Abstract

The study entitled “Bandera Española (Canna Indica) Leaves

as Packaging Material” has a purpose of making packaging

materials (specifically cardboard) out of organic substances

instead of hazardous materials that can potentially cause more

pollution such as plastics. The researchers thought of using the

leaves of the Bandera Española plant as the main substance of

the packaging material to be created.

The researchers came up with the concept of creating

packaging materials out of Bandera Española because of the

pollution occurring in our environment. One of the causes of

worldwide pollution is the improper disposal of substances such

as packaging materials, and these are prevalently made out of

man-made, unsafe materials such as plastics. These can damage

the Earth’s surroundings, and can also lead to humans acquiring

various diseases, so the researchers thought of creating organic

yet sturdy packaging materials out of leaves instead. Bandera

Española is a common yet underrated plant within the

Philippines. It is usually found in random places, yet people

seem to not utilize them.

The data are gathered through observation and

experimentation. The procedure is done by creating three types

of packaging materials out of three sets of Bandera Española

leaves with different qualities, and the researchers found out

that the sturdiest packaging material is the one made out of

Well-grown Bandera Española leaves. The first was made out of

Poorly-grown, infested leaves, and it proved to be immensely

brittle. The second that was made out of Regular leaves turned

out to be quite strong. The last and final material that was

made out of Well-grown, healthy leaves turned out to be toughest

among the three. Additionally, the packaging material made out

of healthy Bandera Española leaves also proved to be the most

well constructed one out of the rest.

The purpose of this research is to create a packaging

material out of Bandera Española leaves. The world today is

filled with various forms of pollution, and one of the main

contributors of pollution is plastic, an immensely hazardous

substance that can cause a lot of destruction. A great

alternative for this is to create packaging materials out of

organic, environment-friendly substances, such as plants, and

the plant Bandera Española is perfect for that. It is commonly

found practically everywhere, so acquiring these plants for the

experiment would be convenient. In addition to that, this would

only cost a little, since the materials that are going to be

used for the creation of these packaging materials are natural

and can be found in the surroundings. No other complicated

procedures shall be executed in this whole experiment.
