REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Employability of graduates is one of the measures of Higher Education Institutions to

ensure that the quality of education they provide is suitable to the needs of the industry. This

study determined the employment status of engineering graduates in one Private University in

the Philippines from the period of 2009 to 2012. Descriptive type of research method was

utilized in the study involving the total population of the graduates as respondents. The

findings revealed that the engineering graduates are highly employable with 95.54 percent

employment rating, with regular status and presently working as associate professionals in

the Philippine manufacturing companies related to their college degrees who found their first

job as walk-in applicants and stayed on their jobs for more than three (3) years.

Communication skill is considered the foremost competency learned in college that found

very useful to their job placement. (Laguador, 2016)

With the broader objectives as to make significant contribution on employment creation

or poverty reduction of country either by preparing graduates as per the employment needs of

country or making them capable enough to create new employment (self-employment), CTEVT

has been running long term and short term training programs of vocational nature under the trade
of Health, Agriculture and Construction. Therefore, in order to make CTEVT well informed

about the employment status of their graduates as well as needs of the labor market this tracer

study was conducted with a view to trace the graduates to find out the employment status as well

as their income and performance level at workplace. (Babarmahal, 2016)

This paper documents the result of a tracer study among graduates of secondary and

postsecondary Government education institutions, as well as among completers of private skills

training courses. It discusses how tracer studies can be used to assist education and manpower

planning. The study questionnaire covers employment history and job attitudes, income, and

demographic information. To strengthen the effectiveness of education and manpower planning,

tracer studies need to be organized more regularly, and their findings fed into the decision-

making process. It might therefore be desirable to set up a Tracer Study Unit which could serve

several departments and institutions simultaneously. (Kyaw, 1992)

This study aims to determine the employability of Mechanical, Industrial and Electronics

Engineering graduates which also explores the relevance of curriculum and work-related

behavior to the job placement of the graduate-respondents. Descriptive type of research was

utilized in the study. Findings showed that engineering graduates of the academic institution

under study are highly employable and gainfully employed locally while enjoying the benefits of

regular status and handling professional, technical or supervisory positions where they find their

present jobs within 1 to 6 months. Relevance of the engineering program to graduates’ present

work assignment is one of the common reasons in accepting and staying on the job while
communication skill is the most common useful ability of the engineering graduates in their job

placement and leadership, hard work and professional integrity are the work – related values

identified with very much contribution in meeting the demands of their present employment.

Curriculum is also considered relevant for Mechanical and Industrial Engineering graduates but

only slightly relevant for Electronics Engineering Graduates. (Chavez, 2017)

Employability is one of the important performance measures of higher education

institutions and tracking of graduates provides substantial input to the student development

program of the institution. This study aimed to determine the present employment status,

competencies learned in college and work – related values of the respondents that contributed to

their job placement and to determine the employer’s feedback on the job performance of the

graduates based on the leadership brand. Descriptive type of research method was utilized to

analyze the result of the study. Findings show that the average employment rating of BS

Computer Engineering graduates from 2013 to 2015 is 84.6 percent. Skills in information

technology, problem solving and communication are considered most useful competencies they

learned in college. Perseverance, love for God and hard work are the work-related values they

considered with very high contribution to their job placement. (castro, 2016)

This study was designed to examine the linkages between higher education and labor

market in Ethiopia with particular focus on the factors influencing employment opportunities of

engineering graduates from Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar Universities. For the success, the study

was guided by multiple theories like: human capital, labor market segmentation, search and
matching, status attainment, signaling, and social capital theories which used to develop the

Meta-conceptual framework that relates the entire process of the study. In addition, the research

was guided by a Pragmatism Paradigm involving mixed methods research and the collection of

quantitative and qualitative data. The research design was tracer study in a comparative

perspective whereby attempts were made to collect data from 161 engineering graduates of the

2012 cohorts, 18 employers, 16 higher education teachers and relevant documents through pilot

tested questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and document analysis, respectively

(YIZENGAW, 2016)

A small amount of inexpensive, specialized equipment provides an unlimited source of

experiments in the laboratory and in the field to corroborate lectures and homework in several

classes. As a result, students acquire “hands-on” training by calibrating and operating state-of-

the-art instruments while experiencing applied problem solving, quality control, and data

interpretation. Students learn and retain more by actively participating in class exercises, and

given the freedom to design experiments with a tracer facility, students are offered an additional

outlet of creativity. Furthermore, these projects require students to learn to work as a team. In

conclusion, tracer technologies may play an important role in our educational system to prepare

engineers for field and/or project work. An SF6 laboratory is not only applicable for colleges

with environmental engineering programs, but also for environmental science or meteorological

programs, physics departments, and even high school science classes (Peterson)
