Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: There are 22 students in this fifth-grade class, 14 boys
and 8 girls. The majority of the class is Caucasian with a few Hispanics. In Mr. Erickson’s room the
students sit in 6 pods of 3 or 4. In Mr. Clark’s room the students sit in 5 pods of four and two students
sit toward the back. When we work in groups those two students join one of the other pods. This class
is very talkative and likes to move around a lot. The math class is controlled with an assertive
discipline style. This style seems to keep them in check for the most part and
A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (15 minutes)
 Xtra Math (10 - 15 minutes) – completed individually on the computers.
 “Good morning class! After you have completed your xtra math please copy down and
solve the problem from the board on the note card I am handing out.
 Reflection from prior lesson: “ Looking at the board who can guess what we are
going to work on today? **Call on student to answer** Yes, after yesterday Mr.
Clark and I analyzed the results and decided that we need to cover multiplication
and division more in depth before we move on. Today we are going to work
specifically on multiplication.”
2. Content Delivery (25 minutes)
 “We are going to work in pods to practice multiplication and then we will discuss
as a class. James and Jack please each join a different pod.”
 Hand out multiplication problem to each pod. “Work together with the others in
your pod to solve each problem on your slips. Make sure each of you write down
your work on the note card I gave you so you can explain it to the rest of the class
when we go over them.”
 **Call on one student from each pod and have them tell you the problem their pod
worked on and write it on the board. Have the group explain how they solved their
problem. Ask the class if they agree or disagree and if they have any questions.**
 Repeat the process of solving each problem on the board until you have solved all 5
pods problems.

3. Closure (5-10 minutes)

 “Okay class, today we worked on multiplying 3 and 4 digit numbers with 2 and 3
digit numbers. For homework **student** is going to hand out a worksheet to
practice. There are 9 problems going over what we worked on as a class. You can
used the rest of class time to work on the worksheet. Please have it completed by
class time tomorrow. Be sure to use grid paper to show your work and then copy your
answers over to the master copy.”

 Class discussion
 Exit ticket notecard
 Agree/Disagree with classmates

C. Differentiated Instruction:
