Text Conventions Items that appear on a Screen Display (video screen) are identified in bold text.
Button names are shown in ALL CAPS text.

Cabinet Images Images of the cabinet and related components may be shown in specific colors for illustration
purposes. Components, peripherals, or cabinet parts displayed as a particular color in this
manual may not be the same color in the actual cabinet.
Safety Symbols When required, information is provided in procedures about potential challenges and dangers.
and Information The terms WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTICE are used for specific safety reasons. For

ESD
ESD alerts you to take proper grounding precautions against electrostatic discharge
(ESD) before handling a product.
Properly Secure and Before performing any service tasks, the game (and Top/Accessory Box, if applicable) must be
Vent all Equipment properly secured as described in the Service Manual. All WMS cabinets and associated
equipment (including Top/Accessory Box, controllers, etc.) must be properly installed. Upright
games must be mounted to a stand using four bolts, and all stands must be bolted to the floor,
a wall, or secured back-to-back. Slant games must be installed back-to-back or back against a
wall. WMS Upright (BBU/BB2/BB2e/Blade) and Slant (BBS/BBS-W) cabinets require a
minimum of 6 inches (15 cm) clearance on both sides and at the rear to allow for proper
ventilation. WMS BBxD and GameField xD cabinets may be placed side by side, but require a
minimum of 6 inches (15 cm) clearance at the rear to allow for proper ventilation. Failure to fully
secure and vent games may cause injury and equipment damage.
Properly Ground Avoid electrical shocks by using proper grounding at all times. Do not plug in the gaming device
Gaming Devices until you inspect and verify the outlet. Only connect WMS equipment to grounded, three-wire
outlets. Do not use a cheater plug to defeat the AC Line Cord’s ground pin. Do not cut off the
ground pin. After servicing a gaming device, ensure that the ground wires are secure.

Radio Interference Be aware of the safety notices listed below. Pending approval, some or all of the following may
apply:
FCC Interference Notice. This equipment has been tested and complies with the limits for a
Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits provide reasonable
protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial
environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy. If not
installed and used according to the instruction manual, this equipment may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is
likely to cause harmful interference. The user must correct interference at their expense.
Canadian Interference Notice. This Class A apparatus meets all requirements of the
Canadian Interference-Causing Equipment Regulations.
EU Interference Notice. This Class A digital apparatus meets all requirements of the EURO
(CISPR 22) EMC specifications and safety requirements. This Gaming Device is not intended

supervised to ensure they do not play with this Gaming Device.

Components
Intended Users This game is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced
of Game physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience or knowledge, unless
Cabinet they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the game by a
person responsible for their safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they
do not play with the game.

terminals. The recommended cable length is 36 inches (91.44 cm).

There are two host communication (HOST COMM) ports available for connection to a third
party AC device:
HOST COMM 1 at J24, Figure 1-18 (B), and Figure 1-20.
Each HOST COMM has one connector for RS232 (DB9), Table 1-25. Interface type is configured
via jumpers JP8 and JP10 on the Bulkhead Board respectively.

Table 1-26 lists the manufacturer’s part numbers for the DB9 cable connector hardware used to
interface to the HOST COMM Connectors. The three components of the connector are the Cable
Housing, the Terminal Pins and the metal shell. The recommended cable length is 63 inches
(160.02 cm).

Service Fuses Fuses can be replaced by Service Technicians (Technical Maintenance) personnel; for more
information on role definitions, see Safety: Guidance on Definitions of Roles for Personnel that
Repair, Maintain, and Patronize Gaming Machine on page 1-11.
The Power Supply includes a fuse for Switched Power, Figure 1-22 (A), or Unswitched Power,
Figure 1-22 (B).

