Elementary School Music Teacher

1615 SW 35th St
Corvallis, OR 97333

February 5th, 2019

Dear Corvallis School District Board and Adams Elementary School Hiring Committee,

My name is Krystina SanGiovanni, and I am currently a Graduate at Oregon State University studying for
my Masters of Art in Teaching. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Music, with a degree in Choral and
Elementary Music Education in June of 2018, obtaining a 3.94 GPA and graduating Summa Cum Laude.
As a student with an aspiration to teach music in K-12 schools, my commitment to this job will be
outstanding. My goal as your music teacher is to encourage a life-long enjoyment of music both in and
outside of the school/classroom setting for children. Students come first, creating a positive musical
experience and an inclusive environment that supports creativity is my goal.

I have been part of musical communities for a major part of my life. I started my journey in Heart of the
Valley Children’s Choir, where my love of music provided me with musical leadership and a student-
director position in the choir. Provision of musical opportunities to all students, regardless of age, race,
religion, ethnicity, or disability is my guiding philosophy. Because of this, I have taken full ownership of
the music program for the Arc of Benton County. The Arc is a non-profit organization that specializes in
programs dedicated to students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/D D) and raises funds
to support art programs, one of which I currently run. I went into this job knowing that this class was
most likely the only music experience these students would receive all week, as some of my students
work anywhere between 2-5 part time jobs at once. My goal is to improve their musical experience by
teaching basic musical concepts, such as solfege and beat-patterns, and exposing the students to a wide
lexicon of musical repertoire, all while maintaining a fun and inclusive environment.

When I heard that one of my student teaching placements, Franklin K-8, no longer had a band or choir
program, I was heartbroken. I worked with the general music teacher at Franklin to set up an
extracurricular activity for students who wish to participate in choir. This activity, now known as the
Franklin Forte choir, has been approved by the Franklin PTA and is currently running until the end of
May. I took time out of my student teaching schedule to ensure that these students at Franklin were
provided with opportunities to experience choir. We practice sight-reading skills, sing age appropriate
repertoire, and experience what it is like to be in a community music setting outside of their normal
classroom. Some of these students, who are now in 8th grade, haven’t experienced choir since
elementary school. This saddens me, because some of my greatest memories in my secondary years
have been in choir with my friends. I wanted to provide that same opportunity for Franklin’s students, so
I worked tirelessly to bring the Franklin Forte choir experience to students.
Working with children has been such a wonderful experience for me, and I would be honored to be the
music teacher here at Adams Elementary. I have had over four years of experience working with
children. This includes founding music groups, budgeting my own choir and music programs, and putting
the needs of my students above all else. I want to teach and help children grow through musical
experiences, and because of my commitment and drive for student success I believe I am very qualified
for this position. After reviewing my attached resume, please feel free to contact me to further discuss
my qualifications and set up an interview. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Krystina SanGiovanni
OSU Music Major, M.A.T.
