The Man Who Wasn’t My Father

By Sandra Nicole Roldan

When I saw the title of the story, I already thought “whose father is this selection
about” and “what did he do”. At first, the story confused me because of my lack of
knowledge about the background of the writer, why she wrote this selection. I found out that
this selection was for her father who was in the prison. Sandra Nicole wrote this fine written
work about the life of his father. While I’m reading and finally understood what the story is
about, my heart was touched by the love of his father to her daughter even if they are
apart. It made me think that a father will do anything to feel the love of his daughter. Even if
they suffer, they still continue to fight and feel the love of their beloved daughter. I also feel
like I am in the inside the prison because of how the father describe his surroundings. At the
end of the chapter, I was happy and relieved by the result of waiting in the prison for so long.
This piece of work gives me a mindset that no matter how hard the challenges and problems
a father faces, he will always endure the pain and suffering for the sake of his family, for
them to be happy and safe.

The man who wasn’t my father is a prose poem because it is in paragraph form that
has a poetic meter which is the rhythm of the poem. It also let us imagine the things that is
described like how the father described the prison. The selection also contains image-driven
metaphors which made me confused and use my critical thinking to fully understand what is
going on in the story. A prose poem is like a story where within words rhyme with each other
to create an amazing piece.

Thy story revolves between the father and daughter, and talks about the experiences
of the father. The selection talks about a father who waited in prison to feel again the love of
her daughter. This took place in a prison where a mirror is the only way for the father and
daughter to talk and see each other. In this time, the Martial Law emerge that is why for
some reason, the father is locked on bars. In the start of the story, the father describes where
he was in, which was in prison, and talks about what he feels towards his daughter. He
always describes and talks about her daughter, what she does, what she wears, who takes
care of her and how her skin feels. He never stopped thinking about her daughter and at the
end of the story; it is finally the time of tears and joy. He was finally released from the prison.
He was able to continue his life with her precious daughter.
