The centre of Berlin, Mitte, is probably the most demanding district of
the city for any tourist. It takes a real cultural fanatic to digest all of its
overwhelming density of must-dos. Close to Museumsinsel (Museum
Island) and Unter den Linden, which connects Brandenburger Tor
(Brandenburg Gate) and Alexanderplatz, is a district made for art lovers
with an adventurous nature. It is the area for contemporary art galleries
that emerged around the infamous Auguststraße.

What is a narrow, clean and cosy
street today was a shabby half-
ruined area back in the 1990s,
when it became an epicentre of
the artistic revival in (East) Berlin.
Although “Mitte” means centre in
German, this district was not at all
an affluent one in former times. In
the 18th and 19th centuries, Au-
guststraße was called variously
“Poor Sinners Street”, “Poor
Street” and “Hospital Street”.
In the roaring twenties, the quar-
ter was inhabited by whores,
pimps, lumpenproletariat, crooks
and the like. Dozens of bars and
brothels attracted such stars as
Bertolt Brecht, Marlene Dietrich
and Franz Biberkopf, the protago-
nist of Alfred Döblin’s novel Berlin
Alexanderplatz.
Today, on Oranienburger Straße,
contemporary geishas wander
past beautiful buildings, such as
the former post office, now called
C/O, which heralds itself as the
International Forum for Visual
Dialogues and hosts interesting
photography exhibitions. Here too
is the wonderfully restored Syna-
gogue, remnant of the once flouri-
shing Jewish community. On the
pavements of the quarter, you can
spot numerous golden stones
engraved with the names of Jews
murdered in the Holocaust.
Some Jewish families have re-
turned to regain their property in
the area. Together with new in-
vestors, they have managed to
completely change the face of the
area in the last few years.
The policy of the GDR govern-
ment was to leave old buildings,
which were branded as bour-
geois, unattended or to destroy

Trotz ihrer zentralen Lage war sie
nie eine feine Adresse. Im 18. und
19. Jahrhundert hieß sie „Arme-
Sünder-Gasse”, „Armengasse“
und „Hospitalstraße“, während
der wilden 1920er-Jahre trieben
sich hier Zuhälter, Prostituierte
und Kleinkriminelle herum. Dut-
zende von Bars und Bordellen
lockten auch Größen wie Bertolt
Brecht, Marlene Dietrich oder
Franz Biberkopf, den Protagonis-
ten aus Alfred Döblins Roman
„Berlin Alexanderplatz“, an.
Moderne Geishas sind heutzuta-
ge in der Oranienburger Straße
anzutreffen. Lasziv flanieren sie
vor den herrlichen Häusern, etwa
dem alten Postfuhramt, wo C/O
Berlin — International Forum for
Visual Dialogues seinen Sitz hat
und immer wieder interessante
Fotoausstellungen bietet. Hier
befindet sich auch die prachtvoll
renovierte Synagoge, die an die
einst lebendige jüdische Gemein-
de erinnert. Viele goldene Pflas-
tersteine mit den Namen von
Juden, die hier lebten, bevor sie
im Holocaust ermordet wurden,
sind in die Gehwege eingelassen.
Manche Familien kehren nun zu-
rück. Gemeinsam mit neuen In-
vestoren haben sie der Gegend in
den letzten Jahren ein eigenes
Gesicht gegeben.
In der DDR war es üblich, alte
Bürgerhäuser abzureißen oder
verfallen zu lassen, um Platz für

structed buildings. After the fall of
the Berlin Wall in 1989, these half
ruined and neglected old build-
ings were occupied by artists,
gallerists and musicians. Salons,
clubs and cafés opened over-
night. It was the time when “eve-
rything was allowed,” as Ramm-
stein keyboardist Christian
“Flake” Lorenz recalls.
Practically the only trace of for-
mer East Berlin debris is Arthouse
Tacheles, founded by an artist
group of the same name in 1990
and constantly in danger of being
closed down. This oasis of alter-
native art in Berlin comprises
thirty studios, galleries and thea-
tre rooms, as well as a cinema, a

bar and a shop, all in poor sani-
tary condition. Therefore, it is a
thorn in the side of investors on a
glamourising mission which has
so far been pretty successful.
Gradually, Auguststraße and the
neighbouring area have turned
into a pricey quarter, with white
cube galleries, loft houses, bou-
tiques and restaurants. This de-
velopment forced many to move
out and farther afield. The clubs
went to Prenzlauer Berg or re-
turned to Kreuzberg. Some galler-
ies relocated to other streets and
districts farther west, such as the
pioneer gallery of the area and its
seemingly indispensable compo-
nent, Loock’s Wohnmaschine.
Many stayed and more moved
into the area. The famous KW
Kunst-Werke Institute For Con-

organises one of the most impor-
tant art events of Berlin – Berlin
Biennale – which takes place in
early summer every other year.
The openings can be overcrowd-
ed and sometimes it is difficult to
get to see the works. This is not
always a bad thing, though.
If you plan to visit during Berlin
Biennale, do not miss a legendary
place called Clärchens Ballhaus,
situated on the opposite side of
KW and the recently opened me
Collectors Room¹. You can join
the creme de la creme of the in-
ternational art world enjoying a
latte macchiato in the picturesque

