will
explain how to create and log in to Prezi using the presentation already created. Once all students have
been assigned their groups, roles, and logged in to the website, the teacher will walk around the groups to
guide students with their research and designs.

Assessment: Formative Observation and Questioning


EVALUATION:

The teacher will evaluate students’ work on the Prezi presentation for participation in the group
assignment, use of research appropriately, and answering the questions on the checklist. The teacher will
evaluate students’ knowledge formatively throughout the lesson using questioning and discussion. The

summative assessment will be the Prezi presentation that showcases all the students’ learning from the
lesson.
