Engr. Francis Albert A. Tingson Remarks:

Availability is a function of the mean time between actions and maintenance

down time. The helicopter maintenance is accomplished by the mechanics
that is specialized and well trained in helicopters. Reliability is a function of
an item’s failure rate. To preserve consistent helicopter engine performance,
maintainability is also measured by the item’s mean time to repair.

Survivability is a measure of the item’s ability to withstand a hostile man-

made environment and still be mission-ready. As common helicopter
missions of business purposes, search and rescue, environmental aids and
the likes are a great test of showing how the aircraft can perform at its limits
in all situations. Overall performance is a measure of how well an item
performs it designated mission. The key aspect is to show survival tactics
and operations to protect both the people and the crew of the aircraft. The
principle economic factor is cost, which is the amount required to design,
produce, test, and operate during its life cycle. Given that medium aircraft is
at medium cost of operation, its guarantees higher degree of safety for all
missions and as well as the crews and the people it is tasked to serve and
protect.

Engr. Francis Albert A. Tingson Remarks:

For electrical system, it is supplied by an energy driven alternator means of a

belt and pulley system similar to an automobile. These alternators have
advantages over older style generators as they are lighter in weight, require
lower maintenance, and maintain a uniform electrical output even at low
engine rpm. For the Undercarriage, landing gears are opted due to their
inferiority to the landing skid in this types of applications were heavy
payloads are always carried. The goal of this process is to optimize the
mission effectiveness of the designed helicopter. There are two groups of
factors which determine a helicopter’s mission effectiveness: operational
factors and economic factors.

Operational factors include mission readiness, survivability, and overall

performance. Mission readiness is the measure of the degree to which an
item is operable at the start of the randomly selected mission. Mission
readiness is measured by an item’s availability, reliability, and
maintainability. The major factors mentioned must be observed in balance
for aircraft measurement of safety. The environmental problems in
helicopter operations affecting aircrew are partly those which all soldiers
face, such as noise, heat and cold, and partly peculiar to the medium and the
vehicle in which aircrew train and fight, such as disorientation and
decompression.

Remarks:

The kind of helicopter that the group acknowledged to pursue was a military
medium lift helicopter which is designed for medium cost of operation. The
group settled for a medium lift type role of helicopter which can be used in
various set of operations to which the helicopter is not only limited to its
manufacturer country but to Asian countries as well where it is tasked to
operate.
The airframe of the proposed helicopter will situate from Agusta
Westland AW109’s airframe. The group chose the airframe of Agusta
Westland AW109 due to its favorable balances of reliability and
performance. The chosen airframe will strengthen the effectiveness of
helicopter in all its operations. For the efficiency of helicopter’s overall
performance, a twin engine design was chosen by the group. The main rotor
will use a rigid rotor system since it offers the best properties of both the
semi-rigid and fully articulated systems. The usage of tail rotor will
complement the helicopter’s ease of operation. Since heavy payloads are
mostly carried, the landing gears are opted as well as the undercarriage. For
Avionics, modern equipment are designed to provide a pilot with critical
flight information at a glance for greater situational awareness and safety.
For communication and navigation and purposes, it uses satellite tracking
system to transmit information every few minutes to ground-based
computers