courtyard or a Kir Royal in the
kinky dance hall slash restaurant
decorated with shiny tinsel and
mirrors. A few steps away is the
first gallery on our tour.
Eigen + Art² possesses both
strong ambitions and a visionary
mentality. The gallery is mainly
known for representing artists of
the so-called Neue Leipziger
Schule (New Leipzig School)
whose unique painterly idiom is
praised for its innovative aesthetic
of combining figurative elements
and abstract melancholy. This
deceptive impression of a brave
new world has seemed to fasci-
nate the global art scene since
the nineties, and has resulted in
steadily growing prices. In spring
2010, Neo Rauch, the most fa-
mous representative of the Leip-
zig School, celebrated his 50th
birthday; the huge party occupied
the No.1 position on the art world
gossip charts for a month before
the bash.
The founder of Eigen + Art, Gerd
Harry “Judy” Lybke, is ranked as
one of the 300 richest Germans.
Jobbing as a life model at the
Hochschule für Grafik und Bu-
chkunst (“Academy of Visual
Arts”) in GDR Leipzig, Lybke met
a group of young painters whose
works he started showing in his
private gallery or, rather, his apart-
ment in 1983. After the fall of the

Die Zahl der Galerien in der Au-
guststraße wächst bei relativ
hoher Fluktuation dennoch be-
ständig. Das berühmte KW
Kunst-Werke Institut für zeitge-
nössische Kunst¹ ist noch immer
da, wo es 1990 von dem früheren
Medizinstudenten Klaus Biesen-
bach gegründet wurde: in einer
alten Margarinefabrik. KW orga-
nisiert eines der wichtigsten
Kunst-Events der Hauptstadt, die
Berlin Biennale, die jeden zweiten
Sommer stattfindet. Die Eröffnun-
gen sind stets überfüllt, manch-
mal ist es schwierig, die Kunst
überhaupt zu sehen – was nicht
zwangsläufig ein Unglück ist.
Jenen, die zur Biennale nach Ber-

Zeit für einen Besuch von Clär-
chens Ballhaus einzuplanen. In
der Kultinstitution schräg gegen-
über des KW und des unlängst
eröffneten me Collectors Room ²
ist die internationale Crème de la
Crème der Kunstwelt anzutreffen,
gerne bei Latte Macchiato im
malerischen Innenhof des Ball-
hauses oder bei Kir Royal im
schrulligen Tanzsaal-Restaurant
mit Lamettadekor. Wenige Schrit-
te weiter befindet sich die erste
Galerie, die wir für diesen Kunst-
spaziergang vorstellen möchten:
Eigen + Art³, eine mit Ambitionen
und Visionen geführte Galerie. Sie
vertritt größtenteils Künstler der
sogenannten Neuen Leipziger
Schule, die für ihren malerischen
Duktus und ihre innovative Ästhe-
tik, die figurative Elemente mit
abstrakter Melancholie zusam-
menführt, geschätzt wird. Die
trügerischen Verlockungen der
schönen neuen Welt faszinieren
die globale Kunstszene seit den
1990er-Jahren – das legen zumin-
dest die wachsenden Preise auf
dem Markt nahe. Neo Rauch, der
bekannteste Vertreter der Neuen
Leipziger Schule, feierte im Früh-
ling 2010 seinen 50. Geburtstag.
Die Party war wochenlang Lieb-
lingsthema des allgemeinen
Kunstklatschs. Der Gründer von
Eigen + Art, Gerd Harry „Judy”

spread far beyond East Germany.
Temporary branches opened in
various hot-spots of the contem-
porary art world: Tokyo, Paris,
Berlin, New York and London. The
Berlin offshoot of the gallery was
established in 1992 and remains
one of the most trusted blue chip
galleries of the city. You can pur-
chase the works of such artists as
Carsten Nicolai, Martin Eder and
Neo Rauch from 250 to 80,000
Euros for graphics and drawings;
photography costs between 800
and 40,000 Euros; sculptures
between 5,000 and 120,000 Eu-
ros: The most precious goods,
the paintings, can be yours for
3,000 to 600,000 Euros.
A former employee of Galerie
Eigen + Art, Christian Ehrentraut,
successfully managed the pro-
duction gallery Liga between
2002 and 2004 in Mitte. This gal-
lery project was founded by elev-
en young artists and closed its
doors after having accomplished
its task, namely of establishing its
Andreas Blank, Installations (Details),
2010, Galerie Christian Ehrentraut

founders. A production gallery is
an art market strategy that aims
to lubricate communication be-
tween galleries and young artists,
giving the latter the opportunity to
present themselves directly. After
the Liga project, most of the
founding artists began working
with established galleries and
holding exhibitions in important
venues.
In 2005, Ehrentraut opened his
first commercial gallery on Brun-
nenstraße which he closed after
two years once it had gained
popularity. Ehrentraut started
inviting art professionals and col-
lectors to his private showrooms
on Linienstraße, where important
meetings were held and crucial
decisions made at the breakfast
table. In 2009, Christian Ehren-
traut¹ opened on Friedrichstraße.
The gallery represents twelve
artists. It mostly focuses on paint-
ing, though works of various me-
dia are represented. The prices
vary from 400 Euros for graphic

