Reflecting Back

The ENC 1102 course aims to further strengthens students understanding of the work that
writing and research do in the world. During this course you are expected to ask questions
about anything and be able to find and answer with your research. To be able to accomplished
this we learn specific outcomes in ENC 1102, these are the meaning or rhetoric, discourse
communities, different genres, synthesizing complex texts, learning how to do research and
more. I can say I learn most of these outcomes.
Outcome 1: Students will be able to analyze and synthesize complex texts in ways that
demonstrate an understanding of the situated and intertextual nature of writing and
research.
In the beginning of the semester I thought the class would turn out to be very hard I didn’t
know what to except. When we first started discussing and learning about first outcome I was
pretty confused. Weeks passed by and started learning how to analyze and synthesize complex
texts more, I also learned how to cite better and better summarizing ideas about the texts we
read in class. Another thing we learned was how to join a conversation when dealing with a
discourse community, this was very straight forward and easy to understand, I still find it so
crazy how many different discourse communities there are. We went over citing but I already
had learned that in ENC 1101.
Outcome 2: Students will engage in a recursive, inquiry-based writing and research process
that is meaningful for a specific community.
This second outcome we learned how to be able to frame our research question or matter to
be able to find a specific discourse community. Our class had to based our research within the
communication discourse community, for example how do doctors communicate with their
nurse or assistance, etc... After that we were able to learn how to develop different ideas or
perspectives by researching your topic, we mostly had to use primary and secondary sources
from UCF library or anything else you could find on google. I learned a lot about how I can really
use any source to support my text. Before ENC 1102 I thought we could only use other books or
articles to support our texts I never knew we can also use surveys, videos even artifacts, this
made it easier for me to write and find supporting details for my texts. The last thing that
helped me in many ways was reviewing my peers works and getting feedback from them, this
made my text better and help me think of new ideas I could incorporate in my texts.
Outcome 3: Students will be able to interpret their research findings in order to produce
arguments that matter to specific communities by addressing real-world exigencies.
During my research paper I had a lot of obstacles many roadblocks, one of the problems I had
was my research question because of how word it I couldn’t really find many sources to for me
to write my paper. During this period of time I was really stress and I stop doing my work
because of the fact that I couldn’t find anything, after I went to my professor to seek help me
after that meeting I completely changed my research question. I finally had an actual argument
for my paper, I picked my audience and the 3 main points I was going to argue then started
planning my paper and started finally drafting it. By my final draft I had better content, I had a
better structure and good word choices, felt confident about my paper and that’s all that
matter to me.
Outcome 4: Students will examine their own conceptions of writing and research in response
to their inquiry, reading, and writing throughout the course.
By the end of this semester I can say now that I gotten better on my writing skills. I improved a
lot with my word choice while writing my paper, I also feel like I have better skills annotating
and fixing my drafts. One of the things I still find it hard is finding good sources, I find hard to
look up and have different key words. But other than that, I can reflect more on my writing I am
no longer scare or embarrassed to seek help. I grew as a student but I grew more as a writer
this semester.
