Personal Statement

Every positive aspect you do in life is a chance for you to achieve and build up your own

personal growth. A new aspect that contributed to my improvement of perspectives in the way I

interpret things is the day I made the Varsity Cheer Team. The constant challenge of waking up

at six in the morning, practicing everyday working hard and staying focused, aided me to

become more determined and committed in regards to my education, sustain my communication

skills when I had in-disciplinary projects, and confront things I never knew I was capable of that

I was afraid to try. Without the burdens that I have faced, I would not be the person I am today.

Making the Varsity Cheer Team impacted my life for the better, providing me with lots of new

understandings and characteristics about myself.

Knowing I made the Cheer Team gave me the ability to utilize strengths that I believed

were my troubles. It helped me sustain my communication skills and address social problems

with empathy and integrity. I began to be more open about myself and had different perspectives

when it came to reading and writing. I would easily elaborate in my literacy skills actually

thinking thoroughly and being able to discuss opinions for what I believed what made sense.

Presenting and discussing problems in front of a class has then became unchallenging for me

overtime. For example, Sophomore year I had an IDP in which I would always be nervous while

presenting, then came Junior year in which I became more prepared and I knew what was being
discussed. When questions were asked at the end of the presentation, I openly answered them

and provided them with eye contact.

Being told that I was on the team enhanced my learning and nurtured a commitment to

aid and improve my academic excellence. I became more determined and committed to complete

designated assignments once they were given. Being grade-cut was one of my biggest fears due

to the fact I was grade-cut for Swimming. I lacked for a couple of weeks and it is something I

deeply regret. Ever since the day I made the team, I’ve been reassuring myself to be one of the

ones to finish an assignment and turning it in on time and promptly. Education became more

important to me. I was focused and determined which then resulted into me getting Honor Roll

twice.

This big accomplishment enhanced my personal growth and gave me a new and better

understanding about myself. I became more confident in school and didn’t care about what

people thought. Before the cheer tryouts, I would always walk to school with my head down

because of my insecurities. I believed that I was not capable of anything because I didn’t accept

myself for the type of person I was which was a quiet and not really an outgoing person. Cheer

provided me with a new perspective about myself. I knew I had the ability to do anything I put

my mind to do and later on improve and learn from it. I also knew that I had to push and trust

myself in further obstacles and risks.

This aspect in my life changed me for the better. It helped me improve my literacy skills

and communication skills. I was determined and willing to do anything possible in my studies

because it would benefit me in the future regardless of what path I may go too. The constant

challenge in trying out for the cheer team impacted my life by giving me new characteristics that

I didn’t know I had and allowed me to demonstrate my skills that I have in Cheer.