The Switched AC Output Fuse, Figure 1-22 (A), provides circuit protection to system AC devices
when the Power Switch is in the ON position. This includes installed display devices, and all
AC-based illumination in the cabinet, with the exception of the service lamp.
The Unswitched AC Output Fuse, Figure 1-22 (B), provides circuit protection to AC devices
when in standby or the ON position. This is primarily used to power Player Tracking systems, the
service lamp, and the service outlet.
The complete procedure for replacing a Blade Fuse can be reviewed at Replace Switched or
Unswitched Fuses on page 3-31. When replacing a fuse, the AC Line Cord from the outlet
MUST be disconnected.

Placement
Moving a Blade The purpose of this section is to present the instructions for properly moving the Blade.
Use a Hand Cart/Hand Truck with Proper Rating
Only use a hand cart/hand truck that is rated for at least 500 lbs (226.8 kg).
Ensure Proper The Blade can be placed flush against other cabinets or walls. The construction of the cabinet
Venting ensures that vents are clear even when the cabinet is installed flush with walls or other
cabinets.

USB Hub Status When the game Power Switch is set to ON, each device connected to the USB Hub will display
LEDs its connection status at the corresponding LEDs that are visible from the front of the cabinet. A
green LED means that the USB device is communicating with the CPU and yellow means that
there is an over-current.
Removing the Player The Player Tracking System can be removed by Attendants (non-technical maintenance) and
Tracking System Service Technicians (Technical Maintenance); for more information on role definitions, see see
Tray Safety: Guidance on Definitions of Roles for Personnel that Repair, Maintain, and Patronize
Gaming Machine on page 1-11.
Complete the following steps to remove the Player Tracking System Tray (01-1201223):
1 Unlock and open the Main Door (see Opening the Main Door on page 1-30).
2 Switch the game OFF at the Power Switch located on the bottom right side of the cabinet
interior.
4 Gently pull the Player Tracking System Tray away from the cabinet and set it aside in a safe
place, Figure 1-56.

3 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, secure the 8-32 Keps nut to the Player Tracking System Tray
to secure the Tray to the Platform, Figure 1-53 (A).
4 Switch the game ON at the Power Switch located on the bottom right side of the cabinet

5 Close the EMI Door.
6 Close and lock the Main Door.

Lock to the Lock Plate with the new hex nut, Figure 2-2 (C).
10 Using a 7/16-inch nut driver or a ratchet with a 7/16-inch socket, secure the new lock nylock
nut above the cam, Figure 2-5 (B).
Belly Door Complete the following procedure to replace the shipping locks on the Belly Door.

24 Connect the appropriate EMU lighting cables to the EMU Board on the Belly Door. These
cables will be labeled as P1 and Master, Figure 2-15 (A).

25 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, secure the cover over the Belly Door locking mechanism
with the two 8-32 Keps nuts removed in step 2, Figure 2-15 (B).

4 Remove and set aside the cam, Figure 2-17 (B), for later use with the new Keyed Lock.
5 Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the retaining clip securing the shipping lock to the
Cashbox Access Door.
6 Turn the lock clockwise and remove the shipping lock.
7 Insert the Keyed lock into the opening from which the shipping lock was removed.
8 Using a ratchet and a deep well 7/8-inch socket, secure the hex nut to the Keyed Lock
mechanism, Figure 2-17 (C).
9 Replace the cam that was removed in step 4, Figure 2-17 (B).
10 Using a ratchet with a 7/16-inch socket or a 7/16-inch nut driver, secure the end of the lock
with the new nylock nut, Figure 2-17 (A).
CPU To ensure that the CPU Assembly shipping lock does not open during transport, a Torsion
Spring keeps the lock from slipping open, Figure 2-18 (A). The Torsion Spring must be
removed when the shipping lock is replaced.

1 Using a 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch flathead screwdriver, punch the perforated cover plate out of
the CPU Assembly Door, Figure 2-19 (A).
2 Using a 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch flathead screwdriver, remove the cam for the lock by bending
the cam until it breaks off, Figure 2-18 (C).
3 Install the second lock according to casino protocol.
Install The procedures in this section provide the information required to install the CPU-NXT3.x
CPU-NXT3.x Enclosure in the Blade.

