Lesson Idea Name: Narrative

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 5th
Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE5W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
■ a. Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize
an event sequence that unfolds naturally.
■ b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and
events or show the responses of characters to situations.
■ c. Use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence of events.
■ d. Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
■ e. Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Digital Citizen:
Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an
interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: I would have students look up narratives on this website where students can comment on others
writing pieces as well as upload their own. I would have students look on and know the qualities of a narrative
writing piece. Students can then comment if they wish on a writing piece and use the same prompt that they
read about. It could be something about their lifetime, a fictional narrative on a prompt of their choosing. By
doing this, students will be more inclined to be engaged on the topic they are writing about and have more
fun by doing so. In this case also, you don’t have to worry about it being a personal experience that another
student doesn’t have because it can be about whatever they want.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
A computer or tablet or something that has internet access would be needed to implement this. Students
would need to be able to read other’s article as well as be able to upload their own when they are finished.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students are able to comment on others posts online about their writing. As well as when they
are done, they would be posting their own for others to be able to comment on theirs.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students would be writing a narrative based on a
prompt they have seen on KidPub. They would be producing and uploading original work to this
website.
c. Higher-order thinking: I am sure that most of the writing pieces do not include a prompt so after
reading the stories from other students, my students would need to think of a prompt that would align
with their piece. I think this could be challenging based on the fact that they would be looking at
narratives and then go on with the prompt they decide.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: When
posting to this website, others can comment on their writing. Students who are looking at other’s
writing will want to view their products.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Students will be able to view the website in different languages if
needed. The student will be able to pick a writing piece that they understand to read so no other students are
questioning why they are reading the same as them. Since this will be individual they have the freedom to
work at their own pace and find out the purpose of the other student’s paper.
Engagement: I think students would be so excited about this since they are basically getting to choose what
they want to write about. I remember being in school and hating prompts because most of the time I couldn’t
think of what to write. With this activity, students will basically get to choose what they want based off of
another writing piece.
Action and Expression: Students will be more engaged due to being able to pick their topic. I think this will
make the writing come more naturally since it will be based on a topic of their choosing.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: Students would not be posting their names while
posting so I wouldn’t need to worry about their name being out there. The only thing on the website would
be their writing and the name of the writing so others would have no way to know who they are/where they
live. I would remind students prior about how it is important not to put your name on the internet or give any
details to where you live.
Reflective Practice: I think this would impact student learning in a way where students would be excited
about writing, excited to see who commented on their pieces and be able to chat with others about their
pieces. I think students would be more engaged due to them picking their own prompt while still fitting in the
narrative standards.
