Los Adverbios de Modo

El adverbio nos sirve para describir cómo se realiza una acción. En español añadimos la
terminación –mente. En inglés empezaremos estudiando los adverbios de modo para tener un
primer acercamiento a los adverbios. Más adelante veremos la clasificación de los adverbios con
más detalle.

Formamos los adverbios de modo a partir de los adjetivos:

1. Añadimos al adjetivo la terminación –ly:

slow slowly
lento despacio

quick quickly
rápido deprisa

beautiful beautifully
hermoso bellamente

Michael paints beautifully.

Michael pinta bellamente.

I don't drive very quickly.

Yo no manejo muy rápidamente.

She cooks badly.

Ella cocina mal.

Sarah studies her lessons

carefully.
Sarah estudia sus lecciones
cuidadosamente.

Mary always walks slowly.

Mary siempre anda despacio.

2. Si el adjetivo termina en –y, cambiamos esta letra por –ily:

happy happily
feliz felizmente
noisy noisily
ruidoso ruidosamente; con ruido

tidy tidily
ordenado ordenadamente

Miranda plays the guitar

noisily.
Miranda toca la guitarra
ruidosamente.

She always dresses prettily.

Ella siempre se viste bellamente.

They live happily together.

Ellos viven felizmente juntos.

I learn easily.
Yo aprendo fácilmente.

Algunas Excepciones

shy shyly
tímido tímidamente

dry dryly
seco secamente

Example:

Karl speaks shyly.

Karl habla tímidamente.
My brother works spryly in the summer.
Mi hermano trabaja activamente en verano.

Your classmates aren't your friends. They always speak wryly.

Tus compañeros de clase no son tus amigos. Ellos siempre hablan irónicamente.

A fox behaves slyly.

Un zorro se comporta con astucia.

You need to cut it dryly.

Tú necesitas cortarlo secamente.

Cuando la –y está precedida de vocal, esta letra se mantiene:

coy coyly
tímido tímidamente

Example:

He never smiles coyly. He is quite nice.

Él nunca sonríe tímidamente. Él es bastante agradable.

Excepciones

gay gaily
alegre alegremente

Example:

There is a party. They are enjoying it gaily.

Hay una fiesta. Ellos la están disfrutando alegremente.

3. Si el adjetivo termina en –e, se cambia por –y:

horrible horriblemente

comfortable comfortably
confortable cómodamente

simple simplemente

true truly

My parents have a big house. They live comfortably.

Mis padres tienen una casa grande. Ellos viven cómodamente.

Life is a wonder. I like to live it simply.

La vida es una maravilla. Me gusta vivirla simplemente.

Truly, I don't agree with you.

Realmente, yo no estoy de acuerdo contigo.

The letter tells the matter horribly.

La carta cuenta el asunto horriblemente.

Añade -ly

Quita la -y, añade -ily (con excepciones)