1 Confirm that the appropriate EPROM version is on the appropriate side of the board. The
"L" notch, Figure 2-20 (C), should line up with the post headers on the board,
Figure 2-21 (A).

2 Use the guide pins to position the Assemblies, Figure 2-21 (B), and lock them into the
socket.
CAUTION
Do not use excessive force when installing the JUR SPI Assembly or BIOS Firmware
Assembly. If it does not install easily, ensure the assembly is positioned properly and the
leads are not bent.
2 Connect the 22-pin end labeled PLS of the Primary DC Power Cable to port P4 of the
Power Supply, Figure 2-22 (B).
3 Connect the 12-pin end labeled CPU of the Primary DC Power Cable to the right side of the
CPU, Figure 2-22 (C).

WARNING
Do not attempt to seat the CPU into the Bulkhead without removing the Logic Door. Doing
so may damage the CPU and/or the Bulkhead.
Before proceeding, ensure the top left back edge of the CPU is fit securely on the
Bulkhead,
2 Push the CPU down at the Bar Code Label. This will cause the Large CPU Cam to turn
clockwise, Figure 2-24 (A).

4 Install the Logic Door on the CPU hinges and turn the lock on the right to close the Logic
Door, Figure 2-26.

NOTE
If the Logic Door detaches, reinstall it by first engaging the left mounting pin and pushing
the Logic Door towards the Main Door hinge to engage the right mounting pin.
6 Connect the Crown LCD Secondary Cable to the Secondary DVI Port located on
CPU-NXT3.x, Figure 2-27 (B). Tighten the thumbscrews at the end of the cable to ensure it
is properly secured.
NOTE
Confirm the Crown LCD Secondary Cable is connected to the correct port. The
Secondary Port is located behind the Primary Port.
7 Connect the LCD Primary Cable to the Primary Port located on CPU-NXT3.x,
Figure 2-27 (C). Tighten the thumbscrews at the end of the cable to ensure it is properly
secured.
NOTE
Confirm the LCD Primary Cable is connected to the correct port. The Primary Port is
located in front of the Secondary Port.
8 Connect the USB Hub Cable to an available USB port located on CPU-NXT3.x,
Figure 2-27 (D).
9 Close the EMI Door.
10 Close and lock the Main Door.
Complete the following steps to connect the Blade to an approved power source:
WARNING
Plugging the game into an improper line voltage source may create a fire and/or electrical
shock hazards. An improper line voltage or frequency can also cause game damage or
malfunctions.
CAUTION
The power strip is the means of disconnection, and should be installed near the
equipment and be easily accessible.

guidelines for choosing an outlet and connecting to the AC Power Source.
2 Verify that the line voltage at the outlet is either 120 VAC or 220-240 VAC, per the rating of
the specific game.
3 Use an outlet tester to check for properly implemented ground, hot and neutral outlet wiring.
Only use a grounded AC outlet. The gaming device a line frequency of 50 to 60 Hz. If the
outlet meets these requirements, proceed to the next step.
4 Open the Main Door.
5 Open the EMI Door.
7 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, remove and save the 8-32 Keps nut securing the AC Power
Switch Cover to the cabinet, Figure 2-29 (B).
8 Carefully separate the AC Power Switch Cover from the Power Supply, Figure 2-30.

9 Connect the female end of the AC Line Cord into the Power Supply outlet, Figure 2-30 (A).
10 Route the male end of the AC Line Cord out through the bottom of the game,
Figure 2-30 (B), and through the game stand.
11 Connect the male end of the AC Line Cord to the tested socket. See Electrical
Environmental/ Safety Details and Requirements on page 1-4 for details on safely and
correctly connecting the AC Line Cord.
13 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, secure the AC Power Switch Cover to the cabinet with the
8-32 Keps nut removed in step 7, Figure 2-29 (B).

