How  much  time  do  you  spend  in  nature?  Research  has  shown  that  spending  time  in  
nature  is  good  for  you.  People  who  spend  time  near  trees  and  wildlife  are  happier  and  
worry  less.  Unfortunately,  many  people  live  in  urban  areas  that  don’t  have  a  lot  of  green  
space.  But  this  is  beginning  to  change.  
 
São  Paulo,  Brazil,  is  one  of  many  cities  that  has  made  green  space  a  priority.  The  city  
has  over  11  million  residents  and  many  skyscrapers.  Parque  do  Ibirapuera  is  a  peaceful  
place  for  people  to  relax  and  connect  with  nature.  In  the  park,  visitors  can  enjoy  bike  
paths,  gardens,  and  museums.  It’s  a  beautiful  place  to  escape  the  concrete  buildings  
and  sidewalks  in  the  city.  
 
Do  you  have  a  park  in  your  city?  If  you  feel  stressed,  it  may  be  the  best  place  for  you  to  
go.  Walking  among  the  trees  and  listening  to  birds  sing  may  be  just  what  you  need  to  
feel  better.

S2:  Yes,  it’s  a  great  career.  However,  like  every  job,  it’s  not  always  easy.  Flying  
hundreds  of  passengers  is  a  huge  responsibility.  
 
S1:    What’s  your  favorite  part  of  the  job?  
 
S2:  Every  time  I  go  to  work,  I  fly  with  different  people.  And  sometimes  the  view  from  my  
office  is  amazing.  But  the  best  part  is  that  I  love  to  explore  new  places.

S1:    I  guess  having  an  airplane  as  an  office  is  hard  to  beat!  Do  you  ever  feel  that  your  job  is  
dangerous?  
 
S2:  No,  I  have  never  felt  that  I  was  in  danger.  I  have  to  fly  in  challenging  weather  at  
times,  but  airplanes  are  built  to  hold  up  in  all  kinds  of  weather.  
 
S1:    What  advice  would  you  give  someone  who  wants  to  fly  jumbo  jets?  
 
S2:  Pilots  who  fly  jumbo  jets  have  to  have  thousands  of  flight  hours  and  have  to  be  at  
an  airline  for  a  long  time  before  they  fly  the  big  planes.  My  advice  to  young  pilots  is  not  
to  give  up  on  your  goal.  It  takes  a  long  time  to  become  a  pilot.  But  if  you  take  it  one  step  
at  a  time,  one  day  you  can  fly  a  jumbo  jet!

You  are  probably  familiar  with  fireflies  that  glow  in  the  darkness  on  warm,  summer  
nights.  But  have  you  ever  heard  of  glowworms?  In  dark  caves  on  the  north  island  of  
New  Zealand,  glowworms  light  up  with  blue-­green  light.    
 
Glowworms  are  very  small  insects.  They  use  their  light  to  attract  other  insects,  their  
main  food  source.  While  most  animals  that  produce  light  live  in  the  ocean,  glowworms  
live  on  damp  roofs  of  caves.  They  are  active  at  night  and  have  the  surprising  ability  to  
turn  off  their  lights  if  they  feel  threatened.  
 
Entering  a  cave  full  of  glowworms  is  like  walking  under  a  sky  full  of  stars.  Glowworms  
are  just  one  of  many  fascinating  creatures  on  our  amazing  planet.

Should  people  allow  cats  to  roam  freely  outside?  Is  it  cruel  to  keep  them  in  the  house  all  
the  time?  Many  cat  lovers  don’t  believe  that  their  cuddly  pets  are  fierce  hunters  when  
they  leave  the  house.  Of  course,  this  behavior  isn’t  the  cat’s  fault.  Cats  are  just  doing  
what  comes  naturally.

Research  shows  that  one-­third  of  free  roaming  cats  kill  wildlife.  One  study  found  that  
cats  are  responsible  for  the  extinction  of  33  bird  species.  Cats  also  kill  lizards,  
chipmunks,  frogs,  and  small  snakes.    
 
Allowing  cats  to  freely  roam  outside  can  be  bad  for  the  cats,  too.  Outdoor  cats  can  be  
hit  by  cars,  get  sick,  and  eat  or  drink  harmful  chemicals.    
 
