Personal Insight

To go without Key Club is to go without air, without food, without water, without life. As

a participant of an international student led organization, whose goal is not only to provide the

key clubber with personal growth but to give back to the community in ways too numerous to

keep track of, requires a well rounded person who is able to network with professionals while

bringing spirit and enthusiasm to their peers. Having dedicated these past three years to Key

Club, I have a better and profound understanding of leadership, character building, inclusiveness

and caring than do most key clubbers.

My passion for Key Club has driven me to prioritize community service and my

responsibilities as a leader in my school as well as community, over typical teenage affairs.

Having a meeting at 3:00 pm but having a friend’s birthday party at 5:00 pm, my mind is

constantly planning ahead and thinking critically of every situation I am in. To be there for my

friend is far more important than a meeting but I have made the commitment to represent and

assist in decisions being made with some of the most influential business of people from my

community such as the founder of El Aviso magazine, mayor, and former Treasurer of the

United States. After the meeting I sprint to the car and set way to Jennifer’s party that is seven

minutes away, with no traffic, while being fashionably late for someone labeled as a best friend

and be the life of the party, as so she claims.

Being a balance of amicable, enthusiastic and professional, I have been called upon to

represent my club at organization events and help plan city projects amongst other city officials.

From being sought as a highschool student, to being provided with business cards for networking

and a note reading, “ You should think of applying for a Youth Commissionership *let me know

if you need help.” It is my experience, as a key clubber and student government leader, that has

allowed me to think outside the box to finds solutions to conundrums others have deemed

hopeless. It is giving back and being a leader that conjure meaning to my life. To imagine myself

without a neon yellow vest and an assertive tone is like earth without gravity. Knowing someone

of my age is talking and greeting the city council members with a hug rather than a handshake

astonishes those who view me as my typical whimsical and loquacious self. To be able to have

council members say, “ Okay, Delia is on it; good,” is a stupendous representation of my work

habits. To have event organizers referred to me and tell me they have been waiting for the chance

to meet with me and discuss their ideas shows how my passion for service has allowed me have a

voice in the attempts to better the quality of life for my community.

Having such a productive passion has allowed my younger siblings to thrive to be better

than me rather than to want to be me. Just like Key Club has changed my life in ways I never

thought a group of teenagers dressed in green and yellow can, I aspire to do the same for the

generations to come. Before Key Club, I had no clue what I wanted to dedicate my life to much

less what I was gifted or drawn to. Now, I know I am going to major is public health to be a

family doctor and minor in civic engagement. All to partner with a non- profit and provide

medical services to those in need in different countries. From his point on, fate defines what I

will continue to accomplish with the skills I have gained and exercised as an avid volunteer in

my community.