Bill Acceptor Three jumpers on the Bulkhead Board control the Bill Acceptor interface option used by the
Jumpers game, Figure 2-35. Three interface options are available: RS-232, TTL, and Current Loop
(C-Loop).

There are two possible jumper positions, which are referenced in Table 2-3 as 1/2 and 2/3.
Figure 2-36 shows sample jumper settings with TTL Selected, Figure 2-36 (A), and RS-232
Selected, Figure 2-36 (B). While the pins are not actually numbered on the board, the
assumption is that in text-legible board orientation, the top pin is 1, and the bottom pin is 3.
Progressive Port Three jumpers on the Bulkhead Board control the type of progressive system and interface
Jumpers used by the game. four interface options are available: RS-232, RS-485, Half Duplex, RS-485
Full Duplex, and Current Loop (C-Loop), Table 2-4:

Host 1 Jumpers The Blade may be configured as a dual host system. Two jumpers control the Host 1

The Administration Menu displays. If the CPU Logic Door is not open, a message displays
to indicate that the Logic Door must be open.
6 Use the scrollbar on the right side of the screen to scroll to the bottom of the list,

7 To activate either the Wager Saver or Hot New Game Attract Behavior features, select
their ENABLED/DISABLED fields until they read ENABLED, Figure 2-50 (A).

as most operators configure either single denominations or a range of similar denominations.
The denomination restriction ins required to address the potential for multiple progressive wins
with a single spin. Since the strike price for the progressive is scaled based on the lowest

possible that a player may win an excessive number of progressives on a single spin without the

Game Cleaning Cleaning the game exterior should be performed every day and the peripherals should be
inspected and maintained at increments listed by the manufacturer. See the Vendor Materials
section of this manual for the appropriate manufacturer’s documentation for details concerning
each component. This section provides only basic cleaning information.
ESD
Observe all appropriate safety and ESD precautions listed in Preventing ESD on page 1-4.
CAUTION
This game must not be cleaned by a water jet, and is not suitable for installation in an area
where a water jet is used.
Cleaning Game Use a small vacuum cleaner to clean hard-to-reach and narrow places in the cabinet. Then,
Cabinet use a non-ammonia, non-alcohol cleaning solution to clean the game exterior. Never spray the
solution directly onto the game. Instead, spray a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe the game exterior.
Cleaning LCDs A 50/50 mixture of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol is acceptable to use on the LCD. Never
spray liquid directly onto the LCD. Spray liquid onto a non-abrasive, soft cotton cloth and wipe
the LCD. Never use materials such as paper towels, which can cause scratches and damage
the LCD.
CAUTION
The following cleaners should NOT be used on the LCD as they can cause damage to the
touch screen:
Cleaning Bill This Bill Acceptor should be cleaned with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened in a
Acceptor mild detergent to clean the optical sensor lenses and magnetic heads.
Cleaning Printer Use a soft brush or a lint-free cloth lightly moistened in a mild detergent to clean the ticket path.
Preventative WMS recommends that casino personnel create a preventative maintenance schedule using
Maintenance the Game Information Table, Table 3-3, and Preventative Maintenance Checklist, Table 3-4.

11 On the new Main LCD, use an 11/32-inch nut driver to install the upper and lower LCD
brackets and secure them with the eight 8-32 Keps nuts removed in step 10, Figure 3-6 (B).
12 On the new Main LCD, install the cable blockers removed in step 9 and secure them with
the thumbscrews removed in step 9, Figure 3-6 (A). Do not fully tighten the thumbscrews
securing the cable blockers.