Cat  owners  should  keep  them  indoors,  especially  at  night.  Cats  usually  hunt  at  night.  If  
they  stay  indoors  after  dark,  they  will  kill  less  wildlife.

Fashion  changes  all  the  time.  Women  in  the  early  1900s  had  long  hair  and  wore  formal  
dresses  that  reached  the  floor.  They  didn’t  like  to  wear  styles  that  showed  their  arms  
and  legs.    
 
Things  changed  quickly  after  women  won  the  right  to  vote  in  1920.  Women  began  
attending  college.  They  fought  for  equal  rights  and  began  working  outside  the  home.    
 
All  of  these  freedoms  brought  a  new  type  of  young  woman,  called  a  flapper.    Flappers  
cut  their  hair  into  a  short,  comfortable  style,  called  a  bob.  They  replaced  their  long,  
formal  dresses  with  shorter  skirts  and  bright-­colored  sweaters.    
 
The  flapper  style  remained  popular  for  several  years.  Then,  of  course,  a  new  style  came  
along  and  took  its  place.

You’ve  read  about  disc  golf  and  volcano  boarding,  but  what  about  joggling?  Joggling  is  
a  hybrid  sport  that  combines  jogging  and  juggling.  Jogglers  compete  in  races  of  different  
lengths.    
 
The  rules  of  joggling  races  are  simple.  Jogglers  must  juggle  at  least  three  balls  while  
they  jog.  If  a  joggler  drops  a  ball,  he  or  she  must  go  back  and  continue  from  the  point  
where  the  ball  fell.

While  joggling  may  seem  silly,  jogglers  find  it  to  be  very  good  exercise.  Since  jogglers  
use  their  arms  and  legs  at  the  same  time,  it’s  an  amazing  full-­body  workout.  Joggling  
also  takes  a  lot  of  focus,  so  it’s  a  good  exercise  for  your  mind,  too.

Technology  has  made  life  better  for  most  of  us.  Now  it’s  possible  to  connect  and  chat  
with  people  all  over  the  world.  We  can  send  texts  and  e-­mails  to  stay  in  touch  with  
family  and  friends.  However,  technology  isn’t  always  helpful.  Sometimes  people  write  
things  on  the  Internet  that  they  would  never  say  out  loud.    
 
Trisha  Prabhu,  a  15-­year-­old  student  from  Illinois,  noticed  the  problem  of  online  bullying.  
She  created  ReThink,  a  cool  app  to  help  stop  bullying.  If  someone  is  about  to  post  
something  that  might  be  hurtful,  a  pop-­up  screen  asks,  “Are  you  sure  you  want  to  post  
this?  It  could  be  unkind.”    
 
Prabhu  found  that  more  than  93  percent  of  the  time  students  rethink  their  messages  
and  don’t  send  unkind  comments.  Her  app  is  helping  to  make  the  Internet  friendlier.  
Technology  is  better  for  everyone  if  people  are  nicer  to  each  other.

Children  today  usually  grow  up  with  many  toys.  You  probably  have  one  or  two  favorite  
toys  from  when  you  were  younger.  Today,  play  is  a  very  important  part  of  a  healthy  
childhood.  
 
In  the  past,  toys  were  a  small  part  of  a  child’s  life.  Children  had  more  important  things  to  
do  than  just  play.  They  often  had  to  help  with  chores  in  the  house  or  work  on  a  farm.    
 
The  earliest  toys  were  wooden  dolls,  balls,  marbles,  and  spinning  tops.  Toys  were  
simple  and  often  homemade.    
 
When  factories  started  making  toys,  they  became  cheaper  and  more  popular.  It  wasn’t  
long  before  plastic  was  discovered  and  cars,  blocks,  and  dolls  were  mass-­produced.  
 
Today,  many  children  play  video  games  as  much,  if  not  more,  than  they  play  with  toys.

