3- Antiblocking masterbatch. Offers improved optical properties over films containing natural
silica and will not interfere with migratory co-additives relative to films made with synthetic
silica.

5- Masterbatch based on polyolefin. Suitable for blown film applications.

Assignment # 04
Twin Screw Extruder for the compounding of Polymers
Polymers are blends with their compounding ingredients in extruder. The blending of basic components
such as antioxidant and light stabilizers is done either during the last stage of polymerization process or
soon after in an extrusion steps which is followed by granulation. Compounding extruder are classified
into twin and single screw extruder. The shear mixing of twin screw extruder is more efficient as
compared to single screw extruder. Bulk polymerization twin screw extruder are used in the
manufacturing of TPU, POM etc.

Classification of twin Screw Extruder:

Intermeshing and non- inter meshing twin screw extruder are the types of twin screw extruder.

1- Intermeshing twin screw extruder

(a) Co-Rotating twin screw extruder:

One screw wipes the other without creating high shear against the walls of the barrel. They are
designed as mass-transfer devices, with the ma i n a p p l i c at i on s b ei n g mi x i n g , devolatilization,
and reactive extrusion. High speed and shear input screw diameters range from 15-400 mm with
outputs of 240 g/hr to as much as 50,000 kg/hr. The barrels are modular. Screws are eke segmented
and assembled on high-torque spitted and hammered shafts. Screw speeds an available beyond 1200
rpm. A typical process length is 32:1 to 40:1 L/D, with lengths of up to 60:1 LID also possible.

(b) Counter Rotating Twin Screw Extruder:

The melt is squeezed out of the gap between the screw. They have two two types;

1- High speed and energy input, which are design as mass transfer devices with the main
application being mixing an reactive extrusion.
2- Low- speed late fusion: intermeshing with with either parallel or conical conical screws are
designed to avoid energy input and do not melt the material.

(c) Conical twin screw extruder:

Conical screws are shorter with larger diameter shafts than parallel. Because of the large surface
area of the screw in the feeding zone, heat transmission to the material is very uniform.

(d) Parallel Twin screw extruder:

They create high shear and high intensity mixing action. The design is rely on the mixing
and compounding of thermoplastics and elastomers.
