College Composition II

Reflective Statement

2 April 2019

Reflection of the Core Values

With this semester of College Composition taught me how to research my own topic and

gather all the information I acquired and form my own view and opinion on it while seeing other.

The five core values where seen from the first week of class when talking about using a lens

application while watching a jeep commercial. Even throughout my own research and writing

my essays the core values were prominent through all of it.

Core Value I: Writing is a practice that involves a multi-stage, recursive, and social process

Core value I states that writing is a multi-stage, recursive and social process. This is true

as in all my essays were revised multiple times to make sure they are perfect. Even in class peer

reviewing both my argumentative and proposal essay and to continue taken to the writing center

at Campell Library. I learned this last semester that the writing center is an amazing way to

revise and help your paper. This year I feel like I did not need it as much as I was constantly

researching my own topic and reviewing my own papers because I wanted to form my opinion in

them myself. This really shows the progress in my writing and makes me feel comfortable to

continue being confident with my papers. Revision is only one part of this core value as it is all a

process that is repeated vigorously. As you keep writing and repeating the steps you realize that

the first draft is to get ideas down, revision helps correct and form the paper, and you repeat to

make perfection.
Core Value II: Close and critical reading/analysis is necessary for listening to and questioning

texts, arriving at a thoughtful understanding of those texts, and joining the academic and/or

public conversations represented by those texts.

Core value II was one of the most used values in college composition II. As last semester

we read text and formed are own opinion and wrote about them, in college composition II I

researched my own topic of athletic training for fourteen weeks. Reading multiple cases, writing

annotated bibliographies, using a Len's Application to see everyone's view and opinion of my

research. Through the ten sources I chose to use for my research, after evaluating how useful it

could be to me, questioning parts of the case I read to determine who was at fault, and forming

my own opinion to write my essays with. Annotated bibliographies really helped me do this as

depending on how long my source was, I would try to write about a page summary of the sources

while viewing all points in the text. I would explain the case of either negligence or false

negligence and determine whether the athletic trainer or the athlete was at fault. After forming

my own opinion, I would summarize the text and after explaining in my own words what I

thought of that as a possible source. Even during class using the critical theories with the jeep

commercial. After watching a jeep commercial that aired for the super bowl, our professor asked

us to use a Len’s Application and our critical theories. As I summarized the commercial of how

patriotic it was, I was asked if I was persuaded to buy one, and what critical theories did the

commercial lack. “Throughout the commercial it showed African Americans and how they live

on this free world in America that we all created. But when it came to the gay community, they

did not show any gay pride parades or gay families throughout the commercial.” (Nicola Turelli

Jeep Summary). Normally I wouldn’t notice the lack of the gay community in the commercial

but after learning about the critical theories and using my Len’s Application I formed my wn

opinion around it. I didn't elaborate to much in my summary but using core value II and the
critical theories I questioned the commercial and forming an opinion while not shutting out other

views of the commercial.

Core Value III: Writing is shaped by audience, purpose, and context

Writing is meant for people to read and form a story or opinion about it. With my

research for athletic training my audience was not very specific. It is more intended for anyone to

read but geared towards people who would think of this as a career or even athletic trainers

themselves. My research was to inform people in this profession or thinking about it going into

it. The purpose of me doing this is to show what mistakes are made and what a possible solution

would be to help improve this job. One point I brought up was suturing lacerations, “The idea of

having athletic trainers trained to help stitch open wounds, prescribe medication so patients don’t

have to wait days for their pharmacists. Both cases show what athletic trainers see in their line of

work but can't do because they were not taught to stitch a laceration.” (Nicola Turelli 2). This is

my own opinion but for people reading my work will give them an opinion about this topic as

well. Even using the critical theories is a way to shape the way you read text to see all points of

view. After reading an article about the African American critical theory I wrote a summary after

explaining my point of view using the lens application. After listing off some of the many things

African American culture shaped like jazz, filmmaking and science I asked myself why have

they not been given so much credit. “But, why don’t we here about as may African American

scientist or film makers as much as others. This is because back when they were in their practice

thy were still discriminated and people didn’t give them the chance that they deserved.” (Nicola

Turelli 1). Seeing this text from the lens application I saw that discrimination caused African

American culture and how the African American culture deserved more respect. Core Value III

helps you see everything from text from points of view to the context it is written. Even in my
own work I see how whoever reads my text can interpret it a thousand different ways with a

million different points of views.

Core Value IV: Information literacy is essential to the practice of writing.

Core Value IV was easily the most pronounced in my own research and text. Everything I

researched, read and wrote annotated bibliography's about plays a part in this Core Value. A big

majority of my research was lawsuits of athletic training with a mix of either the athletic trainer

was at fault or not. I had to read the cases determine my own opinion and summarize it if I

wanted to use it as a source in my research. One case I found of a head injury explained how

athlete Isiah got hit in the back of the head, was not treated and had a stroke and died five days

later. But un the article it showed no report of a concussion after the medical report. “This was

from medical examiner Dr. Andrew Rand. The report never said anything about Isiah having a

concussion.” (Nicola Turelli 1). After reading this I must determine on if I think the athletic

trainer and doctor are at fault or not. In my opinion I found them innocent and had to explain this

in my writings. Even though the death of an athlete is terrible and should never happen but using

the laws of athletic training it shows it is not the athletic trainer's fault. I can't be bias about how

an athlete died and since this is tragic I blame the trainer.
