PARISH COUNCIL – NEW COUNCILLORS NEEDED. Following the nominations process for the Local
Elections on 2nd May there will be no Parish Council election in Alderton as only 3 Parish Councillors are
standing (Keith Page, Dennis Rayton and Mike West). This means that the Parish Council is four
councillors short of the required number.
Please consider helping to make a difference for your village and community by becoming a Parish
Councillor. A thriving Parish Council is needed now more than ever to help look after the interests,
services, environment and facilities of Alderton. By offering some time, sharing your particular knowledge
and experiences and getting involved in areas of interest or concern, you can help make a difference.

ALDERTON CHURCH
Advance notice that St Margaret's Summer Fete and Gift Day will be held on Saturday 15 June in the
afternoon. There will be stalls and children's activities in the churchyard and a pamper corner, cakes, crafts
and preserves in the church. As last year, we will be serving cream teas in the village hall from 2-4pm. the
Your help is needed! Over the last couple of years, we have lost some of our stalwart team of volunteers
and need some new ones! Can you give a little of your time to help run a stall or provide teas? If you are
running a local business or make craft items for sale, would you like to take a stall? Please get in touch with
Ros Smith 620560 or Sheila Reid 621265 to make the 2019 Fair an extra special one.
Fashion Show: We had a very positive response to this event and people have said what a fun and
enjoyable evening it was. It was super to see the Village Hall full, so thank you to everyone who came along
to support it. A huge thank you to our excellent, brave models ranging from a 6 week old baby upwards!
Also, our gratitude to the enthusiastic M and Co staff who gave up their Friday evening to run it and all the
people who helped prepare and cook for it. A grand total of £710 was raised towards the church building
repairs.
Cream Teas: once again we had a great turnout for this on a warm sunny afternoon and it was lovely to see
people relaxing, enjoying their cream tea! The hall looked very attractive with the tables laid out with vintage
china donated by Beryl and Sue and flowers. Together with stalls including a lovely array of raffle prizes,
homemade jams and plants, the event made £585 for the same church fund. Thank you to all who came
along and to all those who helped to make it such a success.
April...With lambs leaping and the landscape turning green, we have come to the end of April.
Alderton's Egg Hunt held on the 7th April, was, as last year, a lovely community event with Acorns and
Oak Hill coming together to offer a timeless family event. The children set out on their quest from the hall,
looking for clues down Church Lane meeting Rev. Julia Hook at the church as they continued around the
trail until all ten had been found! With smiles on their faces, they returned to the hall to rightfully claim their
'chocolate egg', followed by Easter arts and crafts, games and, best of all, fun in the garden with friends.
The children have spent extended periods of time exploring the new activities in the garden, with the water
butt and mud kitchen being the current area of interest. At one point we performed a rain dance in the hope
that the water butt could be refilled (you would not believe how quickly a water butt can be emptied!).
As always, Acorns is focusing on growth as the warm months are upon us. The sunflowers have just begun
to sprout which is always so exciting as we wonder how something so big starts off so small! Runner beans
are next on the list, with the children growing them this year in old jam jars as they discover the magic of
growth from the seed (bean). The tank is full of tadpoles which have just started to form legs-another
magical event that we have been observing over the past month. Some of our topic conversations will focus
around the vital role of plants and trees within the environment which will help to support the importance of
taking care of our planet.
For more information relating to any aspect of the group, please call 07842161159 within school hours or,
alternatively, email aldertonacornspreschool@hotmail.co.uk.
Acorns preschool hours: Monday-Thursday 9 am-3 pm, Toddlers-stay and play Friday 10 am-12 pm.
Helping wildlife
It's finally starting to feel like Spring, gardens are blooming, and baby animals of all sorts are being born.
One way we can all make a big difference for wildlife is not only by providing food but also by providing
homes for them. Recent research into insect homes have shown that these can be just as key to boosting
insect numbers as providing lots of plants for them. There are many different types of homes for wildlife,
from small insect hotels, to bird nest boxes, to hedgehog houses. The RSPB Give Nature a
Home https://www.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/give-nature-a-home-in-your-garden/ website has
lots of ideas for things you can do to provide wildlife a home, even if you only have a small balcony space
free. If we could all do a little something in our gardens, it would add up to a whole lot of benefits for our
village wildlife.
I would also like to thank everyone for all the stamps they sent in for Evesham Bat Care. The total collection
for 2018/2019 so far has raised enough money to buy 12 tubs of mealworms for feeding hungry bats this
season. We also, have an additional far more curious plea for donations – your ‘oral care’ items! Evesham Bat Care
have been accepted onto a scheme run by Terracycle so for every kilo of product there are points awarded and those
points turn into cash once ten kilos have been sent in. Which is a huge amount and why we really need your help!
Our plea is for the following items which can be left either with me or brought along to any of Evesham Bat Care's
summer bat walks or winter fundraising events.
Please save these for us:-
* Stamps off UK and overseas post. Please leave a clear 5mm minimum margin around the stamps as anything ripped
or printed cannot be submitted.
* Empty Pringle tubes - they must be the brand Pringles and not an own brand
* Packaging from toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes and electric brush heads
* Empty or finished with toothpaste tubes, old toothbrushes and brush heads.
We cannot have dental floss or its packaging, nor interdental brushes or mouthwash bottles.
All these items would previously have ended up in your rubbish or recycling and so if we have them, they are not only
recycled but also raise much needed funds for our continuation.
To find out more about what we do and our events, find Evesham Bat Care on facebook or
at www.eveshambatcare.co.uk or ask Aimmie Woodman, 12 Orchard Road, 620373
What better way to work off all that Easter chocolate than a dog walk through the picturesque Cotswolds?
Check out our suggested walks on our website and keep an eye out for our organised walks! But don’t forget
to stop by The Gardeners Arms on your way back for a drink and perhaps something off the doggie menu.
We even offer towels for particularly wet or muddy dogs! If that’s not enough, our menus now feature points
from the two largest dieting companies.
Our gin of the month for May is Whitley Neill Parma Violet gin which boasts a luxurious handcrafted African
infusion of fresh, green and earthy cucumber with succulent Karoo aloe enhancing the overall complexity. If
that’s not enough to tempt you, why not pair it with two more of our speciality gins from our gin tapas menu?
Everybody loves a long weekend, so make the most of your May Day bank holiday and book a table at The
Gardeners Arms. We’ve got something for everyone, including a huge variety of vegan and gluten-free
dishes, and even something for the four-legged members of your family.
We know its early, but Father’s Day is fast approaching, on 16th June, so don’t forget to book your table
before we get full up! Treat your dad to a glass of wine or a pint of our locally sourced ales. We regularly
change our local ales, so ask at the bar for the latest one.
We like to keep our community up to date with our latest events and news. If you haven’t yet signed up for
our newsletter, please drop us an email at gardeners1@btconnect.com. You can also pop by to view our
