Reflection

ENGL-2010
Natalie Davis-Lopez
Throughout taking this course I was exposed to various types of media. Each source of

media portraying the ideals of the few. I thought it was really interesting when we talked about

how much the head corporations control a majority of what we see on tv or hear on radios. I

never really thought about how much my knowledge was structured around the ideals of a few

powerful people. I also never thought about how much it affects our ideals as Americans.

Thinking back on the discussions it seems that media influences the decisions of the people. Not

everything projected through tv or radio is necessarily factual. But rather it is meant to create a

reaction among those that have strong beliefs on certain subject material.

When I was writing my media journal I became very aware of the number of ads that we

see every day. Our subconscious gathering information from each image reflected on tv and

every message we hear. It's interesting to see how every day we are being influenced to buy a

product or believe in a message. But it’s also interesting to see how the same ads would be

circulating numerous times. Not only spreading the message of consumption but also mentally

appeasing our ideals. It didn’t seem reasonable to think that maybe we were all just pons in a big

scheme or maybe play pieces. It was really hard to not wonder why so many images and ads and

things were thrown at us daily. Part of me was surprised that without noticing I had seen so many

things in such a short span of time. Analysing what I read and saw was also really interesting

because in the past I never really thought about what I was doing. It just seemed like a ritualistic

process and natural part of my everyday life.

Another assignment that I thought opened my eyes was the Pear paper. It was new for me

to write two opposing sides to a problem. And it made it very interesting to gain facts from both

sides of the argument. I felt like it helped me better understand what I was representing. I don’t

feel as though I was very knowledgable on the stance I chose. But after going through some

articles and seeing where the opposing sides were stemming from, it allowed me to get better

points on my argument. I had to go through numerous articles and find things that I believed

would help my paper remain educated. Some things that I looked for in the articles were a lot of

data as well as quotes from credible sources. Then once I chose the articles I wanted to use I

begin to pick out the opposing points in each paper. So that all arguments would be taken into

exception. Piecing it together was probably the most difficult thing for me because I wasn’t

positive about where I wanted to go with it. I thought about how my thinking progressed through

the project and used that as a reference to how I should structure my assignment.
