Universal Design for Learning (UDL): To allow for ELLs and students who struggle with reading to be able to
use these tools to help them gain understanding of the important people and events throughout World War
II. There are many different study options which allow students to learn in a way that will be the most
beneficial to them, and there are options for students to be able to listen to the flashcards, which will allow
them to connect what they see visually with what they hear. For engagement, I will allow extra credit
opportunities for “mastery” of the cards or if they can show me they have completed questions or activities in
a quiz set. For action and expression, I will continue working with this vocabulary with my students as they
create their presentations with partners.

We will begin the lesson by watching the BrainPop video with the captions on so students are able to get an
overview of World War II. I will then go over every term in the Quizlet that I have created, so that the
students are familiar with the terms. I will then give students access to the Quizlet so they can begin to learn
and practice with the terms. After viewing and practicing with the terms, the students will be put in partners
for their presentations, which will consist of comparing and contrasting two important people or events that
are in the Quizlet flashcards (the students can choose other events or people not included in the flashcards,
but it will need to be approved by the teacher prior to the presentation) and research the people or events
they have chosen with their partners so they can present to the class how they were able to compare and
contrast the two. We will then go through the test as a class to provide whole-group feedback and allow for
students to see what they got wrong.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will work on quizlet individually
until they feel comfortable with the terms. They can use any of the study cards or activities to help them, and
they can take the test until they reach a mastery level of 80% or higher. The students could work with
matching, spelling, the gravity game, etc. Giving them the opportunity to work with the flashcards and
memory games in class will help them to get a basic understanding of the topic, but the final presentation will
allow for a deep understanding of two specific people or events.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response
Many types of questions can be used in the Quizlet, depending on how the mastery test is generated by the
computer.

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Flashcards are listed on the Weebly.
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I want to allow the students the opportunity to see what vocabulary they may have gotten wrong and why
they personally missed it. I will do this as a class so as to not single out any individual students and allow
them to look at their test results to see how they compare.
After the SRT activity, the students will get in their pairs and choose whether or not they are going to choose
two events or people from World War II to compare. This will be a week long project, and I will allow
students to research their topics in class using books from the library or the technology we have available in
class.

How will the data be used? I can use the data from the test scores that the students get to inform my future
instruction. After the presentations we will begin the unit on World War II, but having the background info
from the Quizlet, their personal presentations, and the presentations of others will allow them to have a good
base for more in depth lessons and activities. This will allow me to monitor individual and group progress,
and allow me to see instant feedback from the quizlet as well as progress they make over time. I probably
would not take the initial Quizlet study work as a grade, but I would encourage students to continue studying
the terms for extra credit incentives (mentioned in UDL section).

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I have never used Quizlet to supplement instruction,
and I think it will be beneficial for students to engage in a technology based assessment that they can access
at school and at home. This will also allow me to get data on my students quickly, which I can keep records of
and use to inform further lesson planning.

Reflective Practice: I think incorporating Quizlet into this lesson is a fun way to get technology involved and
to encourage academic achievement with students. Since I am offering extra credit incentives if the students

can show me their practice, that will motivate them as well to work with the cards and learning activities on
the quizlet. To extend this activity, I could ask the students to use their knowledge of World War II from their
own research and make a “day in the life” project for them to show what it would have been like to be a 5th
grader during World War II era.
