To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Karla Arana, and I am interested in beginning my career as a critical care

nurse. My attention to detail and unique experiences at the University of Arizona make me a
qualified candidate to fill this position. My Spanish minor has also allowed me to not only speak
the language fluently, but also learn how to write and read the language at a higher level, which
has strengthened my communication skills.
During the course of my undergraduate career at the University of Arizona, I have had
various experiences that have translated to my nursing practice. This past summer, I was able to
travel to Spain and shadow doctors in a teaching hospital as a fellow in the Atlantis project. This
was an especially formative experience since I was able to observe doctors, nurses, and patients
in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings over the course of the program. I was also able to
expand my medical vocabulary in Spanish, which has allowed me to deliver culturally competent
care to patients in Tucson. This experience exposed me to different cultures, languages, and
healthcare systems, which has given me the tools to better empathize with people and grow as a
leader. As an active member of the Tri Delta Sorority I have held two leadership positions.
During my time as Secretary I was given the task of working as a liaison between officers and
members of the sorority. This task allowed me to work with various types of personalities and
encouraged me to learn how to deliver information effectively. My second officer position was
Sponsor Chairman, whose task was to strengthen relationships between members by organizing
and advertising events. As a student I have also been given the opportunity to become a
preceptor for Chemistry 101b where I facilitated weekly reviews and exam review sessions. My
preceptorship challenged me to be creative and learn new skills in order to teach complicated
subjects to my peers. I also had to work on a team with other preceptors in order to complete
certain tasks, such as meeting deadlines for creating supplemental study materials. I also have
experience volunteering in my local hospital, San Ramon Regional Medical center, where I was
placed as a volunteer in Outpatient Physical Therapy. As a volunteer my tasks included clerical
tasks, such as filing medical records and restocking supplies. I was also given the opportunity to
use my fluency in Spanish in translating for patients as well as shadow different employees in the
department.
These previous experiences have challenged me to adapt to different environments and
learn new skills quickly in order to be successful both academically and grows as a leader. As a
well- rounded, goal-oriented, and hard-working student I believe I would be successful as a
critical care nurse. Thank you for the time to consider my resume, and I look forward to hearing
from you soon.

Sincerely,
Karla Arana