Seine Erfolgsgeschichte begann
als Aktmodell an der Hochschule
für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leip-
zig. Dort lernte er einige junge
Maler kennen, deren Werke er in

nung ausstellte, das war 1983.
Trotz Repressalien erfreute sich
die Galerie großen Erfolgs, nach
dem Fall der Mauer auch außer-
halb der früheren DDR. Lybke
eröffnete Dependancen in Tokio,
Paris, New York, London. Der
Berliner Standort wurde 1992
bezogen und ist bis heute eine
der zuverlässigsten „Blue Chip“-
Galerien der Stadt. Verkauft wer-
den Werke mit vorhersehbarer
Wertsteigerung von etwa Carsten
Nicolai, Martin Eder und Neo
Rauch. Die Preisspanne reicht
von 250 bis 80.000 Euro für Grafi-
ken und Zeichnungen, 800 bis
40.000 Euro für Fotografie, 5.000
bis 120.000 Euro für Skulpturen.
Die Malerei erzielt zwischen 3.000
und 600.000 Euro.
Christian Ehrentraut arbeitete bei
Eigen + Art, bevor er von 2002 bis
2004 die Produzentengalerie Liga
in Mitte führte. Liga war das Pro-
jekt von elf Künstlern; die Galerie
wurde geschlossen, als sie ihren
Zweck erfüllt hatte, nämlich die
Künstler am Markt zu positionie-
ren. Produzentengalerien sind
eine effektive Strategie junger
Künstler, sich zu präsentieren und
Kontakte mit Galeristen zu knüp-
fen. Im Fall von Liga funktionierte
das hervorragend, die meisten
der elf Gründungsmitglieder ar-
beiten inzwischen mit renommier-
ten Häusern und haben Ausstel-
lungen in guten Adressen.
Ehrentraut eröffnete 2005 seine
erste kommerzielle Galerie in der
Brunnenstraße. Zwei Jahre später
lief sie erfolgreich und wurde wie-
derum geschlossen. Sammler und
Kunstschaffende lud Ehrentraut
nun in seine privaten Räume in
der Linienstraße ein; Schauplatz
für Verhandlungen, Gespräche
und Entscheidungen war der
Frühstückstisch. 2009 eröffnete er
die Galerie Christian Ehrentraut¹
in der Friedrichstraße. Diese ver-
tritt zwölf Künstler, vornehmlich,
aber nicht nur, aus der Malerei.
Für Grafiken bezahlt man 400, für
größere Arbeiten zwischen 10.000
und 80.000 Euro.
In der Linienstraße, die parallel
zur Auguststraße verläuft, gibt es
ebenfalls hochkarätige Galerien:

von Tim Neuger und Burkhard
Riemschneider gegründet, stellt
Olafur Eliasson aus sowie Tobias
Rehberger, der 2009 den Golde-
nen Löwen der Biennale Venedig
erhielt. Auch die rätselhaften Ar-
beiten von Isa Genzken, die
Deutschland 2007 bei der Bienna-
le in Venedig vertrat, sind hier zu
sehen. In einem Hinterhof etwas
weiter die Linienstraße hinauf
befindet sich die Galerie und

Parallel to Auguststraße, Linien-
straße offers the art tourist several
galleries representing remarkable
artists. Neugerriemschneider¹,
founded in 1994 by Tim Neuger
and Burkhard Riemschneider,
shows the work of all round art
popstar Olafur Eliasson, as well
as the 2009 Venice Biennale’s
Golden Lion winner Tobias Reh-
berger, and the enigmatic work of
Isa Genzken who represented
Germany at the Venice Biennale
in 2007.
In a backyard a little farther up
Linienstraße, you can find the
Gallery and Bookshop for Art
Books Barbara Wien/Wilma Lu-
katsch². First opened by Wien in
1988 in Charlottenburg, West
Berlin, the space moved to Mitte
in 1998 and started showing con-
temporary art. After five years of
working at the gallery and pub-
lishing house, art historian Wilma
Lukatsch became a partner. The
gallery is an absolute must for
Fluxus and conceptual art lovers!

The last book project by Fluxus
pioneers Tomas Schmit and Wil-
ma Lukatsch is one of the treas-
ures available. In the past 22
years, Barbara Wien has pub-
lished more than thirty artbooks.
Those and many other rare publi-
cations are available in a tranquil
sous terre. The pleasant atmos-
phere and competent staff will
make your visit worthwhile.
Passing Wien and Lukatsch into
the second backyard, you’ll find
gallery Kuckei + Kuckei³. The
brothers Ben and Hannes Kuckei
manage this gallery of about 300
square metres. They share their
back wall with the recently
opened Thomas Olbricht collec-
tion and KW from Auguststraße.
The brothers moved to Mitte after
generating quite a hype around
their gallery in West Berlin, where
they had a space on the “Vierte
Etage” (“Fourth Floor“). In col-
laboration with Lybke and the
collectors Gabriele and Joachim
von Ribbentrop, they organise
annual benefit auctions for street