Are  you  feeling  lazy?  I  bet  you  are  more  active  than  a  sloth!  Sloths  are  the  slowest  
mammals  on  the  planet.  If  you’re  ever  lucky  enough  to  see  one  in  its  rain  forest  habitat,  
chances  are  it  won’t  be  moving.  Sloths  sleep  15–20  hours  each  day!  They  stay  still  so  
long  that  algae,  a  type  of  plant,  grow  on  their  furry  coats.  The  algae  actually  help  them  
hide  in  the  trees  and  avoid  predators  such  as  cats  and  birds  that  hunt  at  night.  
 
Sloths  are  nocturnal,  which  means  they  are  most  active  at  night.  They  eat  leaves  and  
fruit  from  the  trees  and  rarely  leave  the  treetops.  They  eat,  sleep,  and  give  birth  while  
sitting  in  the  branches.      
 
So  give  yourself  a  break.  You’re  not  as  lazy  as  a  sloth!

Did  you  know  that  skirts  are  almost  the  oldest  type  of  clothing  known  to  humans?  The  
only  clothing  item  that  is  older  than  the  skirt  is  the  loincloth,  a  small  piece  of  cloth  that  
wraps  around  the  hips.  You  may  have  seen  it  in  paintings  of  humans  in  early  
civilizations;;  for  example,  in  Ancient  Egypt.  
 
In  ancient  times,  both  men  and  women  wore  skirts.  It  was  easy  to  take  a  piece  of  fabric  
and  tie  it  around  the  waist,  making  the  loincloth  an  early  version  of  the  skirt.  It  was  a  
practical  thing  to  wear.  
 
Later,  skirts  became  a  sign  of  wealth.  Fabric  was  expensive,  so  a  longer  skirt  showed  
that  you  had  a  lot  of  money  to  buy  more  fabric.  Longer  skirts,  which  were  in  fashion  for  
centuries,  also  covered  more  of  the  body.      
 
Today,  skirts  can  have  unique  shapes  and  unusual  styles,  and  use  a  lot  of  different  
kinds  of  fabric.  Some  people  like  short  skirts,  and  some  people  prefer  long  skirts.  It’s  
really  up  to  you  to  decide  your  own  style.

How  do  you  celebrate  the  New  Year?  Do  you  spend  the  evening  watching  fireworks  
with  family  and  friends?  If  you  live  in  Vietnam,  New  Year  celebration  isn’t  just  a  one-­day  
event.  Tet  Nguyen  Dan,  or  Tet,  is  the  biggest  and  most  popular  festival  in  Vietnam.  The  
festival  lasts  for  several  days.    
 
The  Tet  Festival  is  a  time  to  celebrate  the  beginning  of  a  new  year,  but  it’s  also  an  
important  time  to  remember  your  ancestors.  Families  gather  to  decorate  Tet  trees,  
prepare  many  traditional  Tet  foods,  and  spend  a  lot  of  time  together.    
 
To  prepare  for  Tet,  people  clean  their  homes  to  get  rid  of  bad  luck  from  the  old  year.  
They  decorate  their  houses  with  colorful  flowers.  Adults  and  children  buy  new  clothes  
and  shoes  to  wear  on  the  first  days  of  the  New  Year.  It’s  also  believed  that  the  way  you  
treat  others  just  before  the  New  Year  will  determine  your  luck  in  the  New  Year,  so  
everyone  smiles  and  behaves  nicely  in  hopes  for  a  happy  year.

In  Russia,  St.  Petersburg’s  White  Night  Festival  celebrates  the  city’s  high  school  
graduates  and  also  the  beginning  of  summer.  The  festival  takes  place  on  the  lightest  
night  of  the  year  and  usually  lasts  until  dawn.  
 
For  a  few  weeks,  there  is  no  sunset  because  the  sun  doesn’t  go  below  the  horizon.  
There’s  no  darkness,  so  the  city’s  streetlights  aren’t  lit  up.  It  seems  that  during  the  
festival  residents  and  visitors  never  go  to  sleep.  
 
The  festival  ends  with  a  celebration  called  the  Scarlet  Sails.  For  this  spectacular  event,  
millions  of  people  gather  on  the  banks  of  the  Neva  River  to  watch  an  enormous  ship  
with  bright  red  sails  float  by.  As  the  ship  slowly  moves  down  the  river,  the  city  sets  off  
fireworks  while  classical  music  is  playing.
