ENGL 1301.01

20 February 2019

On February 15 I went to the Alvin Community College library to get information for my

short academic response. Before looking around the library I decided to ask a librarian a couple

of questions. I had the pleasure of talking to Cindie Valis. Ms. Valis is the circulation assistant in

the library. She started off the conversation talking about the library’s hours of operation. The

Library is open from Monday through Saturday. On Monday’s through Thursday’s the library is

open from 7:30am to 9:00pm. On Friday it is open from 7:30 to 5:00pm, and on Saturday from

9:00am to 1pm. I then proceeded to ask about the services offered by the library on campus and

online. She told me that the library offers faxing, printing, coping, scanning, textbooks for

classes, research help, math classes, variety of books, magazines and newspapers, and individual

or group tours of the library. The services I listed are only available in person. The online

services are just as helpful. Ms. Valis told me that there are two data bases called Ebson and

Credo that students can utilize for research purposes. These data bases have reliable information

that can be used for research papers. The library also has many spaces that students can utilize.

There are 9 study rooms, 24 computers, chairs, tables, couches, classrooms, and a lounge. From

visiting the library in the past, I found these spaces are very useful and I recommend students

take advantage of them. The last question I asked was if there are any upcoming events in the

library. Ms. Valis responded that there are no scheduled events at the moment. After talking to

the librarian, I took a walk around the library to see the spaces mentioned by Ms. Valis. At the

very front of the library you can find the front desk where you can get assistance. At the very

back of the library, there are two classes where math classes are held, and in between you can see

chairs, desk, computers, couches, and lots of books. The study rooms are located all around the

library. Overall, the library is a great space to study or to just relax for a while.

Although I was familiar with the library before this occasion, this time it was overall a

new and great experience because I finally met a librarian and got the opportunity to learn a

couple new things. Before, I used to attend the library for a math class I had in one of the spaces

available in the library, to use a computer, and to just study in a quit place. I wasn’t aware of

some of the resource Ms. Valis tooled me about. I had no clue about the two online data bases

that could have helped me in research papers last semester. After getting to know the library

better, I intend to visit it a lot more often this semester and the upcoming ones to. All the

different resources that the library offers in the Alvin Community College can help me be

successful in college.