Barbara Wien eröffnete sie 1988
in Charlottenburg, 1998 zog sie
nach Mitte um und begann, zeit-
genössische Kunst auszustellen.
Die Kunsthistorikerin Wilma
Lukatsch, die fünf Jahre lang in
der Galerie und dem Verlag gear-
beitet hatte, wurde ihre Partnerin.
Pflicht ist diese Galerie für alle,
die Fluxus und Konzeptkunst
schätzen: Das letzte Buchprojekt
der Fluxuspioniere Tomas Schmit
und Wilma Lukatsch ist nur eine
der präsentierten Kostbarkeiten.
Barbara Wien hat in den letzten
22 Jahren über dreißig Kunstbü-
cher veröffentlicht, die es zusam-
men mit vielen weiteren seltenen
Publikationen und mithilfe kompe-

tenter Ansprechpartner in dem
Souterrain zu entdecken gibt.
Hinter jenem von Wien und Lu-
katsch gibt es einen zweiten Hof,
in dem die 300 Quadratmeter
große Galerie Kuckei + Kuckei²
untergebracht ist. Geführt wird sie
von den Brüdern Ben und Hannes
Kuckei, die Rückwand teilen sie
mit der unlängst eröffneten Kunst-
sammlung von Thomas Olbricht
und dem KW in der Auguststraße.
Die Brüder generierten zunächst
einen großen Hype um ihre Gale-
rie in Westberlin, wo sie in der
„Vierten Etage“ ihre Räume hat-
ten, ehe sie nach Mitte zogen.
Zusammen mit Lybke und den
Sammlern Gabriele und Joachim
von Ribbentrop organisieren sie
alljährlich Wohltätigkeitsveranstal-
tungen für Straßenkinder, bei de-
nen eigens für diesen Anlass ge-
fertigte Werke verkauft werden.
Seit 1998 vertreten sie in ihrer
Galerie in einem der schönsten
Hinterhöfe Mittes junge innovative
Kunst. Das Obergeschoss und die
Remise sind temporären Ausstel-
lungen vorbehalten, das Unterge-
schoss beherbergt die vertretenen
Künstler. Zu kaufen gibt es Origi-
nale unter anderem von Tamara
Grcic, Guy
Tillim und Cle-
ment Page.

1998, they have represented
young innovative artists in one of
the most beautiful backyards in
Mitte. The upper floor and the old
coach house host temporary ex-
hibitions, whereas the sous terre
functions as a permanent show-
room for the gallery’s artists. In-
terested buyers can find original
works from 1,000 to 80,000 Euros
by artists such as Tamara Grcic,
Guy Tillim or Clement Page.
Farther down Linienstraße, gallery
Esther Schipper¹ provides a
space for conceptual art. You’ll
spot the building from afar by the
wall painting on the outside,
which reads “Es ist nur eine Frage

der Zeit” (“It is only a matter of
time”). Established in 1989 in
Cologne, its predecessor Schip-
per + Krome was brought to Ber-
lin in 1995, with partner Michael
Krome. Since 2001, it has occu-
pied a series of remarkably at-
mospheric rooms in a very pleas-
ant small courtyard leading to the
gallery. High ceilings and win-
dows at the end of the room
make you feel as if you were in a
monastery. The architecture com-
plements the programme which
includes works by Liam Gillick,
Ceal Floyer and Philippe Parreno.
Kicken Berlin² focuses mainly on
photography. In Berlin since 2001,
the gallery of Rudolf and Annette
Kicken actually goes back about
thirty years and was established
originally in Aachen together with
Wilhelm Schürmann. The gallery
on Linienstraße has a very stylish
facade and display windows. The
building houses a spacious gal-
lery as well as private showrooms
– “cabinets of desire” – where the
art collector can enjoy a quiet and
relaxing atmosphere and has the
choice of a vast range of 20th-
and 21st-century photography.
The main focus though is on
20th-century avant-garde German
and Czech artists.
Brunnenstraße begins at the inter-
section on Rosenthaler Platz with
its popular Hotel Circus and car-
ries on towards Gesundbrunnen.

Ebenfalls in der Linienstraße liegt
die Galerie Esther Schipper ¹, die
sich auf Konzeptkunst konzen-
triert. Das Gebäude ist schon von
Weitem an dem groß aufgemalten
„Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit” zu
erkennen. Esther Schipper ging
aus der 1989 in Köln mit Michael
Krome gegründeten Galerie
Schipper & Krome hervor und
kam 1995 nach Berlin. Seit 2001
ist sie in dem idyllischen Hinterhof
zu finden, mit beeindruckenden
Räumen: Hohe Decken und Fens-
ter an der Stirnseite vermitteln
eine klosterähnliche Atmosphäre,
die Architektur komplementiert
die Kunst etwa von Liam Gillick,
Ceal Floyer und Philippe Parreno.
Rudolf und Annette Kicken grün-
deten vor dreißig Jahren gemein-
sam mit Wilhelm Schürmann eine
Galerie in Aachen. 2001 zog sie in
die Hauptstadt. Kicken Berlin² in
der Linienstraße ist dank schicker
Fassade und großer Schaufenster
leicht zu finden. In dem Gebäude
sind eine geräumige Galerie und
private Ausstellungsräume unter-
gebracht, Kunstsammler können
in entspannter Atmosphäre aus
einer beeindruckenden Samm-
lung von Fotografie aus dem 20.
und 21. Jahrhundert wählen.
Deutsche und tschechiche Avant-
garde stehen hier im Vordergrund.
Die Brunnenstraße beginnt mit
der Kreuzung am Rosenthaler
Platz, wo das populäre Hotel Cir-
cus steht, und führt hinauf zum

