Fragment of a treseo. 34 ‘One of the new centers where archaeological excavations were made during the summer in 1976 is also the town of Ballsh. In this small town. of the Mallakastra district in southwestern Alba- fhia the archeological expedition worked on Unearthing @ building of worship, @ monumental basilica, For nearly a century in Ballsh the attention of the inhabitants of the region and of the various travellers had been drawn by a big heap of ruins which because of a projecting pillar with fan inscription on it was called, at that time, the written stones-, But folktales preserved the memory of a big monastery that had stood there Tong ago. The heap of ruins had served as a quarry fand continued as such all along the first half of the XXth century, The plunderous» excava- tions of that time unearthed numerous monu- ments like reliefs, various architectonic frag- ‘ments and stones with ancient and mediaeval in- scriptions on them. The latter are of great interest to the history of this center. The pillage of stones had heavily’ demaged the monument, a thing which was clearly shown during the recent ex- cavations, ‘What should be stressed right at the start is that the excavations brought to light a monument fof worship, a. basiliea of great historic-artistic Significance. This year's excavations unearthed nearly the whole basilica but not yet the subsi- diary structures round it which already seem to be quite complex “The basilica at Ballsh has been a monumental structure of a high level as far back as when It was first set up. This is borne put not only by the technique of construction, by its planimetrie shape but also by the architechtonic details and ornamented reliefs of great arstistic value, What strikes one's eye in the architectonic details, in the capitals, framework, pillars and arches of windows nearly all of marble, is that, in addition to certain traditional ornamental elements, there are new, entirely floral motifs realized with a Strict symmetric order but artistic perfection, ‘Of special significance are certain pilasters of basements made of limestone with all four sides worked out in relief, What makes these pilasters still more interesting are the rich ornaments of the reliefs and the crafismanship with which they have been worked, Floral motifs, ivy and grape~ vine leaves predominate also on the reliefs of these pilasters, But on the reliefs we come across also other figures among which dolphins and other fish, various birds including peacocks and occasionally also animals. On the face of one of the pilasters is carved the effigy of a man, a fi- sherman holding a reed in his right hand with two strings at end of each of which hangs a fish.
