1 Introduction

1.1 Revision History

Document Version Date of issue Author Description
0.1 09/2004 UF Initial Version
0.7 12/2005 UF Buffer Size Description Changed
0.8 12/2005 UF

1.2 Audience
This document is indented for hospital staff, health system integrators, software designers or implementers. The
reader of this document is concerned with software design and/or system integration issues. It is assumed that the
reader of this document is familiar with the DICOM Standard and with the terminology and concepts that are
used in that Standard.

If readers are unfamiliar with DICOM terminology they should first refer to the GE document listed below, then
read the DICOM Standard itself, prior to reading this DICOM Conformance Statement document.

1.3 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

It is the intent of this document, in conjunction with the GE document, Introduction to the Integrated
DICOM/Network v3.0 (ID/Net v3.0) Conformance Statement, Direction: 2118780, to provide an unambiguous
specification for GE implementations. This specification, called a Conformance Statement, includes a DICOM
Conformance Statement and is necessary to ensure proper processing and interpretation of GE medical data
exchanged using DICOM. The GE Conformance Statements are available to the public.

The reader of this DICOM Conformance Statement should be aware that different GE devices are capable of
using different Information Object Definitions. For example, a GE CT Scanner may send images using the CT
Information Object, MR Information Object, Secondary Capture Object, etc.

Included in this DICOM Conformance Statement are the Module Definitions, which define all data elements,
used by this GE implementation. If the user encounters unspecified private data elements while parsing a GE
Data Set, the user is well advised to ignore those data elements (per the DICOM standard). Unspecified private
data element information is subject to change without notice. If, however, the device is acting as a "full fidelity
storage device", it should retain and re-transmit all of the private data elements which are sent by GE devices.

1.4 IMPORTANT REMARKS

The use of these DICOM Conformance Statements, in conjunction with the DICOM Standards, is intended to
facilitate communication with GE imaging equipment. However, by itself, it is not sufficient to ensure that
inter-operation will be successful. The user (or user's agent) needs to proceed with caution and address at
least four issues:

• Integration - The integration of any device into an overall system of interconnected devices goes beyond
the scope of standards (DICOM), and of this introduction and associated DICOM Conformance Statements
when interoperability with non-GE equipment is desired. The responsibility to analyze the applications
requirements and to design a solution that integrates GE imaging equipment with non–GE systems is the
user's responsibility and should not be underestimated. The user is strongly advised to ensure that such an
GE Medical Systems DICOM CONFORMANCE GE OEC Fluorostar Systems
STATEMENT Page 7 of 34

integration analysis is correctly performed.

• Validation - Testing the complete range of possible interactions between any GE device and non–GE
devices, before the connection is declared operational, should not be overlooked. Therefore, the user should
ensure that any non–GE provider accepts full responsibility for all validation required for their connection
with GE devices. This includes the accuracy of the image data once it has crossed the interface between the
GE imaging equipment and the non–GE device and the stability of the image data for the intended
applications. Such a validation is required before any clinical use (diagnosis and/or treatment) is performed.
It applies when images acquired on GE imaging equipment are processed/displayed on a non-GE device, as
well as when images acquired on non-GE equipment is processed/displayed on a GE console or workstation.

• Future Evolution – GE understands that the DICOM Standard will evolve to meet the user's growing
requirements. GE is actively involved in the development of the DICOM Standards. DICOM will
incorporate new features and technologies and GE may follow the evolution of the Standard. The GE
protocol is based on DICOM as specified in each DICOM Conformance Statement. Evolution of the
Standard may require changes to devices which have implemented DICOM. In addition, GE reserves the
right to discontinue or make changes to the support of communications features, on its products, as
described by these DICOM Conformance Statements. The user should ensure that any non–GE provider,
which connects with GE devices, also plans for the future evolution of the DICOM Standards. Failure to do
so will likely result in the loss of function and/or connectivity as the DICOM Standards change and GE
products are enhanced to support these changes.

• Interaction - It is the sole responsibility of the non–GE provider to ensure that communication with the
interfaced equipment does not cause degradation of GE imaging equipment performance and/or function.

2 NETWORKING

2.1 IMPLEMENTATION MODEL

Fluorostar is implemented in one Application entity.

2.1.1 Application Data Flow

FLUOROSTAR initiates the association to remote PACS. When the association is established, FLUOROSTAR
may request the storing of an image or request to receive patient data or to print images to the remote
Application Entity.

2.1.2 Functional Definitions of the FLUOROSTAR AE

FLUOROSTAR supports the export of all images generated with FLUOROSTAR via a DICOM online
communication.

If an image export request is made, FLUOROSTAR sends an association request to the destination
AE. If an association has been established successfully, FLUOROSTAR translates the image and
image related data into a DICOM message and sends it. After the images have been sent
FLUOROSTAR closes the association. If the association cannot be opened, the related export attempt
is cancelled.

Worklist requests are not done periodically by FLUOROSTAR. For each worklist request,
FLUOROSTAR sends an association request to the destination AE. If an association has been
established successfully, FLUOROSTAR queries the worklist data. After the requested worklist data
have been received, FLUOROSTAR closes the association. If the association cannot be opened, the
related worklist request attempt is cancelled.