dernde Kunst- und Galerienland-
schaft residiert unweit der Kreu-
zung die Berliner Senatskanzlei
für kulturelle Angelegenheiten, die
auch die Vergabe von Fördergel-
dern an Künstler koordiniert. Un-
ter den Galerien, die die Gegend
wieder verlassen haben, sind die
New Yorker Galerie Goff + Ro-
senthal, Jan Winkelmann und der
Artnews-Projektraum. Geblieben

With an overview of the constant
coming-and-going of art spaces
on the street, you find the Berlin
“Senatskanzlei für kulturelle An-
gelegenheiten” (“Senate Chancel-
lery for Cultural Affairs”) which
dispenses grants to artists in
Brunnenstraße. Among those who
left the area recently, are Goff +
Rosenthal from New York, Jan
Winkelmann and Artnews’ project
space. Among those who stayed
and developed in the area are
Nice and Fit¹, owned by Helena
Papadopoulos and gallery Birgit
Ostermeier ².
New arrivals include Brunnen-
straße No. 9, a funky, innovative
studio and gallery house, which
uses contemporary forms and
new materials, fusing alternative
esprit and refined design in ac-
cordance with the Berlin spirit. If
you happen to have headphones
with you, do find a specially de-
signed input and connect them to
the building so you can listen to
its heartbeat. In this city, however,
new buildings such as this one
often generate sceptical reac-
tions. Some gallery owners, art-
ists and art professionals seem to
oppose the idea that Berlin’s art
scene is becoming less alterna-
tive and more settled, and that
galleries and off-spaces have
overgrown the original spaces
where they squatted run-down
rooms. KOW ³ is a good example.
Since September 2009, a Ger-
man, Alexander Koch, an Aus-
trian, Nikolaus Oberhuber, and a

Frenchwoman, Jocelyn Wolff,
have been carrying out their busi-
ness in this spectacular location.
Along with exhibitions, they initi-
ated KOW ISSUES, a project that
includes lectures and teaching,
concerts and parties, art fairs and
bookselling, and concentrates on
the relationship between art and
society. In May 2010, they won
the Emerging / Established Gal-
lery Prize at the Vienna art fair.
Among their artists you can find
Chris Martin, Tina Schulz and Cle-
mens von Wedemeyer.
During opening nights on Brun-
nenstraße, you might get the im-
pression you are walking through
New York or London, a feeling
possibly enhanced by the pres-
ence of fashion labels like Ben
Sherman, the Comme des Gar-
çons guerrilla store and vintage
Ray-Bans everywhere. Following
the stream, you can shake off the
day’s worries and sniff concrete
dust in the minimalistic Kim Bar.

den Neuankömmlingen sticht das
innovative Atelier- und Galerien-
haus Brunnenstraße 9 heraus,
dessen Architektur sich zeitge-
nössischer Formen und neuer
Materialien bedient. Ganz dem
Berliner Innovationsgeist entspre-
chend, wird hier alterna-tive Le-
benseinstellung mit raffiniertem
Design kombiniert. An der Fassa-
de gibt es einen Anschluss für
Kopfhörer, um dem Herzschlag
des Gebäudes zu lauschen. Nicht
alle mögen das, neuen Gebäuden
wie diesem begegnet man in Ber-
lin durchaus skeptisch. Manche
Galeristen, Künstler und Kunst-
profis scheinen sich allgemein
nicht mit der Tatsache anfreunden
zu wollen, dass die Berliner
Kunstszene weniger alternativ
und wesentlich bodenständiger
geworden ist – und dass viele
Galerien und „Off Spaces“ aus
den alten, oft charmant-verfalle-
nen Räumen, die sie im Namen
der Kunst besetzt hatten, heraus-
gewachsen sind.
Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist KOW³.
Seit September 2009 führen ein
Deutscher, Alexander Koch, ein
Österreicher, Nikolaus Oberhuber,
und eine Französin, Jocelyn Wolff,
ihre Galerie in dem spektakulären
Bau. Zusätzlich zu den Ausstel-
lungen haben sie KOW ISSUES
ins Leben gerufen, ein Projekt,
das Vorträge, Konzerte und Par-
tys, Kunstmessen und Buchhan-
del umfasst – immer mit der Frage
nach dem Verhältnis von Kunst
und Gesellschaft im Mittelpunkt.
Im Mai 2010 gewannen sie dafür
den „Emerging / Established Gal-
lery Prize” der Viennafair in Wien.
Unter den Künstlern, die sie ver-
treten: Chris Martin, Tina Schulz
und Clemens von Wedemeyer.
Während der Vernissagen erinnert
die Atmosphäre auf der Brunnen-
straße bisweilen an New York
oder London, wozu die Präsenzen
von Modelabels wie Ben Sherman
oder der Comme des Garçons
Guerrilla Store sowie zahllose
Vintage-Ray-Ban-Sonnenbrillen
das Ihre beitragen. Wer seine
Alltagssorgen für eine Weile ver-
gessen möchte, schließt sich dem
Strom der Kunstflaneure an, der
unweigerlich auch in die minima-
listische, sich erfolgreich gegen
jede Behaglichkeit verwehrende
Kim Bar führt. Es riecht nach Ze-
ment und das Bier ist überteuert,
nichtsdestotrotz tummelt sich die
Szene hier gerne und ausgiebig.
Etwas abseits der Torstraße und
in Nachbarschaft zur berühmten
Volksbühne und dem Kino Baby-
lon gibt es weitere Ziele. Darunter
die temporäre Geschäftsstelle der
Münchner Galerie Zink⁴ und die
ebenfalls höchst beliebte Bar 3,
in der Kunstfreunde und Künstler
zierliche Kölschgläser leeren – die
meisten jedenfalls. Im nahe gele-
genen Kino Babylon gibt es ein-

