Reading activity
Let us now proceed to the reading of the selection.
Let me read it first.

Bonsai
Edith Tiempo
All that I love
I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box
Or a slit in a hollow post
Or in my shoe.

All that I love?

Why, yes, but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son’s note or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a queen,
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.

It’s utter sublimation,

A feat, this heart’s control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size

Till seashells are broken pieces

From God’s own bright teeth,
And life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child.

B. ANALYSIS

To better understand the poem, kindly count 1 to 4

for our group activity.

With your group, give your understanding of the

poem.

4
Group 1: First Stanza
All that I love
I fold over once
And once again
And keep in a box
Or a slit in a hollow post
Or in my shoe.
What is your interpretation in this stanza? The first stanza is telling us how good
it makes the speaker feel to keep little
and foldable things in a box
deliberately. The opening images
create a sense of security for the
speaker.
Second Stanza: Group 2
All that I love?
Why, yes, but for the moment-
And for all time, both.
Something that folds and keeps easy,
Son’s note or Dad’s one gaudy tie,
A roto picture of a queen,
A blue Indian shawl, even
A money bill.
What is the meaning of this stanza? In the second stanza, she goes on to
name the things she loves to keep.
Naming or labeling in literature implies
an idea that if we can name the world
then we can control it.

Third Stanza: Group 3

It’s utter sublimation,
A feat, this heart’s control
Moment to moment
To scale all love down
To a cupped hand’s size
What is your interpretation in this stanza?
In the third stanza, she now depicts the
attitude of self-exaltation and
gratification in keeping earthly things
when in fact it is an attitude we can
control if our heart so desires.
Fourth Stanza: Group 4
Till seashells are broken pieces
From God’s own bright teeth,
And life and love are real
Things you can run and
Breathless hand over
To the merest child.
What is the meaning of this last stanza? The last stanza concludes the poem by
presenting an imagery of destruction of
earthly things and the implied security
religion offers.

quotation in our lesson?

It is not love of the objects themselves that is poem

is talking rather about how the love for a person or
place can be best touched through an object that
evokes them. These objects become the keeper of
memory and of the love that is held for the person.
So even the love fades, the object remains and it is
evidence of the love that was experienced.
