Lesson Plan Template rev 1/22/18

Date: 3/17/2019 Teacher’s Name: Jennah Jacobs

Subject: Pre-Calculus and Advance Topics Grade level: High School
Unit: Vectors and Matrices Length of lesson: 45 minutes

Central Focus: This lesson will be a review of the unit circle taught in Algebra 2 and
Trigonometry. Students will familiarize themselves with the different way to write the rotations
of an object.
Lesson Title:
For unit, 3__ out of _5_:

Essential Question(s): How does the unit circle vary depending on measurement?

Learning Standards: NYS content standards, professional standards (CEC, NCSS etc.)
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.TF.A.1 Understand radian measure of an angle as the length of the arc on the
unit circle subtended by the angle.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.TF.A.3 (+) Use special triangles to determine geometrically the values of sine,
cosine, tangent for π/3, π/4 and π/6, and use the unit circle to express the values of sine, cosine, and
tangent for x, π + x, and 2π - x in terms of their values for x, where x is any real number.
Literacy Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.11-12.4 Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-
specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades
11-12 texts and topics.

Pre-Assessment: Determines prerequisite skills and knowledge students have about the lesson

Learning Objectives Students will be able to: Assessments: Student created unit circle Formatted Table
Write the unit circle using radians, degrees,
cosine and sine.

Differentiation:
Students will be placed into groups based on their ability.

Academic Language:
Students will need to know the terms unit circle, radians, degrees, cosine, and sine.
Students will use syntax in drawing the unit circle and discourse in explaining it to their peers.
Procedure:

Anticipatory Set (hook, motivation, etc. to engage students)

a. Ask students what they know about the unit circle. Write their answers on the
white board. Next play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CiXAP8XaBg. Now
hand out the first sheet of the Unit Circle worksheet. (5 minutes)

Initial Phase

a. Now write on the board the words cosine and sine. Make a T chart with a line
between cosine and sine. Have students come to the board and write what they
know about each of these. Next play
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbx2OlAuQ-0. You may need to play it
twice and pause it occasionally so students can take notes. (10-15 minutes)

Middle Phase
a. Now split the students into 5 groups and hand each group a giant post it sheet
and a marker:
Group 1: This group will be a mixed group of students struggling to grasp the
material. They will draw the unit circle and draw the angles in degrees.
Group 2: This group will also be made up of students who are struggling with the
material. This group will draw the unit circle and draw the angles in radians.
*Both of these are on the worksheet handed out in the anticipatory set.
Group 3: This group will be made of intermediate students. This group will draw
the unit circle and write out the coordinates. These were shown in the video
during the initial phase. If students have access to their own technology, give
them the link so they can rewatch the video.
Group 4: This group will be a mix of students who have a clear grasp of the
material. This group will draw the unit circle and label the cosine of each angle.
Group 5: This group will be a mix of students who have a clear grasp of the
material. This group will draw the unit circle and label the sine of each angle.
Let students know that these will be hung up around the room.
(15-20 minutes)

b. Now have each group explain their unit circle. Make sure that they have labeled
everything correctly. (10 minutes)
Concluding Phase
a. Hand out the second page of the Unit Circle worksheet. Have students mark that
the coordinates are written as cos, sin. Ask students for any questions.

Follow up: Have students review the unit circle focusing on the coordinates because we will be
using them in the next class.

Materials: Whiteboard, whiteboard markers, 5+ Giant Post It sheets, computer, projector