Overpriced beer and a complete
lack of cosiness do not prevent
this place from overbrimming with
an artistic crowd.
A little off Torstraße, and close to
the famous Volksbühne theatre
and cinema Babylon, you find yet
more interesting places to visit.
Among them is the temporary
office of the Munich gallery Zink¹,
and another artist bar, Bar 3, a
cool place where artistic people
drink tiny beers called “Kölsch”,
well at least some of them do.
The nearby cinema Babylon of-
fers “Video Art at Midnight”;
the programme is organised by
gallery Olaf Stüber² and collector
Ivo Wessel. The free screenings
take place once a month on Fri-
days. Together with Anna-Cathari-
na Gebbers, the founder of the
exhibition space Bibliotheks-
wohnung³, Stüber also writes a
blog called “Film and Media Art”
where they tackle various issues,
from art matters to studio visits.
Gebbers, an art critic and curator,
has a space close to Friedrich-
straße and presents high quality
art projects there. Recently, she
was involved in a residency pro-
gramme at the thrilling 176/Zablu-
dowicz Collection, London.
Olaf Stüber’s gallery has existed
since 2001 and focuses on video
art. Check their website if you
want to visit a lecture. The gallery

Not far from Babylon is gallery
Christian Nagel⁴, which recently
celebrated its 20th anniversary.
Founded in Cologne in 1990, the
gallery moved to Berlin around
2002. Nagel presents a combina-
tion of conceptual art dating back
to the 1960s as well as an excit-
ing new generation of artists, all
occupying critical and question-
ing positions on society and the
art market. Among his artists are
Kai Althoff, Jiang Congyi and
Heimo Zobernig.
A couple of buildings farther
along, you’ll find Wilhelm Schür-
mann⁵. The collector and art pro-
fessional organises three or four
exhibitions a year connected to
the collection.
Just around the corner is the
space of young gallerist Lena
Brüning⁶. A child of an art loving
household, she started in 2005
from rather modest rooms, but
with an ambitious and interesting
programme. In the 1960s, Brün-
ing’s grandparents founded a
renowned gallery called Schmela
in Düsseldorf. They were trailblaz-
ers in showing artists like Joseph
Beuys, Yves Klein and Gordon
Matta Clark. In Lena Brüning’s
gallery, one finds works by John
von Bergen, Lucile Desamory,
John Hodany and others.

projekte. Kürzlich war sie an ei-
nem Residenzprogramm der fas-
zinierenden 176/Zabludowicz
Collection in London beteiligt.

Zurück zum Babylon, beziehungs-
weise in dessen Nähe, zur Galerie
Christian Nagel ³, die im April
2010 ihr 20. Jubiläum feierte.

Nagel präsentiert Konzeptkunst
aus den 1960ern sowie jüngere
Künstler, deren Arbeiten sich kri-
tisch mit Gesellschaft und Kunst-
markt auseinandersetzen. Darun-
ter: Kai Althoff, Jiang
Congyi und Heimo Zobernig.
In der Nähe liegen die Räume des
Sammlers und Kunstprofis Wil-
helm Schürmann⁴, der jährlich
drei bis vier mit der Sammlung
verbundene Ausstellungen orga-
nisiert. Um die Ecke betreibt Lena
Brüning⁵ ihre Galerie. Brünings
Großeltern waren Wegbereiter für
Künstler wie Joseph Beuys, Yves
Klein oder Gordon Matta Clark,
sie gründeten in den 1960ern die
Düsseldorfer Galerie Schmela.
Brüning begann ihre Laufbahn als
Galeristin 2005 in eher bescheide-
nen Räumen, aber mit ambitio-
niertem Programm. Sie zeigt Ar-
beiten etwa von John von Bergen,
Lucile Desamory oder John Ho-
dany. Kamm⁶ liegt direkt neben
Brünings Räumen. Die Kunsthis-
torikerin Joanna Kamm eröffnete