8-32 Keps nuts removed in step 4, Figure 3-34 (A).
10 Connect the cables connected to the EMU Controller Board.
11 Install the CPU into the cabinet with the following steps:

b Push the CPU down. This will cause the Large CPU Cam to turn clockwise,

c Pivot the CPU Lever clockwise, Figure 3-36 (A). This will lock the Large CPU Cam into

Figure 3-67 (A). The washers must be installed between the locking mechanism and front
stamping.
8 Connect all appropriate cables to the new Emotive Lighting Board.
9 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, secure the Light Cover to the top of the Belly Door with the

5 Follow the 8-pin Emotive Lighting Cable connected to the Crown Emotive Lighting
Assembly down to the EMU Controller in the cabinet. Disconnect the cable from the EMU
Controller and route the cable up the cabinet cable channel, and up through the Accessory
Box.
6 Determine the following:

While removing the Crown Assembly, ensure that the Emotive Lighting Cable does not get
caught in any cabinet components.
8 Place the Crown Assembly with the LCD facing down on a flat, non-abrasive surface.
9 Disconnect all cables connected within the Crown Assembly.
10 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, remove and save the top two 8-32 nuts securing the Top

11 Raise the Crown Assembly over the Accessory Box and align the mounting studs on the
Crown Assembly with the slotted holes on the Mounting Bracket on the Accessory Box,
Figure 3-69.
12 Slide the Crown Assembly forward so that the mounting studs engage the slots on the
Mounting Bracket.
13 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, secure the Crown Assembly to the Accessory Box with the
three nuts removed in step 4, Figure 3-69.
14 Route the Crown Emotive Lighting Cable through the left rear side of the cabinet and
connect it to the Emotive Lighting Controller.
15 Connect the Crown LCD Power and VGA cables to the LCD.
16 Close the Crown.

9 Remove the EMU Light Board from the Front Bezel Assembly.
10 Install the new EMU Light Board in the position from which the old EMU Light Board was
removed.
11 Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, secure the top or bottom EMU Light Board to the Front
Bezel Assembly with the three 6-32 screws removed in step 8, Figure 3-95 (A).
13 Connect the EMU cables removed step 4 to the top and bottom 10-pin connectors in the
EMU Light Boards on the Front Bezel Assembly, Figure 3-96 (B).
14 Mount the Front Bezel Assembly to the Marquee Assembly, Figure 3-96.

11 Remove the Light Board Assembly from the Marquee and set it aside on a flat,
non-abrasive surface, Figure 3-101.

14 Using an 11/32-inch nut driver, remove and save the 8-32 Keps nut securing the Tower
Light ground braid to the Marquee Mounting Bracket, Figure 3-102 (B).
15 Unlock and open the Main Door.
16 Open the Crown.
17 Disconnect the 6-pin Tower Light Power Cable from the connector in the Accessory Box,
Figure 3-103 (A).

step 13, Figure 3-106 (A).

Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to serve as a reference for basic troubleshooting of the Blade
cabinet.
For tilt codes, tower light codes, and all diagnostic procedures, reference the Troubleshooting
chapter of the Service Manual 16-020832: CPU-NXT, CPU-NXT2, CPU-NXT3 Operating
System (OS).
Preventing Depending on the procedure, measures must be taken to prevent electrical shock and/or
Injury and electrostatic discharge (ESD) when servicing the game.

The game is plugged in and the Main LCD 1 Verify the DVI Cable connection from the CPU to the primary LCD, or,
is blacked out. depending on the theme, check the VGA to DVI Cable connection
from the CPU to the LCD.
2 Verify the Power Cable is connected to the LCD and either B or C on
the Right Cable Channel (for a standard LCD).
3 Check the LCD fuse (for Video only).
4 Reseat the CPU.
5 Replace the DVI cable, or depending on the theme, replace the VGA
to DVI Cable connection from the CPU to the LCD.
6 Replace the LCD Power Cable.
7 Replace the blacked out LCD. Verify that the LED indicators are
ON/OFF first and if video and power are applied.
8 Replace the CPU.
9 Replace the Power Supply.
10 Confirm that the EXT CPU module is receiving power and the CPU
Fan is spinning.
11 Confirm that the BIOS Firmware Hub is properly installed.
12 Confirm that the SPI Chip is properly installed.
13 Replace the Bulkhead Board.