FLUOROSTAR supports the manual image export.

If an image should be stored on a PACS, FLUOROSTAR makes a C-STORE request to the

destination AE. If the association cannot be opened, the export is cancelled.
If an association has been established successfully, FLUOROSTAR translates the image and image
related data into a DICOM message and sends it.

2.2.1.3.1.2 Proposed Presentation Contexts

FLUOROSTAR is capable of proposing the presentation contexts shown below.

2.3.2 Additional Protocols

Where host names rather than IP addresses are used in the configuration properties to specify
presentation addresses for remote AE’s, the application is dependent on the name resolution
mechanism of the underlying operating system.

2.3.3 SUPPORT OF CHARACTER SETS

FLUOROSTAR supports the character set “ISO 8859 Latin 1 (ISO-IR 100)”.

2.4 Configuration

2.4.1 AE Connection Parameter

FLUOROSTAR can use different AE titles for different connections. Following AE Titles and communication
Parameters can be administered using the FLUOROSTAR-DICOM-Setup.

2.4.1.1 Local Application Title

A different AE Title has to be administered for each FLUOROSTAR workstation. This setting can be changed in
FLUOROSTAR DICOM-Setup.

2.4.1.2 Remote Application Title

AE Title of the service class provider. A special AE Title (different from the FLUOROSTAR workstations) has
to be set to communicate with this provider. This setting can also be changed in FLUOROSTAR DICOM-Setup.

2.4.1.3 Host Name

I/P-Address (format: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn where 0<= nnn <=255)
If a Domain Name Server is active you can use the domain name instead of the ip address!

2.4.1.4 Port Number

Enter the port which is defined at the provider for the required service. The default port reserved for NEMA
applications is 104

You can configure up to 10 servers for each of the DICOM Services PRINT and STORE.
You can configure 1 server for the DICOM Service WORKLIST.

The Server Parameters can be edited by FLUOROSTAR and are stored inside the device dependent
configuration files.

You can add an TIMEOUT-Parameter to define a special timeout for each defined server.

FLUOROSTAR never acts as a SCP! For all dicom services supported by FLUOROSTAR, it is a
SCU!

Message Content can be changed in different ways:

• (CV) Configuration Value :

Add or edit the Default-Ini Files for each Service
You can enable and disable the transfer of tag codes and you can edit, add or delete constant
message contents of tags. The default files are device independent for all devices which read this
service.
Sample: default_worklist.wkl
Be sure that your changes are necessary and correct, before you change the default files!
Normally you should change only the device specific configuration files.
You can generate a device specific configuration file. The defined tag codes overwrites the tag
codes of the default configuration file. The name of the configuration file must be identically to it’s
alias name and is exclusive designed for this device:
Sample: Alias = KodakPrinter Configuration file name = KodakPrinter.prn

• (SC) Software Controlled
Some of the Values are generated by the Software and can not be changed. The Software
overwrites all values defined in the default and device specific configuration files.

• (UD) User Defined

The content of these tags can be defined by the user at runtime via the dialog screens.

3.4 DICOM Worklist Service

WORKLIST Presentation Context
Abstract Syntax
Name Modality Worklist Information Model – FIND
UID 1.2.840.10008.5.1.4.31

3.4.1 General Worklist Features

FLUOROSTAR is able to get Worklist information from one Worklist provider.

3.4.2 Limitations of Worklist Service

There is no automatic Worklist transfer from the Service Class Provider to FLUOROSTAR. This means worklist
must be requested manually by the user.
GE Medical Systems DICOM CONFORMANCE GE OEC Fluorostar Systems
STATEMENT Page 22 of 34

For this version FLUOROSTAR can define filter except date, station name and physicians name for the Worklist
results only via the initialization files.

3.4.3 Description and Sequencing of Activities

FLUOROSTAR can be configured to request Worklist information from one Worklist server.

The AE’s, for which FLUOROSTAR should request worklist, can be configured. FLUOROSTAR does not
periodically queries the system acting as worklist server for worklists.

The worklist results are written to a result file and can be displayed to select patients from the worklist.

Filename of the default Worklist Context Table: default_worklist.wkl

Filename of the Worklist Result File: worklist.result

It is not possible to cancel the query process.

FLUOROSTAR does not limit the number of processed worklist responses. If worklist query fails in error
information is written into a log file.

3.4.4 SOP Specific Conformance

The table below provides a description of the FLUOROSTAR worklist identifier. Only a subset is used.
The table shows all possible Tag-Codes for this Service. The default configuration activates only a subset.

5 Security
FLUOROSTAR does not support any specific security measures.

It is assumed that FLUOROSTAR is used within a secured environment. It is assumed that a secured environment
includes at a minimum:
• Firewall or router protections to ensure that only approved external hosts have network access to
FLUOROSTAR.

• Firewall or router protections to ensure that FLUOROSTAR only has network access to approved external
hosts.

• Any communication with external hosts and services outside the locally secured environment use
appropriate secure network channels (e.g. such as a Virtual Private Network (VPN)).

Other network security procedures such as automated intrusion detection may be appropriate in some
environments. Additional security features may be established by the local security policy and are beyond the
scope of this conformance statement.