Wall to wall with Lena Brüning is
Galerie Kamm ¹. Joanna Kamm,
an art historian, started it in 1998
with the S.S.K–Laden, or Sam-
meln-Sie-Kunst-Laden (“Collect
Art Shop”). Since 2001, it has
been exhibiting innovative Ger-
man and international art, with an
interest in various media. Kamm’s
recently rather strict conceptual
programme veers towards a more
playful understanding of this ap-
proach. Among the 15 artists
represented by the gallery are
Kathrin Sonntag, Kate Davis and
Agnieszka Brzezanska.
In true nomadic spirit, gallery
Büro BQ² has been wandering
around Berlin since 2009. Found-
ed by Yvonne Quirmbach and
Jörn Bötnagel, it has become a
Berlin success story. The gallery
is not a project space but rather a
commercial venue with a philo-
sophical approach – not to stay
put, but to renew itself with each
exhibition. Since it started in Co-
logne in 2007, the gallery has
been able to introduce its artists
to the most prominent art fairs
such as Basel Basel, Basel Miami
and Frieze London.* Among the
artists supported by the gallery
are Richard Wright, Kriwet and
Matti Braun.

walk on the beautiful Museums-
insel (Museum Island), past the
Lustgarten, along the Spree.
Don’t expect a pale shadow of
Paris’ riverbank. Forget Paris,
mon amour, Berlin is more than a
temporary hotspot for contempo-
rary cultural and intellectual ad-
venture. Its old majestic muse-
ums with splinter traces of WW2
shell attacks, grand exhibitions,
and the magnificent cathedral
Berliner Dom are worth your at-
tention. Amidst these old glories
you shouldn’t miss the contem-
porary sand-coloured building by
American architect David Chip-
perfield, who also designed the
new Museum Folkwang in Essen.
The proud owner of the building
is Heiner Bastian. The former sec-
retary of Joseph Beuys worked
for the Erich Marx Collection in
Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin’s
Museum for Contemporary Art,
for many years. Along with Bas-
tian’s collection, the building ac-
commodates the Contemporary

Simon Dybbroe MØller, „Abstract For A

Zeit für eine Pause, ein Spazier-
gang auf der malerischen Muse-
umsinsel, durch den Lustgarten
und entlang der Spree bietet sich
an. Kein blasser Abglanz der Pa-
riser Uferpromenaden ist diese
Route – forget Paris, mon amour!
Berlin zeigt hier, dass es mehr als
ein temporärer „Hotspot“ für zeit-

worked long and hard to turn CFA
into a trademark on the global art
scene. Brunnet decided not to
rest on his laurels, and has re-
cently opened a new space
named Vittorio Manalese & Fils in
Charlottenburg, following the new
trend towards opening galleries in
the western parts of Berlin. In the
hallrooms of CFA, you can find
works by artists such as Sarah
Lucas, Chris Ofili or Georg Her-
old. Back on the main land, we
find the HoffmannCollection¹.
Erika Hoffmann lives and breathes
art. The Hoffmann family started
collecting in the late 1960s; since
1997, both the living and work
spaces of the family have been
open to the public. Erika Hoff-
mann manages the collection
alone, since her husband Rolf
died in 2001. She used to do the

Berlin as having good soil for

not, why should there be more
than 400 professional galleries in

Der Dom und die altehrwürdigen
Museen mit ihren grandiosen
Ausstellungen erzählen Geschich-
te, ebenso die Einschusslöcher
aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, die
man noch immer in den Fassaden
sieht. Ein Gebäude allerdings
bricht mit der Vergangenheit:
der sandfarbene Bau des ameri-
kanischen Architekten David
Chipperfield, der bereits das neue
Museum Folkwang in Essen ent-
warf. Stolzer Besitzer der moder-
nen Architektur ist Heiner Bastian,
einst Sekretär von Joseph Beuys,
und viele Jahre für die Sammlung
Erich Marx in Berlins Museum für
zeitgenössische Kunst, dem
Hamburger Bahnhof, tätig. Der
Chipperfield-Bau beherbergt ne-
ben seiner Sammlung die Galerie
Contemporary Fine Arts¹, die
Bruno Brunnet, Nicole Hackert
und Philipp Haverkampf mit viel
Engagement zu einem Markenzei-
chen in der globalen Kunstszene
aufgebaut haben. Brunnet hat
unlängst eine neue Galerie na-
mens Vittorio Manalese & Fils in
Louise Lawler, „Taking Place“, Installation,
2009, Sprüth Magers
Charlottenburg eröffnet, generell
ist derzeit eine Galerienmigration
in den Westen der Stadt zu beob-
achten. In den Schausälen der
CFA-Galerie auf der Museums-
insel gibt es Sarah Lucas, Chris
Ofili oder Georg Herold zu sehen.
Auf dem „Festland“ findet sich
die Sammlung Hoffmann ². Erika
Hoffmann lebt Kunst. Die Familie
begann ihre Sammlung in den
1960ern, 1997 wurden ihre priva-
ten und Arbeitsräume für Besu-
cher geöffnet. Seit dem Tod ihres
Mannes Rolf 2001 betreut Erika
Hoffmann die Sammlung alleine.
Früher führte sie Besucher noch
selbst, heutzutage begleitet eine
professionelle Kraft das Publikum
auf einer Tour de Force zu Mike
Kelley, Katarzyna Kozyra, Hiroshi
Sugimoto, Marcel Broodthaers,
Andy Warhol und vielen mehr.
Zurück zur touristenträchtigen
Oranienburger Straße, wo wir
dem Spaziergänger einen Besuch
von Sprüth Magers³, empfehlen,
die Galerie ist eine echte Berliner
Erfolgsgeschichte. Der Berliner

