ADVANCED PROGRAM IN ELECTRONIC
AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

1. PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT AND EDUCATIONAL

OBJECTIVE

The mission of the advanced undergraduate program of University of Danang is very

good in undergraduate educating. We shall be among the best in the quality of our
undergraduate program, preparing our graduates for successful careers in
engineering, postgraduate education, and life-long learning.

Our program has been carefully designed to provide our students with very good
classroom and laboratory instruction. Our educational mission shall be fulfilled by
meeting the following set of objectives. Our graduates will:

1. Be instructed by outstanding faculty, whose expertise covers a wide range of

specialties, and who actively participate in research and development;
2. Learn the fundamentals of electronic engineering through a broad set of
required core courses that apply science and mathematics to engineering and
require effective oral and written communications;
3. Apply engineering fundamentals to a selected specialty of ECE, culminating in
a significant design experience;
4. Apply a variety of modern software tools and laboratory equipment to
engineering design and analysis in an environment that emphasizes teamwork;
5. Explore the opportunity for significant extra-curricular undergraduate
experience, through participation in research projects, industrial co-op, EE
student organizations, and engineering service to the community in order to
better understand the societal impact of engineering activities;
6. Exhibit the creativity and innovation needed for life-long learning in the
rapidly changing field of ECE

2. STANDARD TRAINING DURATION

Standard training time is 5 years, in which, ECE students will learn only TOEFL iBT
in the first year. At the end of 1st year, students have to attend an TOEFL iBT
International Testing Examination in late June. Students who passing 500 TOEFL or
61 iBT TOEFL is able to continue the next 4-year curriculum. Students who failed in
the test is going to be considered for transferring to normal classes. There is around
50 students enrolled each year. Note: Open Oppurtunity: Non-ECE candidates with
TOEFL iBT greater than 61 scores (or equivalent IELTS) can apply for admission in
June. When enrolment better meets English requirement, UD will reduce training
duration to 4 years.

ADVANCED PROGRAM IN ELECTRONIC
AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

3. TOTAL OF CREDITS
180 credits (not included 1st year of learning TOEFL iBT)

4. ADMISSION
Based on Part B, Item V, Document No 300/BGD&ĐT-ĐH-SĐH on 01st Dec 2006
issued by the Ministry of Education and training (MOET) on guidelines about the
implementation of the Advanced Program, herewith are the University of Danang
admission requirements for this Advanced Program:
• be already admitted in regular undergraduate program in UD or from other
universities after passing the national entrance examination - field A
• meet the English level of 450 for TOEFL or 4.5 for IELTS. Students not
obtaining above scores will be admitted through required English test
• enter the Advanced Program on a voluntary basis through filling out enrollment
forms available on program web pages www.dut.udn.vn/ece /

5. TRAINING PROCESS, GRADUATION CONDITIONS

Students will learn an up-to-date undergraduate curriculum from the University of
Washington taught by UW professors, Overseas professors and local instructors. The
whole process is implemented to meet the ABET standards and with consultation by
ABET experts from UW, Seattle University and Carnegie Mellon University. Training
process is done using credit system, satisfactory progress includes taking at least 12
credits/quarter (unless a part-time petition is on file or the student has mitigating
circumstances), maintaining a 2.0 GPA, and passing EE courses with a grade of 1.0 or
above. Graduation requires that students complete total of 180 credits of the whole
advanced program and meet TOEFL level of 550 scores or equivalent IELTS 6.0.

8. Electrical Engineering Major Concentration Area

Advanced Program focuses in the four following major concentration areas, which
emphasize depth in addition to some adjacent breadth in Electrical Engineering. Each
of the areas culminates with a significant design project in a “capstone” course
[indicated by an * adjacent to the number of credits, e.g., EE 433 (*5 cr.)].
Comunications: This area emphasizes modern analysis for transporting information
from one place to another through wired or wireless communications, and from one
time to another, as in data storage. Example applications include cellular telephones
technology, broadcast TV and radio, satellite communications, optical fiber
communications, computer networking, and communications network security.

EE 417 (5 cr.)
EE 442 (5 cr.)
EE 420 (*5 cr.)
suggested electives: EE 480 (3 cr.), EE 472 (5 cr.), ... (suggested by UW)

Digital Signal Processing: In this area, we develop powerful methods to process both
continuous and discrete signals using mathematical techniques to perform
transformations and/or extract information. We deal with a variety of signal forms
such as music, video, speech, language, images, sonar, seismic vibrations, medical,
and biological. It is a vital technology with applications in many areas:
communications, information processing, consumer electronics, control systems, radar
and sonar, medical imaging, seismology, and scientific instrumentation. Examples of
signal processing tasks include removing noise from voice signals, automatic
recognition of human speech for voice activated devices, enabling satellite imaging
systems to resolve tiny objects on the ground, enhancing internal organs in CAT scans,
compressing music signals for portable music players (such as iPods), and
compressing video for DVD andvideoconferencing.

Embedded Computing Systems: This area emphasizes the design of digital circuits
at a somewhat higher level. The design of logic circuits is partially abstracted into
various logic families, with considerations of speed, power, and other performance
measures. Example applications include digital cameras, portable music players (such
as an iPod), electronics in automobiles, home appliances, etc.

VLSI Circuits: This area emphasizes the technology of designing digital

microelectronic circuits which could be implemented as a single integrated circuit with
millions of transistors. Example applications include computer memory, logic gates,
digital ASIC (application specific IC) and various programmable gate array systems:
