PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW

In you, Father all-mighty, we have our preservation and our bliss. In you,
Christ, we have our restoring and our saving. You are our mother, brother,
and savior. In you, our Lord the Holy Spirit, is marvelous and plenteous
grace. You are our clothing: for love you wrap us and embrace us. You are
our maker, our lover, our keeper. Teach us to believe that by your grace
all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be

Let us pray. Eternal and all-merciful God, with all the angels and all the

A MESSAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

FIRST READING: Acts 9:1-6 [7-20]

Each of us has a story of meeting God’s grace. Saul (later called Paul) was
an ardent persecutor of all who followed the Way of Christ. This reading
recounts the story of his transformation, beginning with an encounter with Psalm 30
Jesus Christ on the way to Damascus.
1 Refrain:
Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord,
went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues at
Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or
women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3Now as he was going
along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed
around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul,
Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The
reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But get up and enter
the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” [7The men who were
traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw Tone:
no one. 8Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he
could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into
Damascus. 9For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

SECOND READING: Revelation 5:11-14
The vision of John recorded in Revelation offers a glimpse of cosmic
worship on the Lord’s Day. At its center is “the Lamb who was slain.”

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the
throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of
myriads and thousands of thousands, 12singing with full voice,
“Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth

GOSPEL: John 21:1-19
As the Gospel is announced, worshippers are invited to trace a cross upon
their forehead, then over their lips, and then over their hearts, silently
praying, “May the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ be ever on my mind, on
my lips, and in my heart.”

Glory to you, O Lord.
The risen Christ appears again to his disciples by the sea where they were
first called. After echoes of the fishing and feeding miracles, he gives a
final reminder of the cost of a disciple’s love and obedience.

After [he appeared to his followers in Jerusalem,] Jesus showed himself
again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this
way. 2Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin,
Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his
disciples. 3Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to
him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that
night they caught nothing.

Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not
know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish,
have you?” They answered him, “No.” 6He said to them, “Cast the net to
the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now
they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7That
disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon
Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked,
and jumped into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging
the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a
hundred yards off.

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on
it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have
just caught.” 11So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full
of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many,
the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now
none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew
it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and
did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus
appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon
son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord;
you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16A second
time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him,
“Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my
sheep.” 17He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love
me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love
me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I
love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when
you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever
you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and
someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not
wish to go.” 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would
glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

As they recite the creed, worshippers are invited to bow beginning with the

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God
from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he
came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
Trusting God’s promise of new life, we pray for the renewal of the church,
the world, and all of creation.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We
have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have
done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us,
renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in
your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.
In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for
his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of
the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the

Let us pray.
Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower
us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad

and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need,
Worshippers are invited to bow with the consecration of the Lord’s body

DIALOGUE
You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and
great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave

for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave

Lutherans believe, teach and confess that we receive the true Body and
Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. If you desire to pick up the cross and
live in Christ, we hope you will receive with us. Even if you do not feel

table. Simply hold your hands over your heart and the pastor will give you
a blessing. Pastor will be glad to discuss Holy Communion and Holy

LAMB OF GOD
Remembering, therefore, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, along
with his promise to return, we give thanks to you, O God, and we ask you
to send us your Holy Spirit through the Body and Blood of Christ. Equip
us, through word and sacrament, to live as the people of your mission, so
that all the world may see and believe that Christ Jesus lives.

Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor

When she was about thirty years old, Julian (or Juliana) reported visions
that she later compiled into a book, Sixteen Revelations of Divine Love,
now a classic of medieval mysticism. The visions declared that love was
the meaning of religious experience, provided by Christ who is love, for the
purpose of love.

Also known as Victor Maurus, this native of the northwest African nation
of Mauritania was a soldier in the Roman Praetorian Guard. Under the
persecution of Maximian, Victor died for his faith at Milan.
Nicolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, renewer of the church, hymnwriter,
died 1760
Thursday, May 9, 2019
When he was 22, a group of Moravians asked permission to live on
Zinzendorf's land. He agreed, and eventually worldwide Moravian missions
emanated from this community. Zinzendorf participated in these missions,
and is also remembered for writing hymns characteristic of his Pietistic
faith.