Euros, whereas prices for origi-
nals vary and can reach up to
seven-digit numbers. Richard
Artschwager, John Baldessari and
Peter Fischli/David Weiss are all
represented by the gallery.
We are almost finished with our
art tour of Berlin Mitte and find
ourselves back on Auguststraße,
where in April 2010 Thomas Ol-
bricht opened me Collectors
Room Berlin¹. Beside his collec-
tion and a café, the building, pre-
dictably hated by conservative
Berlin non-conformists, has, of
course, loft spaces. In case you
are wondering: the “me” is not
representative of the collector’s
ego-trip, but stands for “Moving

Energies”. Although the owner of
one of the largest European col-
lections, which numbers around
2,500 objects, must be well aware
of the double meaning. In the
current exhibition of this “different
kind of museum,” as Olbricht
calls it, are works by Cindy Sher-
man, Kehinde Wiley and Johan
Creten next to a vast collection of
curiosities in the “Wunderkam-
mer” (curiosity cabinet). Next, we
pass the Keyser Soze bar on the
junction of Tucholsky- and Au-
guststraße. Culture bar alert: an
art shooting star from Berlin, Tino
Sehgal, is said to frequent this
place...
In case of an air-raid siren or more
realistic danger, we should run
towards the massive bunker on
Reinhardstraße and hide between
the art works of the Boros Col-
lection². The bunker was built in
1942, as a shelter for up to 2,500

Magers’ Entscheidungen, Köln
und München zu verlassen, ist zu
verdanken, dass die Oranienbur-
ger Straße endlich eine hochwer-
tige Galerie hat. 600 Quadratme-
ter voller Kunst und fundierter
Ideen gibt es hier, dazu ein Ge-
schäft namens Image Movement,
in dem Künstlerfilme und Filme
über Kunst verkauft werden.
Sprüth und Magers verstehen
sich als Mentorinnen und Dienst-
leister der 45 Künstler, die sie
betreuen, die meisten von ihnen
sind auch in Sammlungen wichti-
ger Museen vertreten. Selbstver-
ständlich kann man ihre Arbeiten
in der Oranienburger Straße kau-
fen, Editionen gibt es für wenige
tausend Euro, Originale erreichen
Preise bis in den siebenstelligen
Bereich. Richard Artschwager,
John Baldessari und das Duo
Peter Fischli/David Weiss gehören
zu den Künstlern, die hier betreut
werden.
Unser Kunstspaziergang nähert
sich seinem Ende und erneut der
Auguststraße, wo Thomas Ol-
bricht im April 2001 seinen me
Collectors Room Berlin¹ eröffnet
hat. Neben seiner Sammlung und
einem Café befinden sich in dem
Gebäude auch von konservativen
Berliner Nonkonformisten instän-
dig verabscheute Loftwohnungen.
Wer sich über das „me” im Na-
men der Galerie wundert: Es steht
nicht für den Egotrip des Samm-
lers, sondern für „Moving Ener-
gies”. Dass der Besitzer einer der
mit über 2.500 Objekten größten
Sammlungen Europas sich der
Doppeldeutigkeit der Buchstaben
bewusst ist, ist dennoch anzu-
nehmen. In der aktuellen Ausstel-
lung seines „etwas anderen Mu-
seums”, wie Olbricht es nennt,
sind Arbeiten von Cindy Sherman,
Kehinde Wiley und Johan Creten
zu sehen, außerdem lockt die
„Wunderkammer“ mit einer reich
bestückten Kuriositätensammlung.
Es geht vorbei an der Keyser
Soze Bar, Kreuzung Tucholsky-
und Auguststraße. Kulturalarm:
Der Berliner Shootingstar Tino

Heimstatt für Kunst, die er, wie
Boros sagt, nicht versteht – und

In 2009, Jörg Johnen moved
from the glass modernist pavilion
near Jannowitzbrücke to the
Berlin borough Mitte, into a
beautiful old house on Marien-
straße dating from 1830.
ph-projects ² and the Viennese
gallery Krobath³ have also
moved into the building. Next
door one finds the Johnen col-
lection, an artist studio and living
space, as well as the gallery
owner’s living quarters. Johnen
gallery holds a good stable of
artists; amongst others, he repre-
sents Dan Graham, Candida
Höfer and Tino Sehgal.
