Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: For engagement, students will be using a Nearpod presentation to create and analyze products
about the Civil Rights movement in this assignment.
Representation: For representation, there will be usage of both low and high tech tools that will engage
student learning as well as make it more interactive.
Action and Expression: They will be able to collaborate in discussion with their classmates and use matching
games to show their knowledge. As well as fill in the blanks and listening to an audio version of MLK’s speech
to differentiate.

Lesson idea implementation:

This lesson is a flipped classroom lesson that would be used for a snow day. It is a Nearpod presentation that I
created that starts a unit on the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia. In order to complete it, students will have
to do each activity which includes a reflection (that will be continued in class), watch a Brain Pop video, and
do matching/fill in the blank activities. This uses visual, auditory and interactive aspects of Nearpod to engage
students and prepare them for the rest of the unit and class discussion. They will be assessed on the
completion of the activities and will continue with the topics when they return to class after this flipped
classroom assignment. They will receive feedback in class after they’ve completed it, and it will serve as a
formative assessment so that I can see what needs to be focused on vs. what they don’t understand as well.
Importance of technology:
Creating a website in which students can access and complete a flipped classroom assignment is vital to this
lesson because it serves as a home-base for clarification and instructions. Students will be able to complete
this assignment on their own time and come in prepared to discuss and participate in class. Without the use
of a class blog, this lesson would just be a singular Nearpod presentation – the blog provides agendas,
instructions, among other thing. The project could be complete if it was printed or provided in a different
medium but, it would lose the engagement and interactivity.
Inspiration (optional): This inspiration for this was found within Nearpod – I was new to this site and I found
some really cool activities within their presentation maker that I used to create this lesson.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
As far as internet safety, security, and privacy, there is an entire section of the blog dedicated to the school
districts rules and regulations in regards to internet safety. As well as very important forms that both parents
and students must fill out in order to participate in any form of online collaboration within the classroom,
including a parent permission form, a name and photo form, and student work permission. All of those forms
can be found on the class blog. Another way to advocate for internet safety is hosting a workshop that would
introduce internet safety and privacy to parents, students and administrators.
Reflective Practice:
I really feel as if this lesson would be perfect for flipped classroom because they will be able to engage and
interact with the material at home and be prepared to further explore it in class. I would extend this lesson
through the use of more technology tools so that it will increases students understanding of the technology
that they have access through, as well as using formative assessment to gauge their understanding of the
content in regards to the standard.
