When interviewing Mrs. Hawthorne, I found that she has worked as a librarian for
thirty-one years. At Wright Middle School, she is implementing these competencies in
her library. Working with teachers in their classrooms is one way that she implements
these competencies. Another example is assisting students in the computer lab while
they research using DISCUS. She also helps students with footnotes when they are
typing papers for submission. The resources in Mrs. Hawthorne’s library program that
she uses to implement these competencies are DISCUS, Accelerated Reader, and
Epic! Books. She stressed that DISCUS is the resource that is used most often.
When implementing these competencies, Mrs. Hawthorne is collaborating with
classroom teachers. She assists them daily in selecting materials and books that they
need for their lessons. She loves when teachers come to her for class book sets
because she doesn’t feel like they are read enough. Challenges that Mrs. Hawthorne
faces while implementing these competencies are lack of funding, time restraints, and
lack of communication. At this time, the district that Mrs. Hawthorne works for does not
allow a library budget. All of her funding comes from fundraisers that she does on her
own. She also does not think that teachers know what all librarians can help them with.
Therefore, she feels like there is a communication gap at times. Mrs. Hawthorne thinks
it is very important for librarians to communicate to the classroom teachers and let them
know exactly what they are available to assist with.
