Competency 001

The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development, articulation,
implementation and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school
community.

 How you addressed each competency? I would create a committee that involves all
stakeholders that including the following ideas: create a campus vision (mission statement)
based on students’ achievement data, demographics, campus climate needs and
staff/community surveys.
 What you learned about each competency? I learned that competency one is about setting
expectations for your campus, creating a positive campus culture, and being able to effectively
communicate internally and externally. All stakeholders (staff, students, community leaders,
principal and parents) must be involved.
 What you still have to learn? I need to learn how to align all necessary functions; financial,
human and material resources to support campus vision. Houston ISD has a complex budget
system that I will have to learn to successfully fund all areas of my vision. Shaping the school
culture can be very challenging if you are at a challenging school, however, with my experience
that will be a task that I’ll constantly work towards through coaching and relationship building.

Competency 002

The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the school community,
respond to diverse interests and need and mobilize resources to promote student success.

 How you addressed each competency? I would address diverse interests and needs. But most
importantly I would apply the necessary skills for building consensus and managing conflicts.
 What you learned about each competency? I learned that competency two focuses on the role
of communication and collaboration with all members of the school community.
 What you still have to learn? I would need a couple of trainings on managing conflicts. I will have
to remind myself that change is a necessary part of the improvement process.

Competency 003

The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness and in an ethical and legal manner.

 How you addressed each competency? I would always use the ethical standards as a blue print
to assist with shaping the campus culture and making sure all student’s learning needs are being
met properly. Also, to serve as an advocate for all children.

 What you learned about each competency? I learned that this competency is about being fair
and reasonable in all situations. You must apply legal guidelines to protect the rights of all
students.

 What you still have to learn? Making sure I am aware of new and updated laws. For example,
Sped Educations laws.

Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and strategic plans that
enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, resources and assessment;
and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student performance.

 How you addressed each competency? I would address the facilitation of curriculum, instruction
and effective staff development needs.

 What you learned about each competency? The principal role in competency four includes
ensuring curriculum (what is taught) and instructions ( how it taught) are delivery properly. As
a principal your responsible for promoting and ensuring everyone involve is align with school
vision.

 What you still have to learn? My experience in education as teacher has successfully prepared
me for this competency. During my tenure as a teacher I was able to fully understand the scope
and sequences of curriculum on various subjects and levels for example, elementary and
secondary

Competency 005

The principal knows how to advocate, nurture and sustain an instructional program and a campus
culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

How you addressed each competency? I would ensure that each student have multiple
research-based opportunities to learn and be successful, by

 What you learned about each competency? I learned that formative and summative assessment
data must be used to facilitate informed decision making. I must always keep in mind as an
instructional leader and as a teacher of heart that advocacy must always be on the forefront of
my mind.

 What you still have to learn? I must continue to learn about diverse sociological, linguistic and
cultural factors that impact learning. There is always room to grow and unique situations arise
when nurturing different students.

Competency 006

The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to improve the
performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models for supervision and staff
development and apply the legal requirements for personnel management.

 How you addressed each competency? I will focus on staff evaluation and development
activities on helping achieve his or her goals. Principal are like stewardship of the vision that
they are responsibly for.

 What you learned about each competency? Principal cannot isolate themselves in their offices.
Principals are responsible for ensuring that their staff is motivated, appreciated and understands
your goals as a leader. I also learned how to do teacher appraisal and staff evaluations. I had the
opportunity at my previous school to do a walkthrough of a teacher and had a 15-minute
conference about the observation. I was able to use what I learned at St. Thomas from my
professors to develop, implement and deliver a successful walkthrough.

 What you still have to learn? I must know and apply the legal requirements for personal
management. I also need to learn a new system that will be implemented for teacher appraisals.
I plan on attending a workshop for the new teacher appraisal system this summer.

Competency 007

The principal knows how to apply organization, decision making and problem-solving skills to ensure an
effective learning environment.

 How you addressed each competency? I will ensure that collaboration is consistent throughout
every content and grade level.

 What you learned about each competency? I learned that you must create a system that
evaluate, modify and improve everything. Accountability is essential in the growth of the
school. Team is the thing for this competency. For me as an upcoming leader my biggest
concern would be leading as an example.

 What you still have to learn? I have to always surround myself with expert mentors who
continually evolve. Furthermore, I will always research different methods on collaboration and
working together as a team with the school stakeholders.

Competency 008

The principal knows how to apple principles of effective leadership and management in relation to
campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management and technology use.

 How you addressed each competency? Budgets would be developed collaboratively while using
legal regulations and school policies. I understand the importance of working with stakeholders
about the campus budget.

 What you learned about each competency? Never misappropriate funds!

 What you still have to learn? How to implement the use of technology and information system
to into school management.

Competency 009

The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management the campus physical plant
and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.

 How you addressed each competency? By creating a safety and crisis management plan.

 What you learned about each competency? Safety above everything! Stay calm and legal. Don’t
be afraid to ask for help.

 What you still have to learn? I need to learn how to incorporate my maintenance staff with my
regular staff to make sure there is an equal playing field as all jobs are important.
