BLAGA ALEKSOVA
According to the written documents the city of
‘Stobi was first mentioned in 197 B.C. (by Livy
XXXIIl, 19,3)!. However, the new research shows
evidence for much earlier beginning of this city in
this area, namely in the 7th or 6th century B.C,
The ancient city on the left bank of the Crna
River where it flows into the Vardar, earlier Erigon
and Axius, was identified as Stobi by J.G. Hahn?
and L. Heuzey* in the 19th century. In 1902 there
were brief investigations by A. Premerstein and N.
Vulich’. The discovering of some buildings of this
city started during the World War I, when a large
number of monuments in the city and its
surrounding were dug up and uncovered. The
systematic archaelogical research between 1920-
1940 conducted by the National Museum of Belgrad
discovered the urban part of the late roman period
of Stobi very well known today, with more public
and private buildings, an ancient Theater, and many
churches from the 4th to the 6th century A.C.
During the years 1950-1962 further excavations and
conservations were done by Yugoslav Scholarst.

THE EPISCOPAL BASILICA OR BASILICA OF BICHOP
PHILLIP
‘One of the most significant buildings which has
been in the focus of the archaeological research it
this resent period is the Episcopal Basilica, known
{as one of the most prominents of the early Christian
period on Balkan.
The latest research of the Episcopal Basilica
give a number of significant information on the
structures of the buildings its enlargements, the
decoration of the church with mosaic floors, fresco
paintings as well as the architectural decoration. All
Of this facts shows that this church, located next to
the Theater, has long lifetime.
The Episcopal basilica was completely uncove-
red to the floor level in the period between 1920-
19307, The new research shows that Basilica was
erected on a large artificial terrace built up to the
east of Via Sacra, opposite the semicircular Court®.
The Basilica was clearly the dominant architectural
feature of the western half of the city, during the
early Christian period.
In the cours of 1971 by the south wall of the
Church, the monumental quaterfoil Baptistery was

iscovered, with a piscina in the middle, bul in two
phases and used for the last time with kantharus of
white marble in the center. There has been a
baldachine over the piscina, with preserved marble
columns and capitals. The Baptistery floor is laid
with polyeehrom mosaic with characteristic early
Christian motifs set in the framework of the building
structure itself.
Originally it served for ritual immersio and in
final phases a marble kantharos indicates a new
ritual of baptism with ablution or infusion.

The Baptistery has been painted in a very rich
fresco decoration, 3 layers of which have been
discovered. The older two layers contains a large
compositions that were depicted in the walls and
niches. On them we find Christ with followers and
saints of several types portrayed. Alll of the faces so
far reconstructed are depicted en face with
emphatic wide open eyes.
‘The composition, drawing, color and technique
of the discovered paintings do not form a unified
whole, s0 they do not appear to have been executed
at the same time. Two hands can clearly be
recognized together with many repairs and
overpaintings. The artistic execution makes use of a
broad palette and coloristic modelling, carried out in
the technique al secco and a smaller part in al
fresco!
