Lesson Idea Name: Fossilized, how??

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd grade
Content Standard Addressed: S3E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information on how fossils provide
evidence of past organisms. b. Develop a model to describe the sequence and conditions required for an
organism to become fossilized

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be given the choice to decide who they want to work in groups with, they will also
have a choice in deciding which organism to fossil process they want to create their video on. This activity was
designed so that students learning outcomes are authentic, the students will also be communicating to real
audiences (peers, teacher, parents, etc.) through their videos.
Representation: The rubric provided for students will be written in student friendly language and it will also
include visuals to make each category of the rubric. The teacher will explain instructions to students but also
provide them with a print out of the directions as well.
Action and Expression: Students will share their thoughts and ideas about the fossilization process using tools
(iMovie) to create their videos and reach the learning goal.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students have already learned about fossils and the process it takes for an organism to become fossilized. The
project will be introduced at the end of the chapter for the S3E2.B standard. This project is very similar to a
performance task and will be used as a summative assessment. Students will be asked to work in groups of 3
to create a video using iMovie. The iMovie should teach others how an organism becomes fossilized.

The teacher will allow the students a week to finish their video creations. Students’ creations will be shown to
the class and also published on the classroom blog site. The class will get a chance to vote on their two
favorite videos and those videos be published on YouTube. Students will be provided with a rubric that will
list the different needed components and the teacher will use this rubric to provide feedback to the groups.
Importance of technology:
The use of the multimedia authoring tool (iMovie) is essential to this project. Students will need this tool to
create their fossilized videos. Without this tool they will not be able to make a physical video. The project

could be completed without this particular tool, but it would need to be replaced with a similar tool in order
to create the videos. If this tool was not available for students to use, the teacher could instead have students
act out their video in front of the class instead of creating a video. If students had to act out their video, they
would not be able to look back at the performance or publish on the classroom’s blog site.
Inspiration (optional): N/A
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
During the creation of the video students can run into copyright issues when pulling pictures or snippets of
videos off the internet. To limit this the teacher should give students websites where they can freely use any
pictures, videos, or text from. Discovery Education is a great site that allows the use of videos and pictures,
without the hassle of copyright issues. If students use Discovery Education they may need to create an
account first. Teachers can provide students with their classroom login to use while working on the video in
class, or teachers will have to get permission from parents that allow students to create an account with
Discovery Education.
Reflective Practice:
I think this is nice activity for students to complete. It allows them to get away from pen and paper
assessments. They are also able to work with other students, which may make the process more entertaining.
Since this lesson idea is fit to come after students have learned the standard, the teacher can bring in a local
paleontologist to talk with the class about fossils and even show them what actual fossils look and feel like.
