Lesson Idea Name: Math Kahoot!

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed: Extend the counting sequence. MGSE1.NBT.1 Count to 120, starting at any
number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a
written numeral.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will use their prior knowledge to compete with their classmates about mathematics
within 120. Students will have choice to work from the desktop, laptops or tablets based on their own
preference. It is setup in a competition style so the students will have high engagement to have a better score
then their peers. Kahoot! is always a fun activity to add to your classroom for student engagement.
Representation: I will read the questions out loud to the students due to the timer and some of the words are
higher than a first grade reading level and I do not want the students to just see a number and pick what is
the closest to that number. The students get to interact with their chosen technology individually for this
lesson and in charge of picking their own answers.
Action and Expression: Students will participate in the Kahoot! game to show me their knowledge on the
material. They get to interact with the game on their chosen technology device and take a non-pressurized
quiz to put their knowledge to the test.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
The students will have previously learned the terms ‘more than’ and ‘less than’ and knowledge of numbers
between 0-120 as the standard states. The Kahoot! game will be used after the material is taught to see how
the students would do during a unit test and what needs to be retaught to the students.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The activity is quick for me to really just see where the students are at in their understanding and to address
misconceptions but it is fun for the students instead worksheets. The students will be picking the best fit
answer to the questions on their chosen technology tool while I analyze the data and move them on to the
next question and read it out loud to them.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? Kahoot! draws students attention because it is competitive and always has a class winner.
For that to work, there has to be a correct answer and the answer needs to be displayed for the students to
see if they got it right. Who got it wrong will not be displayed. Kahoot! only shows the scores, and now who
answered right or wrong so it will still remain anonymous.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the Kahoot! game the students will move into a new subject so I have time to assess the results
properly. I want to make sure that I am able reach each students weakness so they are all able to become
masters of the material.

How will the data be used?

I will analyze the results so I can reteach the material that my students showed misunderstandings with and
this will also allow me to setup my students into proper center rotations with students who show similarities
so I can differentiate the material to their abilities. I will place my students in groups that have similarities so
when they rotate to the teacher lead table, I can address and reteach their misconceptions in a small group
setting.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I hope that my students have fun while showing how brilliant they all are. I hope they cheer each other on
and are proud of the winner of the game. I hope that the students handle the game well so that I can
continue to give the students fun activities like Kahoot!

Reflective Practice:
I think the students will have a fun time putting their knowledge to the test in this competitive assessment. I
would like to add more complex questions to the mix as I see them grow in the knowledge of this standard. 1st

grade is such a large year of math for the students and it is so foundational so it is important to make sure
that your students are left with a full understanding. The quick quiz could be given on different response tools
but I find Kahoot! to be a class favorite, especially with the younger kids because it is so simple for them to
use.
